(5)

P. Morgan and the International Mercantile Marine Co. RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. She was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and she was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. On her maiden voyage, she carried 2,224 passengers and crew. Have a story to share? Drop us a message or email us at [email protected]

The violin belonging to Wallace Hartley, musical bandleader onboard the RMS Titanic - was first found and authenticated in 2005 through testing.

In 2013, the violin sold for $1.7 million at Henry Aldrige & Sons Auctioneers in Devizes, England, the third most ever paid for a Titanic artifact.

The owner who remains Anonymous entrusted Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge with the violin, which will be put on display from July 01 through December 2020.

RMS Titanic, Inc. (RMST) called witnesses before a federal judge last week to argue that cutting into the sunken ship's hull and taking the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Machine that transmitted the Titanic's last distress signals would not be "grave robbery."

RMST has exclusive rights to salvage lost items from the Titanic. In the past, it has saved silverware, gold coins and fine china from the wreckage.

In total, RMST has salvaged more than 5,000 artifacts from the ship, but the US Government wants to protect the best interests of the public and of the sunken ship before it allows any more items to be salvaged.

Thus, the RMST will have to obtain federal permission to carry out the expedition, which is slated to take place in August.

HELP NEEDED WITH SOUTHAMPTON'S #TITANIC CREW RESEARCH

For the last couple of years I have been helping Titanic researchers who have created a free online map (https://titanicmap.org/) that pinpoints with GPS every known Titanic related site in the world . Homes, graves and memorials can be found by using the map and I have been helping with crew homes and various graves and memorials in Southampton.
The British Titanic Society are restoring those graves no longer tended by the owners. Some have leases that have expired and the owners need to be traced for permission to restore the grave to be granted.
Southampton Old Common Cemetery has the plots recorded and blue wooden stakes next to every grave or memorial that can be seen from a distance.
But descendants still find it difficult to locate them as the cemetery is huge and mother nature often takes over.
Even when a grave is located the stonework is often in poor repair and the inscription unreadable.
So using the map a person can find an exact location quickly.

The task we have is to find out which graves are out of lease and no longer tended so that permission can be granted for the researchers to restore or replace broken headstones or memorials.
I have a list of unmarked graves in Hollybrook, South Stoneham, St Marys Extra and SOC.
If you are a relative of any of the Titanic crew listed please get in touch so that we can determine ownership of the plots.

Fr Browne received Titanic's maiden voyage ticket as a present from his uncle in April 1912, traveling from Southampton to Queenstown via Cherbourg. Settled in at A-37 on the promenade deck, he toured the ship and captured dozen of photographs of life on board.

Browne got off the Titanic when she docked in Queenstown and continued theological studies. When the news of Titanic sinking reached him, he realized his photos would be of great value to the media which he negotiated a sale to various newspapers and media.

The doors were designed and built by Harland and Wolff, a state of the art as it doesn't require manual labor which proves to be unreliable in the past than the electric. It can be activated locally, remotely and a triggered mechanism.

The doors are held in an open position by a clutch, and this clutch could be released by a control panel on the bridge. In the event of a clutch release, alarm bells would sound to warn crew members for evacuation to the above decks via steel ladders.

A float is fitted under the floor to automatically activate the closure of watertight doors if the water reaches a certain level.

The watertight door can be closed locally with a flick of the switch but opening the watertight door can only be done remotely which is the bridge.

In the early hours of Thursday, 4 April 1912, the Titanic- one of three olympic-class liners arrived at Southampton. Workers of the Harland & Wolff's Plant had to apply the finishing touches on the interior features before her maiden voyage departure on the 10th of April 1912.

Titanic was to open to the paying public as it's common to have the public visit a ship before the maiden voyage but the event had to be canceled for the application of finishing touches.

Instead, she was dressed up with flags and buntings in a salute to the people of Southampton on 4 April 1912.

RMS Olympic was the first of the three giant ocean liners by White Star Lines โ€“ the others were Titanic and Britannic.

White Swan Hotel is a 300-years-old English hotel located in the town of Alnwick, Northumberland, England.

An RMS Olympic Suite restaurant can be found in the White Swan Hotel, with original fittings from the ship that includes paneled walls, mirrors, decorated ceilings, staircases and a revolving door taken from the Olympic before her superstructure was dismantled at Jarrow, 1935

Hotel then-owner, Algenon Smart was a frequent passenger on the Olympic hence he took part in the Olympic's fittings auction ran by "Knight Frank & Rutley" in November 1935.

Smart successfully bid for the elements of the First Class Lounge, Aft First Class Staircase and Revolving Door from the ship's restaurant and incorporated the elements into the dining suite for the hotel or as we call it today, the Olympic Dining Suite.

A study to find her deterioration rate, an expedition was launched in 2004 by NOAA with a marine explorer - Robert Ballard. Modern items were found around the wreck site such as plastic cups and ballast bags were found around the site, originating from passing ships and submersibles visiting the wreck.

Deep-Submersible visiting the Titanic impacts the state of the wreck, often landing on the roof/deck of the Titanic already weakened structure causing noticeable impact upon landing.

Violet Jessop, a survivor of both Titanic & Britannic sinking

20 Sept 1911 - Jessop aboard RMS Olympic (sister of Titanic) collided with British warship HMS Hawke.
No fatalities, made it back to port without sinking.

14 April 1912 - Jessop aboard RMS Titanic was lowered onto Lifeboat 16 and rescued by RMS Carpathia later on.
Over 1496 fatalities, sank on 15 April 1912

21 November 1916 - Jessop aboard hospital-ship HMHS Britannic as the vessel struck a deep sea-mine in the Aegean Sea, sank within 55 minutes. Jessop was lowered onto the lifeboat and survived. 1066 on-board, 30 fatalities.

While Britannic was sinking, Jessop and other passengers were nearly killed by the boat's propellers that were sucking lifeboats under the stern. Jessop had to jump out of her lifeboat resulting in a traumatic head injury which she survived.

Our Story

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic resulted in the loss of 1,496 souls, one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The RMS Titanic was the largest man-made moving object at the time of her maide voyage. She was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by White Star Line and she was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. On her maiden voyage, she was carrying 2,208 souls onboard including both passengers and crew.

I'm currently reading a of course fictional ghost story. The location being the Titanic, but had a question. If there are any Titanic buffs out there that look on this site. In 1912 and 1975 when the book takes place it talks of it being impossible to bring the ship up. To be put into a museum or whatever as of now 2019 is it still impossible. I would assume it is even more impossible now cause the ship itself being to fragile to be brought up. Am I right or wrong in thinking this?
Anyone aware of where one could find recipes for meals prepared aboard the Titanic?
