It's National Volunteers Week, and we'd like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers on the North Norfolk Railway.

Volunteers are the mainstay of the NNR and without them we simply wouldn't be able to run. Our volunteers come from all over the UK, some every few months and some practically live on the Railway!

Whilst our volunteers are all currently at home and staying safe, we're grateful for all the hours of time they put into the Railway and enjoyment that they bring to our travelling public.

Have you got any photos of our volunteers in action? If so, we'd love to see them in the comments below!

⚠️ NNR Covid-19 Appeal - New way to donate ⚠️

The railway has expanded how you can support it during the coronavirus pandemic – monthly donations by standing order.

To sign up please email [email protected]

Making a donation each month, whatever the amount, will help strengthen the railway's financial planning by providing a steady income to supplement one-off donations already made to the appeal. It might be the cost of a round of teas or the price of a couple of day rovers tickets - whatever works for you.

All donations will boost the NNR’s Covid-19 Emergency Appeal, which so far has raised more than £60,000.

Thanks in advance, and stay safe.

22/05/2020

Press Release - North Norfolk Railway PLC.

North Norfolk Railway 40s Weekend – 19th/20th September 2020.

The North Norfolk Railway has staged the extremely popular 1940s event in mid-September for the past 25 years. During this time the event has grown in popularity with visitor numbers now reaching in the region of 40,000 over the weekend. Many of these come from all over the country to experience this highly-rated weekend event bringing welcome late season income to the towns of Sheringham and Holt.

This year coronavirus has caused unprecedented actions with so many major events having to be cancelled or postponed. Regrettably the North Norfolk Railway along with others in the sector has suffered considerably with social distancing causing unique difficulties to overcome.

Like all businesses the current restrictions have had an adverse impact on the Railway and its special events. As a result of this the North Norfolk Railway has had to make the very difficult decision to cancel this year’s 40s Weekend that was due to take place on the 19/20 September. The numbers normally attending the event make it impossible, at this time, to guarantee visitors’ safety in relation to social distancing. The Board of Directors have had to make this difficult decision taking into account HM Government guidelines and hope that all who have supported the event, over the years, will look forward to make the 2021 event even bigger and one to remember.

Managing Director, Hugh Harkett commented “ We are very sorry we have had to cancel this very popular event and realise that many of you will be disappointed with that. Although the event was planned for September which is a while away yet, it does take much planning which has to start now. Given the Government’s advice and the restrictions currently in place we had no option as the size of the crowds at the Forties would be unmanageable. We do hope to welcome you all back next year. In the meantime, provided there is some easing of guidelines, we hope to be running ordinary passenger trains in late summer. They will run to a special timetable and restricted access for the protection of our passengers, especially in terms of contact. Please keep your eye on our website for details”.

The North Norfolk Railway very much regrets having to make this decision but is convinced it is the right one in the current climate. We look forward to 2021 when we hope that we can return to a more normal operation.

We would like to thank you for your support at this difficult time.

Nominations are still open for our virtual tournament of favourite locos to visit the Railway. Remember to nominate your favourite on the original post (not this one!) for your vote to be counted.

To ensure we can continue to add to the list of iconic locos that visit us, please help us by supporting our COVID-19 Emergency Appeal. Details of how you can help in a variety of ways inclduing share purchase, donation and footplate rides are available at www.nnrailway.co.uk.

Whilst we remain closed during these difficult times and our engines stand dormant, we want to know what's been your favourite locomotive (steam or diesel) to visit the NNR?

To do this, over the next few weeks we're going to be running a virtual knockout tournament of your favourite visiting engines by poll to crown an overall favourite as voted for by you - the public!

To start the ball rolling we need some entries to our Round of 16. To nominate your favourite visitor (a loco not normally based on the NNR), list the loco you want to nominate in the comments below. If someone has already nominated your loco of choice, like their comment to add your vote (you can only vote for one loco, multiple votes will be discounted!). The 16 locos with the most votes by Wednesday 13th May at 17:00 will enter the tournament.

We took a drive along the Norfolk coast yesterday (our first time out in ages) and were greeted by your lovely BR Mogul steaming towards Weybourne. Not only was this the first train I photographed (from the passenger seat) in months, it turned out to be one of the best photos I have taken. Even managed a few poppies for good measure!
