Dana Finch’s wide travels in southern Europe, Scandinavia, India, Nepal and the US have informed much of her work. Wild and extreme landscapes of deserts and rugged mountains captivate her, particularly the robust forms of desert plants, but there is also an investigation of the garden and the poetic narratives of such cultivated and inhabited spaces. One of the most formative experiences of her life was visiting the Moorish gardens and palaces of Spain as a child. Now living in West Cornwall, a cooler but no less dramatic and wondrous environment, Finch paints in a studio in Trewidden Gardens near Newlyn.

London born Alice Corbett moved to Devon at an early age, growing up in a world of creativity, with arts and crafts very much in her family DNA.

Gaining a BA(Hons) in Interior Architecture at Kingston University, Alice’s interests lead her to explore the world of ceramics. Continuing her studies at Richmond College, her passion for clay and its applications developed into a practice centring ceramic sculpture: an exploration of both form and texture.

Over the last two years my work has evolved a way I had not foreseen. Elements of natural phenomena, specifically those linked to water, have constantly informed my works. Waves, wakes, tides and currents, whether gentle or turbulent, all leave their marks, however fleeting. There is always a line, an edge which is constantly changing. These are the lines and marks that I have been chasing. More recently, the subject of the drawings has moved from being purely a representation of these phenomena and natural events, to becoming images of moments and events of their own making.

Lisa Stokes’ practice draws upon lived experience by exploring the fundamental themes of mental health issues, loss, memory and the journey of motherhood; the physical and emotional experiences when something is destroyed, forgotten or hidden. The work acts as an emotional compass, weaving together past and present emotions and events, decoding, revealing and reimagining the uncanny beneath the surface of the everyday. Employing the aesthetic vehemence of expressionism, Stokes combines contrasting mediums such as oil paint, oil pastel, ink and charcoal, weaving them together to create rich visceral textured surfaces. Her work offers a poignant and resonant narrative that speaks to the heart of the human condition.

“Along with architecture and the human vices, it is also a great love of the animal kingdom which pervades my work, with tigers, fish, and giraffes featuring in rude abundance. But it is birds that stand as my foremost muses, intriguing me with their great plumages. I approve entirely that entire species have, on instinct alone, quite rightly put aside all virtues as irrelevant with the sole exception of beauty, taking on pointlessly fabulous appearances and bearing confused facial expressions. For me, this epitomises what I strive for in my own work: the creation of sumptuous objects of no practical value, serving no other function than to be gazed at and adored.”

Focused predominantly on portraiture of women, King’s oeuvre captures the essence of her subjects through poignant and unfiltered moments, drawn from candid conversations with those in her life

Although these two pieces aren’t technically portraits, human hands still tell the story of a life: their texture the labour they’ve known, the way the lines bunch and curl are imprints of things held, nails – manicured or left raw – give us an insight into the person they belong to. The patina of skin tells the story of a life.

King has exhibited widely across the UK and established a growing national profile. In 2025, she was shortlisted among the final 22 artists for the Women in Art Prize and awarded the Square Feet Gallery Exhibition Prize. She also appeared on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year (Series 12, 2025).
