***WAVERLEY WITHDRAWN FROM SERVICE***

It is with deep regret we must inform our loyal customers and supporters that Waverley has been withdrawn from service.

Waverley Excursions Ltd General Manager, Paul Semple has made the following statement.

“Today I have to announce that following extensive efforts to repair Waverley’s boilers we have reached the conclusion that we must stop repairs. We now know that to give Waverley a future she will need new boilers.

The challenge ahead is significant and unlike previous challenges the ship has faced in the last 45 years through her preservation. I am personally appealing to anyone that wants to see this historic ship sail again. I know first-hand the fondness that the general public have for Waverley and I know this news will be upsetting. However, Waverley can sail again if we can raise the funds required to purchase and install new boilers.

The Registered Charity which owns Waverley will shortly launch an appeal to save the ship and ensure she sails again. The cost of the required works is significant but if every passenger who would have sailed this year donated the cost of their ticket towards our appeal we will return Waverley to steam. More than ever we need support to preserve this iconic vessel as the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world.”

Donations can be made now via our website or by texting STEAM 20 to 70085 to donate £20.

Please share to help us save Waverley.

Two brothers, Colin and David Richardson, would like to mark the 75th D-Day anniversary this year by rowing a replica Cockleshell Heroes canoe from Portsmouth Harbour on the 5th June, arriving at Pegasus Bridge in Normandy for the D-Day service on 6th June. The 'Peggy Paddle' will be done in aid of the Parachute Regiment Association, from which Colin and David are now retired. They are keen for a safety vessel to escort them overnight on this special crossing (ideally a motorboat able to carry them and their kayak if required). If anybody would like to get involved, please let Ben at the Marina Office know.

IBTC Portsmouth are looking for an experienced shipwright to join our expanding team in the International Boatbuilding Training College Portsmouth, training students of all ages to the highest standards of craftsmanship in traditional boatbuilding.

You will be based in the Historic Dockyard, a centre of shipbuilding and boatbuilding for over 800 years, and be involved, along with the students and volunteers, in the restoration of many important historic vessels as well as in the construction of replica vessels.

A strong motivation to pass on your skills and the ability to inspire others through effective communication are vital. Previous teaching experience is not essential.

Good to see you today Connie Grocott. Here's what graduate student Connie had to say about her recent experience in Costa Rica:

"Sail cargo new build, Ceiba.
Ceiba is a 45metre cargo ship. I started helping out on this project in January 2019 for 3 months. It was perfect timing as my first week here was the week they got the keel up on her blocks. From felling the trees to milling the logs and sawing them up from there Ceiba will be made. its a fantastic experience, from the style of living , learning how big ship builds are done and learning how to build right from the raw material is brilliant, also helping out the locals."

Where we began with F8, a very broken little boat in need of a lot of love. Vessels like this that have served their country deserve every right to be brought back to original glory. This is where we come in! But she needs to go right back to bear frame to do this! Watch this space for the restoration story!! 😀

An amazing photo from a book I was given called "Launched" - documenting some of the many boats build on Prince Edward Island, Canada. In the 1860s, this relatively small island was building an average of 92 vessels per year! This is the Schooner Empress, built in 1901 by George Wightman of Montague, Prince Edward Island. She was 118' x 30.8' x 12.6'. A vessel is being built in the foreground, and if you zoom in you can see another being built in the background just to the left of the Empress.

Been busy in the boatshed. A few weeks ago I made a new keel for Lilian as her’s was in bad shape. This was done using a big old bit of oak, a couple of nice scarfs plus a glue job using resorcinol (simplified a lot !!!) Chris and I then cleaned up the deadwood, apron and a few floors before transferring the rabbet line from the old keel to the new. An interesting rabbet/garboard meant a lot of head scratching while we tried to get into the head of a West Country boat builder. NOT EASY... Chris suggested drinking lots of cider at one stage. We then faired it into the existing rabbet and chop chop ..... I’d love to meet her builder and ask him how he did it 🙄 .... really nice and challenging job. all done.
