Some works do not shout.
They wait with you.
Opening on Wednesday 3 June, Mat Collishaw’s Last Meal on Death Row brings a quieter, more unsettling register to Of Myths and Murals.
Known for works that pair seductive beauty with darker moral and psychological questions, Collishaw turns here to the final meals requested by condemned prisoners in the United States.
In these works, ordinary food becomes charged with ritual, mortality and meaning. A plate, a drink, a final choice. Familiar things, held in a very different light.
Presented in the First Floor Georgian Galleries, the exhibition offers a powerful contemporary counterpoint to the movement, humour and theatricality elsewhere in the season. It asks us to pause, and to consider the strange closeness of comfort and dread, beauty and unease, the everyday and the profound.
