Opera at The Whitaker this Thursday 18th January.

The Royal Opera’s much-loved production of Verdi’s La traviata from 2019. One of the greatest of all operas, La traviata is based on the novel and play La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, inspired in turn by the life and death of the real Parisian courtesan, Marie Duplessis.

The opera tells the profoundly moving story of a courtesan prepared to sacrifice everything for love, and contains some of Verdi’s most beautiful arias and duets.

Support our Just Giving fundraiser!

Since our grand re-opening in 2021 we are proud to have welcomed more than 80,000 people through our doors.

Together, we dreamt, we designed, we celebrated special occasions, we explored new art together, and we inspired young minds through our exhibitions, collections, film nights, family activities, workshops, talks, community festivals and more!

Now we need your help! We want to engage with more community groups, support more local artists, restore our collections, and keep The Whitaker free to enter.
But to do that, we need your help. As everyone knows, costs have increased and that does not exclude us. That is why we are asking for your help to ensure the museum stays a jewel in Rossendale’s crown for generations to come.

Join us today! There will be some extra special animal guests around the museum – see if you can spot the frog, the otter, the turtle and the swamp reaper around our building!

As part of Ruby Tingle's Afterlife exhibition, a series of performances will take place, where anthropomorphic characters roam the galleries. Life size amphibians and reptiles reveal themselves to help activate and animate the museum's collections; responding to the show's immersive colours, textures, sounds and scents and the Whitaker's building and surrounding spaces, combined with dance and movement inspired by herpetological creatures.

The performances will be taking place every Saturday until Saturday 9th March!

🎥 Opera at The Whitaker 🎥

One of the greatest of all operas, La traviata is based on the novel and play La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, inspired in turn by the life and death of the real Parisian courtesan, Marie Duplessis.

The opera tells the profoundly moving story of a courtesan prepared to sacrifice everything for love, and contains some of Verdi’s most beautiful arias and duets. Richard Eyre’s engrossing naturalistic production features stunning designs by his regular collaborator Bob Crowley. Italian conductor Antonello Manacorda conducts Verdi’s sublime score, which offers a wonderful showcase for the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus.

"The Frog embraces the realms between real life and fantasy, the blurring of boundaries between the real and imagined... the uses of prosopopoeia,
the rhetorical device in which a performer, speaker or writer
communicates by performing and singing as another person, or an animal, or an inanimate object" Simon Woolham (speaking about 'The Frog' as part of his practice)

The performances will be taking place every Saturday until Saturday 9th March!
