Book Apothecary

Book Apothecary Book Apothecary is a travelling museum of artist's books with North East roots, a national track record and ambitions to travel further afield.
Book Apothecary is a travelling museum of artist’s books with North East roots, a national track record and ambitions to travel even further afield. Initially set up by visual artist Yvette Hawkins in 2011 to create partnerships between experienced visual artists and young people in order to produce innovative work exploring ideas of what the book could be, Book Apothecary now operates as a collective of four artists. The philosophy of open participation and community engagement is still very much at the core of the Book Apothecary philosophy as is the desire to build upon its diverse collection of book works. This collection is made up of handmade books, sound installations and curious objects and merges both old and new technologies including printmaking, sculpture and digital media. Presented inside a series of reclaimed and modified vintage suitcases and trunks, the collection continues to grow through residencies and workshops in settings accessible to the general public including libraries. Book Apothecary is actively looking for further opportunities to create new work and to give the public hands-on access to the collection.

A little distraction for you on this #noclaritymonday.

Let’s get lost in this stitched fabric book of dreams. 😍

This unique booklet of embroidery and drawnwork, was created in Portugal in the early 17th century. Size 8 inches x 6 inches.

The techniques include cross stitch, reticello, drawnwork, satin stitch, knots and bullion stitch.

At some point fairly early in its history, the many small pieces of fabric included in this booklet were seamed together and loosely bound, to create a kind of glossary of colored and monochrome openwork patterns. Scraps of silk, glove leather and writing paper with Portuguese text were employed to stabilize the pages. The recycling of materials and the compact nature of the booklet all suggest that this was a purely practical reference work for a professional seamstress, and was not meant for display. Some of the patterns are worked in double running stitch, also referred to as "Spanish stitch," reflecting its possible origin on the Iberian peninsula in the sixteenth century.

Made from linen, silk, leather and paper.

We are slowly getting all our bookbinding courses online.

Our Coptic course was going to run this Sunday but for reasons I’m sure you’re all already too aware of, we aren’t doing face to face workshops.

This will be the first online course we launch.

There might be a delay in our launch as our courses all come with a materials kit. We buy our supplies from independent bookbinding suppliers - who have been hit the hardest- so our kits are taking a little longer to put together than usual.

Please continue to support us by buying a course. You will have access to an online course, a materials kit sent to you in the post and an invitation to join our private artist book Facebook group.

Book at the link below and share with your friends.

This workshop is now only available online.

Create your own sketchbook or journal using this method of bookbinding. Exposed Coptic stitch allows your book to open flat which is perfect if you're a writer or visual artist on the run.

We will create two versions of this hard backed book using materials from the bindery, incorporating hand stitching using waxed linen thread.

You will be sent a materials kit which includes everything you need to make two books. Don't forget to send us your address so we can send you the kit.

Book at the ticket link.

Louise Bourgeois is the queen of fabric books. The end.

Louise Bourgeois is the queen of fabric books. The end.

Louise Bourgeois. Untitled, no. 22 of 34, from the fabric illustrated book, Ode à l’oubli. 2002. Fabric collage, page: 11 3/4 x 13” (29.8 x 33 cm). © 2013 Louise Bourgeois Trust
Imagine the busy hands and loud machinery on a factory floor producing yellow and white checkered shirts. Imagine a shipment of those shirts arriving by truck at a department store. Imagine a woman in New York City, perhaps in the 1950s or 1960s, pulling one of these shirts off its rack and paying for it in cash and coins. Imagine all the scenes of daily life this shirt becomes infused with in the eyes of its wearer each time it’s pulled out of the closet. Now, imagine a stranger’s hands—my hands—running over this fabric that is nearly unrecognizable as a shirt many years later on a quiet afternoon in MoMA’s Department of Prints and Illustrated Books.
As I catalogued Louise Bourgeois’s Ode à l’oubli, carefully examining and recording data about the book, I felt subtly challenged to invent stories like this. On page 18, the book even seems to admit to evoking these imagined histories: “I had a flashback of something that never existed.”

Some images of naturally dyed book blocks which were then cased in with mulberry paper covers.

I make the book blocks first using Coptic stitch and then they get dyed in various dyes. Here is rust, tea and indigo. Often they stay in the dye bundles for several weeks before I rinse them and let them dry over a few days. I love how the paper ripples creating their own sculptural qualities.
