What happens when former Cold War adversaries find themselves working side by side in the cockpit?

Imagine one pilot with 35 years of experience witnessing the rapid evolution of helicopter technology, alongside another making the leap from a well-worn 1960s aircraft to one of the most advanced helicopters of the 21st century.

Join former Army Air Corps pilot Tam Macklin, as he shares his remarkable experiences of living and working in a former Soviet state, and the modernisation programme that brought two very different aviation cultures together in the cockpit of an AW139.

As it is World Space Week, we thought we would share an excerpt from a report by Major Timothy Mace, Army Air Corps . Major Mace was part of an international team trained by the Soviets as Cosmonauts in the 1990s and was the reserve for fellow Briton Helen Sharman.

The following entry regards a typical start to a day’s training - 0650: Oh no, not again! Time to get up for a run – an altogether dreadful part of the day. Having accidentally trodden on the cat on the way out, I meet up with the remainder of the international group: Helen Sharman, Ryoko Kikuchi and Toyohiro Akiyama from Japan and Franz Vieboch and Clemence Lothaller from Austria. There is also Ivan Ivanovich – a Colonel in the Soviet Airforce; he is our trainer.

The Museum was saddened to hear of the passing of Brigadier (Retd) Andy Cash following a period of illness.

A distinguished Army Air Corps officer, Andy served as Colonel Army Air Corps and later as Deputy Commander of Joint Helicopter Command and Head of Profession of the Army Air Corps. He made a lasting contribution to the Corps and to all those he served alongside.

Andy also served on the Museum’s Board of Trustees, supporting our work to preserve the history and legacy of British Army aviation. We remain extremely grateful for the contribution he made to the Museum.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and former colleagues at this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.

Second Lieutenant Davies REME took this fantastic photo whilst serving with 656 Squadron Army Air Corps in Malaya, in the late 1950s. It shows a lineup of five Auster aircraft, including WZ663 and WZ675, on the landing field at Kampong Kijal.

The physical photo that this image comes from was scanned in the Museum Archive earlier this year and is part of a digital only collection, kindly donated to us by Mr Davies.

To celebrate National Cadet Week, we’re featuring two fantastic Cadet groups who recently performed here at the Museum.

Gordon's School Pipes and Drums Band and Tonbridge School lRifle Drill Display Team, both part of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), gave fantastic displays at the South East Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Awards 2026 last month.

National Cadet Week (5–11 October), celebrates cadets across the UK and the confidence, leadership skills and sense of belonging the Cadet Forces help young people develop.

We love welcoming Cadet groups to the Museum for educational visits. We’re also hugely grateful for the invaluable support we receive from Cadet groups, from volunteering around the Museum to helping at our major fundraising event, Wallop Wheels & Wings. Their hard work, enthusiasm and professional approach are truly commendable, and we’re proud to support and celebrate the next generation of cadets .🫡

Well done also to all the dedicated adult volunteers who give their time to support and inspire Cadets 👏👏👏

It had to be an Apache this week!

Wednesday marked 51 years since the first flight of the Hughes YAH-64 prototype. The helicopter went on to win the US Army’s Advanced Attack Helicopter competition and enter production as the AH-64 Apache 🚁

To mark the anniversary, here’s an Army Air Corps AH-64E Apache photographed at Middle Wallop 🤩
