Methil Heritage Centre

Methil Heritage Centre Methil Heritage Centre is a small local history museum and archive. We also have a small tea room and a book shop Free Entry Methil Heritage Centre is a local history and exhibition venue situated in lower Methil, central Fife.

Originally called Lower Methil Heritage Centre it was created by Lower Methil Community Association. The centre was initially only open for a 6month period beginning on the 29th March 1991, and was situated in the old 1936 Post Office building which had been given to the Association on a 6month lease. The funding for the centre came from an EU initiative called the Urban Programme. The first exhibition was put on using objects loaned from Kirkcaldy Museum and donations from the local community. After its initial success it was decided that the centre would remain open permanently, run by a trust made up of local people. Unfortunately in 1996 the Urban Programme which funded the centre was shut down. It was at this stage that Fife Council took over the funding and management of the centre. Methil Heritage Centre is now run by Fife Cultural Trust. There is currently one paid member of staff onsite as well as volunteers from the Friends of Methil Heritage. Our aim is to make the history of Levenmouth accessible to everyone. As well as exhibitions twice a year the centre also has a dedicated archive team from the Friends of Methil Heritage who collect and manage an extensive archive of material from the local area. The Friends also do outreach work around the community.

There is never a dull day at Methil Heritage Centre, today I had a surprise visitor in the form of an old teacher I had in high school who popped in to see our Schooldays Exhibition: A trip down memory lane. It certainly was a trip down memory lane for me.
There is still time to pop along this afternoon and enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee, while seeing what we have on offer.

Robbie Williams was in the heritage centre today

granted he was the fire inspector but still ;)

We always appreciate feedback from our visitors, even if it is to tell us we need more dinosaurs :)

Its raining here in Methil today. Pop in to the heritage centre and escape the cold and rain with a nice cup of tea or coffee.

Looking for something to do today with the kids? Pop along to Methil Heritage Centre for some arty fun.

On today between 2-4pm
All ages welcome

Chatting with local historian Frank Rankin about the Norse history of Buckhaven and Methil.
Frank has written many interesting works on the history of the area which are available to buy at Methil Heritage Centre.
If you are along on a weekday you might even get to meet the man himself

Busy busy day at MHC today. Feel like I haven't sat down for a minute.
Lovely to see people enjoying the exhibition. Still plenty time to pop in and see us

Lovely visit today from Henry McLeish, former First Minister of Scotland.
Mr McLeish opened the centre in 1995 so it was great to see him again and show him how far we've come.

Working on some mining maps in our archive today. Why not come in and have a look

Raining and miserable? Why not come along to MHC and have a look through our archives
