Opportunity for Schools!

Saturday 16 March 2024 – Saturday 13 April 2024

The Dodo had survived for millions of years, but became extinct in just 70 years of contact with humans.

We definitely caused the dodo’s extinction, but not by eating them. Find out about the surprising story of how humans drove changes to the pristine island of Mauritius and caused the extinction of an entire species.

Plan a self-led visit for your class to explore the exhibition and take part in some of our self-led activities looking at where the Dodo lived, what their life was like and extinction. For further information, or to make a booking, please contact Rachael on [email protected] or phone 01623 463088.

We have exciting building work starting in Mansfield Museum. Building both a brand new permanent exhibition and a fully accessible toilet.

Over the next few months, Mansfield Museum is undergoing several exciting changes. Building work has started this week to install a brand new permanent exhibition and also a fully accessible toilet.

The toilet facilities will provide a dignified and hygienic option for people who need and deserve it. They feature a height-adjustable adult changing bench, a ceiling track hoist, a peninsular toilet with space for two assistants, a privacy screen along with practical items such as wide paper rolls, a large waste disposal bin, a backrest on the toilet seat and a height-adjustable wash basin.

Mansfield District Council is currently in the process of creating two Changing Places – in Mansfield Museum and at the Four Seasons Shopping Centre – after being awarded £183,200 by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

The building work in the museum may create some noise and limited access to some rooms, but we still have lots to see and do. Please come and visit us, and for information on what's on head to our exhibitions page on the website.

WRITE TRACK: Find Your Voice

Is there a story you’ve always wanted to tell, but you don’t know where to begin? Are you aged 18 or over?

From fiction to memoir, books, poetry, stage, or screen, getting started can often be the hardest part. In this brand-new writing group from Mansfield Palace Theatre, Associate Artist Anna Mansell will help you identify the story you want to tell, offer up some exercises to get you started, share tips on character, theme, structure, voice and that magic ingredient: ‘Show Don’t Tell’.

Each session will include writing exercises, peer group support, opportunity for 1:1 support and guidance from Anna, and that all important focussed time to allow you to get your thoughts down.

This is a fortnightly, 2 hr workshop session designed to help you focus on your writing and look at what your goals and objectives may be. What are the stories you want to tell and how might you go about telling them? The aim is that you leave each session with words on a page, some clarity, confidence, and the belief that your story is worth telling!

No experience needed, just an open mind, some pen and paper (or whatever you want to write on), and a willingness to get started.

Opening class: Thursday 18 January 2024
Next classes Thursdays (1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month)
Suggested donation: £3
Time: 6.30-8.30pm

Our under 5s stay and play sessions are taking a break. Due to some exciting changes being made to our building we shall be a bit short on space. But don't worry we will be back later on in 2024 with an exciting new programme

21/12/2023

As the end of 2023 approaches, we have been looking back at an amazing year of arts projects. This year Zest Theatre worked with Mansfield District Council Cultural Services on a series of projects that celebrate and amplify the voices of young people out into the public in our community.

Adam Pownall from Zest Theatre found himself back in his hometown of Mansfield, working with young people from the estate he was born on.

These projects reached over 87,000 people and have inspired the development of a youth voice strategy for Mansfield District Council.

Both Zest Theatre and Mansfield District Council are new Arts Council England, National Portfolio Organisations and we can’t wait to share an exciting programme of events and opportunities with you for 2024.
In this film, Adam explains more about the projects and his involvement.

We are so excited about our new community project working with Spectrum WASP and Sophie from SOJO Animation. "Mansfield as we see it" will be a short animation that explores how young people access and experience Mansfield from an autistic perspective. We are halfway through the project, and some of the creativity on show has already been amazing.

The young people have been hard at work exploring ideas for the film using a wide range of media and we thought we would share some of the fun. The project is funded through the Arts Council and develops our digital art programme working with Mansfield communities.

Installing some new data loggers in the stores today. These will record the temperature and humidity, and let us keep an eye on the conditions we store our objects in. Also they're tiny and super cute! 😃

Executive Mayor Andy Abrahams tells us more about the latest art exhibition at Mansfield Museum.

The exhibition showcases work created by internationally acclaimed disabled artist Jason Wilsher-Mills.

Jason & his Argonauts has involved the artist working with disabled communities around the UK to design new works that explore themes of disability.

It runs until March and features sculptures, giant inflatables, lightbox digital paintings and even ornate wallpaper. Visitors can download a free augmented reality app on to their mobile phones so they can fully interact with the exhibition.
