‘Write-Wing Politics’ is a documentary on how the state and activists used the 1980s media to their advantage on the issue of Section 28 of the Local Government Act. This is due for completion of filming early February 2018, close to the 30 year anniversary of this event. The section claimed it was illegal to 'promote' homosexuality in schools, and although no one was ever convicted under this Sec

tion, it had immediate impact on the social climate and encouraged hostility towards the LGBT community. The mainstream press used the threat of AIDS to suggest LGBT rights was a danger to society, and encouraged a return to Conservative morals Thatcher supported against the 'Loony Left'. At the same time, LGBT activists used the media to counter this, such as the 'invasion' of the BBC Six O'Clock News and the House of Lords. I'm currently looking for anyone who would like to be interviewed who was either involved with or affected by this legislation, along with anyone who has any photographs or footage from the time. The aim for this documentary is for it to be shown at documentary festivals in the UK such as Telling Tales festival, and CampusDoc festival aboard, making this an exciting opportunity to get involved in.
