Exciting times at Hat Works - just look at this blank canvas on the Gallery Floor!

It's been a while since we shared an update of the work behind the scenes on our Gallery Floor.

Here's what it looked like just before the contractors finished the building work. There used to be a wall here!

We now have new LED lighting, flooring, and the walls are a bright, clean canvas for us to work our magic on... big things are coming and we can't wait to transform Hat Works.

This part of the museum is still closed while we beaver away - but if you're hankering after a visit, our Factory Floor is open on certain dates for Guided Tours - check them out here: https://orlo.uk/GUIDEDTOURS_sh5ka

We're so excited to be part of the Great Frog-tastic Invention Trail! 🐸 Meet Gizmo – he’s rocking the look, you'll find him at number 12 on the trail map. Gizmo is named after the Gizmotron, a device invented in Stockport by 70’s band 10CC. Known for its unique sound effects, it was used prominently in classic hits such as ‘I’m Not in Love’. 🎵

You can see the Gizmotron for FREE at Stockport Museum, along with froglet Gizmo who is admiring the sun in our window. Coming soon, Stockport Museum will also be having a frog-themed trail for younger visitors. 🐸

Gizmo is designed by David Haworth, Stockport Museums.

I look forward to being at the gallery to answer any questions about the artwork in both of these exhibitions at the Preview on Saturday 27 November from 2 to 5 pm. Hope to see you there!
NEW POST! 🥰 Continuing with my recent theme of UK-based ideas of what to get up to locally this year, here are my tips for things to do in Stockport. Good old Stockport is local to me and it's where I do a lot of my eating, drinking and shopping, so I know it pretty well.

If you’ve not heard of it before, Stockport is a historic market town just south of Manchester, England. In the 18th/19th centuries, it was a big deal in the region’s textile production and grew to be the capital of the UK’s hat-making industry. There’s even a hat museum there! 🎩🧢👒

Today, Stockport is often overshadowed by the popular city of Manchester being so close to it. But Stockport has seen a lot of regeneration lately. Every time I go in, there’s something new and interesting popping up. And it actually has some brilliant stuff going on, from excellent craft beer bars 🍻 to gorgeous and unusual shops as well as a brilliant market 🛍️ and a great foodie scene.🍕 Unfortunately, it also has a fairly run-down shopping area and a generic chain restaurant/cinema complex, so this can give a negative first impression. You have to dig a little further (or get some tips from a local blogger…😉) to find all the lovely hidden gems around the old town and historic market area. If you know where to go, you’ll see a much nicer and different side to it.

Anyway, if you fancy a visit, I've listed some of my favourite things to do, see, and (of course) eat and drink there. Please give it a share if you enjoy the post! And as ever, I'm tagging anything mentioned below.
We can't wait for Bramall Hall to reopen!!

Really exciting news!! The phased reopening of Bramall Hall will soon commence 🙌

I have a silver commemorative trowel dated 1887 for the laying of a foundation stone for the new Wesleyan school at Reddish Green (see photos) and wonder whether your museum would be interested in it. I have tried contacting the Methodist chapel there but didn't get a response. I have also tried to trace relatives of the person who received it (Henry Coupe) but no success there either.
On Saturday 22nd February author Liam Newton will be discussing and taking questions about 10cc: The Worst Band In The World at Stockport Museums and Galleries. He'll sign books (which will be on sale at the venue), too. You could add it to your other 10cc memorabilia— whose is this single sleeve signed by Graham Gouldman… ?
Bramall Hall looking spectacular at . Treat friends and family to a gift they can enjoy throughout the year with an Annual Pass-unlimited visits for a full year to ALL Stockport Museums and Galleries sites! https://museumshops.uk/product/stockport-museums-adult-annual-pass-2/ Photography by Howard Green.
Coming out next month Confessions of a Steam Age Ferroequinologist contains detailed travels on the Manchester and Stockport railways in the mid-sixties. Containing 272 pages and 200 + photographs/ephemera full details are available on both The History Press and Amazon websites. Perhaps would would like to stock it?
Thanks.
