Longcase clock
Every week we wind Staircase House's gorgeous longcase clock, dating from the 1700s.
It was made by David Collier, born in 1721 in Heaton Norris, #Stockport.
Its ringing still sounds beautiful and can be heard throughout the house. Visit us today to hear it in person.

Now stocking - The Stockport Collection by Heidi Alexander
We're thrilled to be stocking Heidi Alexander's book 'The Stockport Collection' at our Museum Shop in the One Stockport Hub, Merseyway shopping centre.
The book is a beautifully nostalgic glimpse into the community and buzz of Stockport Market in the 1970s.
"In April 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, I discovered (quite by chance) some 35mm film negatives from weekend visits to Stockport Market in Greater Manchester, in 1976 and 1977. I had shot several rolls of film with the old Leica M4 camera passed on to me by my father. At that time I was an undergraduate student at Stirling University. Soon after that my life became all about parenthood and a full-time career in social work. So the negatives from my 1970βs adventures went into storage, occasionally dragged around house moves in Scotland, but mainly forgotten for over four decades.
Once they were scanned, I was able to see the Stockport images properly for the first time. They quickly brought back happy memories of the wonderful atmosphere I experienced wandering around the market with my camera: the sights, colours and noisy busyness and business which characterise a thriving market community.
While processing these 44-year-old images, I was struck how much they illustrated life before the internet, before Brexit and Covid-19 and Zoom meetings. It was a time when a living, breathing community, with predictable customs based on necessary interdependence, provided that sense of belonging which seems so elusive now in our current online, screen-dependent lifestyles." Heidi Alexander.
Stockport Museums have some of the market objects that can be seen in Heidi's photographs, which makes it a perfect addition to the Museum Shop's stock. The Stockport Collection (hardback, 116 pages) is the perfect coffee table book and makes for a great gift. Available NOW in the Museum Shop at One Stockport Hub for Β£20.
