I suspect this is a colony of young Purple Jellydisc feasting on some birch logs we've left to rot on the path that leads down from the south of St Mary's tower. Time will tell as I think they will open up and be more like little cups or bowls.

Some lovely clean drives on Prestwich Park, shame that people have to walk (or wheel, depending on their mobility) in the road to see them. This resident has blocked the pavement rather than the gutter, or keep it for the bin, or have a corner in the garden for compost. The irony of it being brown bin day isn't lost on me. They could have filled it at the weekend and filled it again after today, that's what I've had to do.

What Lies Beneath Prestwich Part 3 - Mixing water with sand.
The Heaton Park reservoir was constructed in 1928 and originally connected to the Thirlmere Aqueduct, via Agecroft, and was later connected to the Haweswater Aqueduct, via Unsworth. Its construction was impacted by the last Ice Age, with a "dint" on its northern edge to avoid glacial deposits.

What Lies Beneath Prestwich Part 4 ... coming soon...
Here's a sneak peek at the historical bore holes around Prestwich...
More recently, local historian J.F. Wilson wrote:
"In 1952 the National Coal Board began to make trial borings in Prestwich for coal seams. Italian workmen spent some months in boring for specimens of the strata in Heaton Park and on the ground of the Cricket Club at The Heys among other places."

What Lies Beneath Prestwich Part 3...Mixing Water with Sand
Well.. we don't really know how much water is under us as EA funding cuts mean inspections of licensed extractors (UU & golf, farm businesses etc) in the last 5 years has dropped by 66% from 139 to just 47 in the last year.
Here's a map of the old wells around Prestwich, and the old waterways that have now been culverted or dried up.

in 1944, Simmond Goldblum of 25 Kings Rd Sedgley Park, Prestwich was killed in action near Nederweert in The Netherlands.
Simmond served as a Private with the 6th Bn.King's Own Scottish Borderers. Following Operation Market Garden, Nederweert lay in the operating area of the British 8th Corps. Nederweert was liberated on September 22, by scouts from the 3rd British Infantry Division. German units withdrew and set up a new front along the Wessem-Nederweert canal, counter attacking on the 28th October, with the Scots counter attacking on the 30th. The front stabilized and Nederweert became the new front line.
The Allies finally crossed the Wessem-Nederweert Canal a month later.
Simmond is buried at Nederweert.

In 1896 a storm broke the dam that was holding back the Di**le, to form a pond at the Victorian Rectory of Prestwich. The dam was never repaired, the area was later used as a rifle range and has since been filled in to give us what we call St Mary's Playing Fields. Read more at prestwich.org.uk/beneath3

What Lies Beneath Prestwich - Part 3 Mixing Sand with Water.
Before heavy machinery was used, people extracted resources from the ground where they were found on the surface. Here's a map of the old surface pits around Prestwich, used for gathering sand, clay and gravel. Also shown are some related place names.
Blondie...
Well, I'm flummoxed and befuddled (again), she used "Pocket Computer" in the lyrics of 'Picture This' in 1978.
It wasn't even a thing until 1980. The lady just impresses me more, and she already impressed me a lot. Time Travel Blondie - now that's a movie I'd watch, tbh I'd watch a movie called Blondie, just not the one from the 1930's.
in 1849 John Brooks died at his home, Clarendon House, Cheetham Hill.
He was a son of William Brooks, supplier of raw cotton and twist to spinners in the local district.
The cotton firm of Cunliffe, Brooks and Co. succeeded but the partners realised that with the boom in the manufacture and sale of cotton goods, there was also a need for banking services such as loans and credit.
John was politically active, a Liberal candidate at one stage, and one of the earliest and most zealous members of the Council of the Anti-Corn-Law League, donating financially and travelling the length and breadth of the country lecturing and advising on its aims.
After being defrauded of £70,000 (£8m today) Mr. Brooks went to his warehouse distressed and humiliated. He told his manager that he had decided to never lend money again, he would stop his donations to charities and spend nothing. While he was yet speaking, a woman with some ragged children were observed in the passage. Apparently unconscious of what he had just said, he ordered a shilling to be given to the woman. The clerk reminded him of his resolution. " Well, well," he said, " but don't begin with this woman and her children."

I was lucky to go along with @Apollo PSD and catch New Dawn Fades in Derby Hall last night - thanks for the heads up Mary Burns . Derby Hall was the scene of the JD Riot 1980 of which Tony Wilson said "They certainly don’t know how to enjoy themselves up here in Bury”. Sadly Ian Curtis was already in a bad place and the following month he took his own life. If you need help call Samaritans on 116 123 or Text SHOUT to 85258. If you want to know what happened next for the remaining JD's, their first ever recording with a new lead singer was put on tape in Prestwich... check out prestwich.org.uk/neworder New Dawn Fades is on tonight & Sat at RNCM : https://www.rncm.ac.uk/performance/new-dawn-fades-1/ #joydivision #neworder #factoryrecords #prestwich #SuicideAwareness

What lies beneath Prestwich? During construction of the original OLOG church on Fairfax Rd in 1890-91, a layer of quick-sand was encountered and foundations had to be pulled down and rebuilt on solid ground once the sand had been removed. A man was also employed 24/7 to pump water off the site causing the northern foundations to take 10 weeks to construct. Read more about OLOG at prestwich.org.uk/olog Read more about the glacial and fluvial deposits that give us such troubles at prestwich.org.uk/beneath more links at prestwich.org.uk/links
What Lies Beneath Prestwich? Here's the spring feeding the two ponds constructed by volunteers at St Mary's flower park in Prestwich. Iron bacteria are of no threat to human health. They are found naturally in soils and water in low numbers and will thrive as more iron becomes available. With bedrocks of Triassic sandstone, mudstsone and ironstone, covered by fluvial and glacial sands and gravel, the water that springs up in Prestwich is rich in iron, quickly turns orange and rusts. The oily sheen created by the decomposing bacteria cells are often mistaken for petroleum sheens. However if the sheen cracks it is bacterial, petroleum sheens don't crack.

The Rainsough Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in 1874 under the supervision of the Minister of Prestwich Methodist Chapel. A schoolroom was provided in the undercroft of the chapel alongside stone steps dropping dramatically down to Rainsough Brow - Ian Pringle. Despite being granted permission for demolition on 2014, and replacement by 4 terraced houses, the chapel survived. Current permission is for convertion to a residence below the chapel, to be used for an autocephalic church. To the left you may just make out the wooden coolers of Agecroft Power Station A, used before the concrete cooling towers were constructed for stations B & C. prestwich.org.uk/places

Himalyan Balsam Pod's explode and fire their seeds upto 20 feet. it's not too late to pull the plants, but ripe pods will be popping if you disturb them. They weill pop with or without your intervention so you might as well attend your local patch and keep pulling.
Did I miss a 🙂90's🙂styleee rave or has someone been mapping the utilities around the Longfield Precinct?
A fake-up of Prestwich Multi Storey Carpark (MSC), roughly to scale. Based on a generic MSC (Lowry Centre actually now you asked), the revised master plans for Your Prestwich Regen, and the stated ~350 spaces. I count 93 on the ground floor, 108 on 1st and 2nd floors then 52 on the 3rd floor (4th storey) stood beside OLOG hall. (361 in tota, 19 wide spaces on the Ground floor). Whether the finish is concrete, brick, polished chrome, rusty iron, or a living wall etc... is up for grabs, so I've left it as "generic". prestwich.org.uk/yours
A lost path of Heaton Park can just be made out from above. Appearing in the 1920s the path had a dogs leg above the paddling pool to handle the steep slope, and linked over the field to the Heaton Park Station Lodge entrance until the 1950's, bit it had gone from the map of 1963.
You will often hear myself and @alanjennings wittering on about Sir William Fairbairn. You may even recall some of the detail if you've been on a churchyard tour with us, like his use of the box girder. Here's a great little video about his work on the original Britannia Bridge across the Menai Straits for Robert Stevenson's railway to Anglesey. (the bridge was damaged by a fire in 1970 - when a torch dropped by kids playing inside set fire to the tar coated wood on the roof).
