Objects on display at the Emery Walker House, 7 Hammersmith Terrace in London. Emery Walker (1851-1933) was an engraver, photographer and printer as well as a close friend of William Morris who he helped found The Kelmscott Press. Walker took an active role in many organisations that were at the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement, including the Art Workers Guild, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. Several of these objects highlight the close relationship between both men and their families. It contains some of Morris’s personal items including his pens, spectacles and, rather poignantly, a cutting of his hair, with a note 'Morris' hair Oct.3 [day of Morris's death] 1896 cut off by Miss Gillespie for me E.W.'

Our curator, Helen Elletson, recently travelled to Stockholm to supervise the installation of items from our collection on loan to Millesgården, the museum home of sculptor Karl Milles. This exciting exhibition of Morris's work is thought to be the first of its kind to be held in Sweden, and also features loans from the William Morris Gallery, Morris & Co. at Style Library, and Bradford Museums & Galleries. The exhibition runs until February 2019 before touring to Denmark, Iceland and Edinburgh. You can learn more here:

We’re asking the staff and volunteers at Arts & Crafts Hammersmith to tell us their favourite item from the Houses and collections. This week it comes from Emery Walker's House Manager Harriet.

Harriet has chosen the famed (and still very fruitful) item from the House:
"I love this grape vine in the conservatory of Emery Walker House because it's gnarled trunk is indicative of it's longevity and because legend has it, it was taken from a cutting from a nearby vine of Hogarth's"

We’re asking the staff and volunteers at Arts & Crafts Hammersmith to tell us their favourite item from the collections. This week it comes from Student Placement Denise.

Denise has chosen an item from The William Morris Society's collection. This is a hand drawn design by William Morris which would be made in to an embroidered altar cloth for Llandaff Cathedral in Wales. After earlier restoration, in the 1860's Seddon brought in the likes of Rosetti, Burne-Jones and Morris to decorate the site with beautiful stained glass and textiles.

The William Morris Society

The first exhibition in Sweden dedicated to the works of William Morris is now open and runs until 3rd February 2019. 'More Than Floral Wallpaper' is being held at Millesgarden, Herserudsvägen 32, Lidingö, Stockholm.

The Society is lending twenty items to this exhibition, ranging from tiles and embroideries to original watercolours and wallpapers.

The exhibition features Morris artworks, wallpaper, fabrics and furniture and according to the museum, 'presents his life and work. It is the story of a successful businessman and manufacturer who was also a fervent socialist'.

We’re asking the staff and volunteers at Arts & Crafts Hammersmith to tell us their favourite item from the collections. Our first instalment of this is from Hugh Hobbs:

“I’ve chosen a Walter Crane woodcut made to celebrate International Workers’ Day 1891, signed on the back of the frame by the artist himself! Walter Crane was a key figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and his drawings are found in William Morris's Socialist publications, such as the newspaper Commonweal. I found it whilst cataloguing the collection at Emery Walker's House and particularly like the use pastoral forms of Socialist imagery and the use of rousing slogans.”

Meet volunteer, Helen Bench, who likes nothing better than donning her handling gloves and rummaging through the boxes at Emery Walker's House.
I’m a remarkable woman – always was, though none of you seemed to think so,’ wrote May Morris to former lover George Bernard Shaw in 1936, just a few years before her death. May felt overshadowed by her famous father in her lifetime, but now a retrospective exhibition and catalogue celebrates her contribution to design, textiles, wallpaper and embroidery, revealing her exceptional skill and creativity. Look out for the five pieces that The William Morris Society has lent the exhibition which starts next month. This catalogue has just been published to coincide with it.
