Victoria's Lost Pavilion

Victoria's Lost Pavilion A project to virtually recreate Queen Victoria's art-filled summer-house, in existence between 1843-1928 in Buckingham Palace Gardens. A digital humanities project from researchers at North Carolina State University, "Victoria’s Lost Pavilion" virtually reconstructs Queen Victoria’s Buckingham Palace garden pavilion, a spectacular Victorian time capsule which presents to scholars a nexus of different artistic styles, influences, and critical conversations.

Using caches of historical materials, we are reconstructing a virtual three-dimensional model of the pavilion to facilitate interactive engagement with a lost piece of history as well as collaborative interdisciplinary scholarship on the intersecting domains of literature, architecture, theater, archaeology, fresco, and other decorative arts. Because of its complexities—even in its time, the pavilion was recognized as an “experiment”—the pavilion offers a unique challenge for modeling complex spatial and critical narratives within an immersive virtual environment. Victoria’s Lost Pavilion aims to develop new dynamic components of such a historical model in a web-based 3D environment with interactive textual, historical, and critical components.
