Barbary pies (also known as Barbary corsairs) were maritime raiders and privateers who opeed from the Barbary Coast of North Africa between the 16th and early 19th centuries ๐ŸŒŠ. Their bases were primarily located in the cities of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli, which formally acknowledged the authority of the Ottoman Empire but enjoyed a high degree of autonomy ๐Ÿฐ. The corsairs attacked European merchant and passenger ships in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, capturing crews and travelers for ransom or sale into slavery โš“. Their activities posed a major threat to European and American maritime trade ๐Ÿšข. The most prominent leaders among them were Oruรง Reis and his brother Hayreddin Barbarossa, who later became an admiral of the Ottoman navy ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ. Sustained military campaigns by Western powers and the U.S. Navy in the early 19th century led to the gradual decline and eventual end of Barbary โš”๏ธ.

Lโ€™Inconnue de la Seine (โ€œThe Unknown Woman of the Seineโ€) is the name given to an unidentified young woman whose body was recovered from the River Seine in Paris, most likely at the end of the 19th century. ๐ŸŒŠ Her body showed no signs of violence, leading authorities to believe that she had taken her own life. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ At the Paris morgue, the examining pathologist was reportedly so struck by the serene beauty of her face โ€” which had remained almost untouched by drowning โ€” that he ordered a plaster cast (death mask) to be made of her features. ๐ŸŽญ The mask, surrounded by mystery and speculation, soon became a source of fascination among artists, poets, and intellectuals throughout Europe. ๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ Copies of the mask spread widely, and the face of the โ€œUnknown Woman of the Seineโ€ became an icon of beauty, melancholy, and poetic death โ€” inspiring countless works of art and liteure. ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ In 1958โ€“59, Norwegian toymaker ร…smund Laerdal, working with doctors Peter Safar and James Elam, sought a realistic human face for a new CPR training mannequin. ๐Ÿฉบ He chose the face of Lโ€™Inconnue de la Seine as his model, making minor adjustments for medical use โ€” and thus, the mannequin known as โ€œResusci Anneโ€ was born. ๐Ÿซ Because millions of people have practiced mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on her likeness, she is often referred to as โ€œthe most kissed woman in the world.โ€ ๐Ÿ’‹ Although the full truth behind her identity remains unknown โ€” and historians debate whether the story of the maskโ€™s origin is entirely factual โ€” the legend of the girl from the Seine endures as one of the most haunting and poetic mysteries of modern Europe. ๐ŸŒ™
