Gagosian is pleased to present Spencer Sweeney's new painting "Serena" (2014–22), now online for forty-eight hours only.

Picturing tennis legend Serena Williams in flowing strokes against a warm yellow ground marked with pastel flourishes, the painting is consistent with the artist’s ongoing interest in representing powerful women. Stretching for the ball, the subject seems to merge with her environment in a singular expression of athletic energy, focus, and skill. In its fluid look and open-ended feel, "Serena" also echoes Sweeney’s commitment to an experimental investigation of the creative process: https://on.gagosian.com/3BhDD1y

Join us tonight from 6 to 8pm for the opening of “Baby, It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over,” an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Anna Weyant, at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York!

Weyant’s figurative paintings are images of feminine composure undercut by dream logic, the small awkwardnesses of her doll-like subjects’ smooth-skinned bodies hinting at the manipulative influence of unseen hands. But far from reacting with overt violence to the binds—expected or not—in which they find themselves, these women and girls opt instead for a cool remove, an agency in the form of quiet refusal: https://on.gagosian.com/3zi6IsH

This week, Spencer Sweeney features in Artist Spotlight! Sweeney has been a vital presence in the art, nightlife, and music of New York for more than twenty years. In addition to making paintings, drawings, and collages characterized by infectious exuberance and raw materiality, Sweeney produces multimedia environments that transform gallery spaces into open workshops and performance stages.

Artist Spotlight: Spencer Sweeney features a new painting by the artist. The work will be unveiled below on Friday, December 9, at 6am EST: https://on.gagosian.com/3BhDD1y

Gagosian is pleased to present “Neon Ark,” an exhibition of new neon works by Douglas Gordon, which is on view at Gagosian, Davies Street, London!

The show—Gordon’s first gallery exhibition devoted entirely to text works in neon—acknowledges the medium’s change in status from a common platform for commercial signage toward a rarified technology superseded by digital display: https://on.gagosian.com/3Vy5ra5

Gagosian is pleased to celebrate the start of the holiday season in Gstaad with “Stanley Whitney: Paintings on Paper" opening December 19. Marking the third exhibition at Gstaad, the gallery’s newest location, it features gouaches made by Whitney between 2015 and 2021.

Whitney’s paintings imbue loose “stacked” compositions with dynamic and unpredictable rhythms of color and space. Inspired by sources as diverse as experimental jazz and American quilt making, he marshals energetically brushed blocks and bars of pigment distinguished by transparency and tension wherever they intersect: https://on.gagosian.com/3Vwhq7T

It is with great sadness that Gagosian announces the death of Ashley Bickerton, at the age of sixty-three, in Bali, Indonesia. Ashley died from complications relating to ALS.

Ashley was a force within the New York art world beginning in the 1980s. Throughout this lifetime, he inspired younger artists as well as his peers with his unique blend of humor and irony across mediums including painting, sculpture, and photography.

Gagosian was proud to add Ashley to the gallery’s roster earlier this year. We will honor his legacy well into the future, beginning with a solo exhibition of his historical and recent works that we planned together for New York in 2023.

Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch are pleased to announce "100 Years," their seventh annual collaborative group exhibition, opening Monday, November 28. On view during Miami Art Week at the historic Buick Building in the city’s Design District, and online at gagosian-deitch.com, "100 Years" explores the interplay of past, present, and future through contemporary works in a range of mediums.

It focuses on artists who recognize the critical nature of a period of sweeping social and cultural change while alluding to the ephemerality of human life and memory. And while in dialogue with the art of the past century, it also anticipates possible future advances: https://on.gagosian.com/3GDCRQ3

Jim Shaw | Gagosian

This week, Jim Shaw features in Artist Spotlight! Since the 1970s, Shaw has responded to American cultural history through painting, drawing, and sculpture. He draws from sources as wide-ranging as comic books, pulp novels, rock albums, protest posters, and amateur paintings.

Often unfolding in extended narrative cycles, Shaw’s works juxtapose images of friends and family with those depicting world events, pop-cultural phenomena, and alternative realities, blending the personal, the commonplace, and the visionary.

An exhibition of new painting by Sterling Ruby titled "TURBINES" is now on view at Gagosian, West 21st Street, New York!

Making reference not only to turbines and windmills, but also to hurricanes, explosions, fires, war, and geographical boundaries, cardboard components are blasted across the canvas, suggesting that elemental forces are pushing them toward the edges of the frame. Rather than implying the observation of action from behind a window, they thrust the viewer into the fray. The combination of oil paint with bright cardboard swatches is tumultuous, as if a storm has blown the window apart and set its elements in motion: https://on.gagosian.com/3E3YAhc

Friends and Relations: Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews, Grosvenor Hill, London, November 17, 2022–January 28, 2023 | Gagosian

“Friends and Relations: Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews,” opens on Thursday, November 17, at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London. Join us from 6 to 8pm for the opening reception!

Portraiture was at the heart of Freud’s, Bacon’s, Auerbach’s, and, less directly, Andrews’s practices. The exhibition’s title echoes not only the four artists’ camaraderie and interrelationships, but also the intimate relationships between artist and sitter, including artist and lover, partner, and offspring.

Also on view at Grosvenor Hill will be a selection of photographs of the four artists by their friend, the distinguished picture editor, writer, and photographer, Bruce Bernard.

Find out more about the upcoming exhibition Friends and Relations: Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews at Gagosian Grosvenor Hill, London.

"Exodus," an exhibition of new works by Anselm Kiefer, opens on Saturday, November 19, at Gagosian at Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles. The show is also on view in New York at the gallery's 555 West 24th Street location.

In this new body of work, Kiefer employs a wide range of materials including paint, terra-cotta, fabric, rope, wire, found objects, sediment of electrolysis, and metal—including copper and gold leaf. Mixing the abject and the exalted, these works are imbued with gesture, a sense of metamorphosis, and alchemical symbolism: https://on.gagosian.com/3AiDCtI

"We’ll Keep On Dancing Till We Pay the Rent," an exhibition of new works by Glenn Brown, is now open at Gagosian, 541 West 24th Street, New York.

The new paintings on view in New York include double portraits, twisted figures, and a large-scale still life with ripened quinces. In addition to paintings and drawings, the exhibition also features two new sculptures, "So**ed" and "Hey Nonny Nonny/The Busker’s Empty Cap," both of which recall the singular brushwork of Frank Auerbach and the monochromatic bronzes of Willem de Kooning: https://on.gagosian.com/3SqFN4R

Join us tonight from 4 to 8pm for the opening reception of “Face of a Woman, Head of a Child,” a new body of work by Karin Kneffel, at Gagosian, Rome.

In her unprecedented approach to portraiture, she depicts the faces of historical polychrome wooden figures, rendered uncanny and arresting by upscaling and cropping. In addition to these works, Kneffel harnesses the full powers of her painterly methods to describe in granular detail the strong contours and subtle nuances of fruits in her still lifes: https://on.gagosian.com/3DA6mAj

Join us tonight, November 10, from 6 to 8pm, for the opening reception of Sterling Ruby's exhibition "TURBINES" at Gagosian, West 21st Street, New York!

The "TURBINE" paintings are born from Ruby’s desire to make works that are not pictorial, figurative, or didactic, but that still contain recognizable and thought-provoking elements. In its elicitation of speed and devastation—specifically self-destruction—“TURBINES” inevitably evokes the Futurists and Russian Constructivism: https://on.gagosian.com/3E3YAhc

“May your love be the vestment of my sorrows and the garment of our profound joy.”
—Theaster Gates

Gagosian is pleased to announce “Vestment,” an exhibition of new works by Theaster Gates opening November 12 at 976 Madison Avenue, New York. “Vestment,” a new series of tar paintings or 'torch works' by Gates, continues the artist’s ongoing engagement with formalism and mark making at the scale of the roof.

In this suite of paintings and a sculpture, Gates diverges from earlier monochromatic torch works and experiments with color as a formal device for exploring spiritual and stylistic hierarchies, religious garments and aggrandizement, and the symbolism and universalism of nationhood: https://on.gagosian.com/3DTlE1Y

After his last New York exhibition in 2014, Brown spent time concentrating exclusively on drawing, describing it as “the skeleton that holds the composition of any painting together.” In this exhibition, titled "We’ll Keep On Dancing Till We Pay the Rent," the technique becomes his starting point; each painting is based on an appropriated drawing: https://on.gagosian.com/3SqFN4R

“Baby, It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over” takes its title from a song by Lenny Kravitz and riffs in self-aware fashion on popular expectations of a young artist’s career trajectory. "Into the Trees II"—an exhibition of new sculptures by Setsuko in ceramic, bronze, and wood, inspired by the richness of the natural world—closes this Saturday, October 29, at Gagosian, Rome.

Made of terra-cotta that she glazes in a milky white enamel, Setsuko’s ceramic sculptures of oak, magnolia, rose, lemon, quince, pomegranate, and fig trees, and grapevines emphasize the rooted solidity of their trunks and the gnarled texture of their bark. Their imposing forms and delicate surfaces convey strength developed over years of survival as well as emergent new growth. Also on view will be sculptural candelabras in bronze adorned with grapevine, fig, and pomegranate motifs: https://on.gagosian.com/3bugvmT
