The mighty organ in the Great Hall of Alexandra Palace has been described as 'a world class instrument'. Created by Henry Willis & Sons Ltd. it has suffered over the years, through two world wars and neglect. It needs and enjoys the constant attentions of loyal supporters. And it plays beautifully. http://www.allypallyorgan.org.uk/

Beer & Beer Festivals loomed large in the life of Ally Pally during the 1970s. A beer festival was inaugurated in 1972 (beer mat souvenir for the tegestologists), but it was after the founding of CAMRA (campaign for real ale) that better and larger events were held in the Palace. Entry to the 1977 festival, also the same year as HM The Queen's Silver Jubilee, was by purchasing a half-pint mug. Subsequently, souvenir badges were issued to commemorate the event and in 1979 Hanson's Mild won the prix d'honneur!

Dr Francis Alexander Barton was born in Dover on 17 May 1861. He had an idea for a dirigible balloon & got a contract from HM Government for a prototype, which was constructed in a purpose-built hangar by the boating lake at Alexandra Palace. Inaugural flight took place in 1905 - travelling to Romford, where it crashed!

Exhibitions have been popular at Alexandra Palace throughout its history. Commemorative medals (like this example from 1881) or simple souvenirs - such as the horse brass from 1999 or the bobbin from the Knitting & Stitching Show 1998 - are popular items in the 'museum'.

The National Traction Engine Trust

We recently got asked a question as to the whereabouts of Robey Steam Tractor, 33957 'Village Queen', built in 1915, by a former owner.

As you may expect although we knew the answers we did not divulge the specifics and we'd like to reassure all Engine Owners that if an engine is featured here, and a question follows, we'll never give out personal information.

If you are making enquiries, we are happy to if possible pass your details on to Owners, who will take it upon themselves or otherwise to reply.

This fine image has been shared from our own Steam Apprentice Club Instagram, which now has over 2000 Followers!

TONY BINDER
This Christmas card for PoWs and internees at Alexandra Palace during the First World War was designed by Anton ‘Tony’ Binder, where he was interned, in 1915. Two versions exist, English and German. He was transferred to the Douglas Camp (Isle of Man) from Alexandra Palace in June 1917. It is said that he was in charge of painting the scenery for the comedy 'Die Kinder' at the German Theatre, Douglas (Easter 1918). Soon afterwards, he was transferred from Douglas Camp to Spalding (Lincolnshire) in April 1918 for repatriation.
Binder was born in Vienna in 1868. He studied at academies in Vienna and Munich, but later lived in Alexandria (where he painted portraits of Howard Carter and George Bernard Shaw!) He travelled throughout Egypt, Istanbul, Venice, Italy and France, gathering inspiration for his work, but is best known for his orientalist paintings. He died in Nordlinger, Bavaria, in 1944.

Opened in the Park, in 1868, before the Palace itself was finished, was the horse racecourse, at the bottom of the slope on the southern side. Nicknamed “The Frying Pan” due to its shape – the racecourse continued to operate until 1970. Many jockeys considered the sharp circular part of the course to be dangerous, and not many rued its passing. The paddock area subsequently became a car park and the grandstand was demolished.

Transport at the Palace. Photo from 1907, and by 1913, the tram "electric railway" had termini at the west and east fronts. There was no road going through the park, until in 1938, a through-road was completed for the 233 bus, shown here on a 1967 postcard.

Pre-dating the Alexandra Palace was The Tudor Hall, on the east side towards Wood Green. Its distinctive wood-frame design could accommodate large banquets, balls and a gymnasium. Used for clothing manufacture during WW2, the name changed to the Blandford Hall. It was finally used for storing paint and varnish – which no doubt contributed to the speed with which it burnt down on Saturday July 17 1971. The people here are enjoying happier times at a fancy dress ball!

Ribbon plates, to which you would add your own ribbons to reflect your mood, are rare survivors of the Victorian urge to acquire souvenirs of a visit to the mighty new Alexandra Palace. A commemorative plate from 1969 maintains the same tradition, here from a crafts guilds Dinner & Dance in 1969.

During World War l, Wellington House was the British establishment’s #propaganda machine. They recruited a Canadian born MP Sir Gilbert Parker to support the war effort. Gilbert Parker’s objective was to convince America to support the British cause in the war, working on the theory of "gentle and modest courtship."
Some more photos here were published to show the decent way that the British treated the enemy aliens and PoWs. And cheery Christmas Greetings cards were produced to be sent to friends and relatives.

Under the Palace is a maze of basements, storage rooms & cellars. Some of these spaces were the kitchens in the 1870s, and it is likely that the' third class' eating areas were located here too. During the wartime period 1914-1919, refugees and PoWs had workshops and correctional facilities!

The occasional coincidence: today is Monday 14 August 2017. And on Monday 14 August 1911, this comical group The Rustics performed at Alexandra Palace! Percy Honri (1874-1953), with his eponymous pavilion, was the son of the music-hall performer Henry Thompson, who had been a child star of variety and music-hall as a clog dancer, boy tenor and concertina player. The stage-name Honri, later adopted by the family as their surname, was a printing typo on a theatrical handbill, a mis-spelling of Henri!

Beautiful 1924 Exhibition diploma awarded to the wine importers Puhalovic brothers from Fiume (now Rijeka in Croatia). Originally from the island of Vis, they had a big shipping company; first tea clippers running from India to Europe and later wines from the Dalmatian coast. Any further information on such diplomas would be most welcome.
