Dennis Severs' House

Dennis Severs' House An 18th Century time capsule in Spitalfields, London which is open to the public for daytime and eve The house is a time capsule - sometimes opened up.

Its creator was Dennis Severs, an artist who used his visitors' imaginations as his canvas and who lived in the house in much the same way as its original occupants might have done in the early 18th Century. Dennis Severs called his unique spectators sport "still-life drama", and his goal was to provide his visitors with a rare moment in which to become as lost in another time as they appear to be in their own.

Standing before you in all its glory is the toilet mirror from the Queen Anne period, owned by Elizabeth Jarvis’ Grandmother. A unique part of the Oriental inspired master bedroom created by Dennis Severs and so fashionable in the late 18th century. Laden with all her possessions of beautification, the pearls that adorned her neck and her wig whose feathers patiently rest upon the stand to the left. Take note of her gloves, fan and shoe buckles, all casually cast aside creating the illusion of life, interrupted, not absent but still like a painting.

I hope you’ve all had an enjoyable and safe Easter weekend. Thanks SO much to for having me - I’ve absolutely loved doing this little Instagram takeover and sharing my love of patterns and gingerbread with you all!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’ve been inspired to make some decorative gingerbread tiles yourself then please do share your pics using the hashtag - I’d love to see them. Here are a few examples of real life patterns that I’ve taken and transformed into edible versions. I just love taking inspiration from interiors, particularly ones so rich and full of interest as the rooms in Dennis’s House. As well as tiles, I also enjoy focusing on the details in antique furniture design and fireplaces; my favourite part of the Christmas DSH building was making the gingerbread chairs and tables to go in the miniature gingerbread dining room.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve also previously made a whole series of cakes featuring the round, symmetrical patterns of old, cast iron coal covers (like manhole covers). There really are beautiful patterns everywhere you look and there’s no reason they can’t make incredible bakes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you’d like some more gingerbread and baking inspiration please follow me over on . Wishing you all a lovely Easter Monday. 👋

Wishing you a very happy Easter Sunday! I hope you’re having a lovely sunny weekend.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For those of you who fancy doing some baking this weekend, check our Instagram stories for my trusty gingerbread recipe (for a written version, including baking temps and times), along with some examples of how I like to recreate patterns. As you can see, I LOVE using a combination of painted edible metallic + detailed piped royal icing. My decorations tend to keep quite a lot of the gingerbread visible, because I love the contrast of the deep brown background and don’t like to add too much icing/sugar to the overall flavour of the biscuits.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’ve been inspired to make your own edible tiles, there are all sorts of great decoration materials you can find in your kitchen cupboard: nuts (almonds are perfect) and/or dried fruit create really interesting textures (as well as enhancing the flavour of the finished product) and can be attached using a little royal icing (egg white mixed with icing sugar) or melted sugar. If you do have some fondant icing that’s a really easy way of creating a pattern – simply roll it out, use a normal kitchen knife to cut out shapes, and build up the design as you go. Or if you have a stash of family favourite biscuits, think about how you could cut them into useful shapes to form your pattern; chocolate fingers and pink wafers are particularly good for this. Use a sharp or serrated knife to slowly saw through them. Let me know how you get on!

Emily from here! When it comes to translating an existing design to use in my baking projects, I always start by drawing some of the main elements on squared paper, just to get the dimensions roughed out. Or, if the object is accessible, I sometimes even trace patterns directly onto tracing paper (or baking parchment, which I tend to have lots of!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I spend some time getting the basic elements laid out, but then will often cut out shapes for the remainder of a design - from paper, card or biscuits (if I have offcuts to use up) - and physically move them around until I’m happy with it. And for my 3D gingerbread work I’ll build whole structures out of cardboard so I can cut and resize pieces as I go before I decide on the final design. I find this combination of rigidity and fluidity results in new, creative, but achievable designs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tomorrow I’m going to share my classic gingerbread recipe with you, so if you’d like to bake some gingerbread tiles, spend some time mapping out the decoration today. Try plain/squared/parchment paper and pencils/pens to copy an existing design, or just cut out shapes and create your own symmetrical, tile-like pattern. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Welcome to the first day of my Instagram takeover for ! I’m Emily from and I’m going to be sharing how I come up with exciting baking designs inspired by beautiful interiors (like Dennis Severs’ House). Hopefully you’ll also be inspired to try out some new ideas while baking at home this Easter weekend.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today’s pic is the wall in my kitchen-studio; as you’ll see, tile designs are a big influence on me. And there are SO MANY exquisite tiles throughout Dennis’s House - some so hidden you have to crouch to get a glimpse of them. (Swipe to see my personal favourite, a hand-painted tile of Gilbert & George 😍)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I find the symmetry and detail of tile patterns work really well on cakes, biscuits and other treats, and you can choose how much of the pattern to use, keeping it simple or going all out recreating the glorious intricacies. (I tend to prefer the latter as I get really into piping lots of little lines and dots of icing.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Please comment below if you have any beautiful tiles in your home and are up for the challenge of recreating the design in baked form.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tomorrow I’ll be sharing all my top tips for exactly how to do that, so see you then! @ Dennis Severs' House

The Honourable Madge Whitechapel is being well looked after and adapting admirably to her new surroundings - a new century indeed - in a contemporary gallery space in Bethnal Green thankfully not far from her usual home. Her Madgesty misses ‪18 Folgate Street‬ with the endless nooks and crannies to explore and the many friendly spiders she had built up such a good rapport with over the years. On the upside she is absolutely flabbergasted by the invention ’the radiator’ and finds it particularly hard not to spend her entire day happily wedged underneath it. She has also developed quite a keen eye for contemporary art.

Thank you IMT Gallery for taking care of our dear Madge. We will keep updating you with her progress and her newly acquired taste for the Contemporary London Art scene.

For the last year and a half our incredibly talented friend Rebecca Wright has been drawing each of the main rooms of 18 Folgate Street.

“When I first saw Dennis Severs’ House on television a few years ago I immediately wanted to visit, it looked beautiful and eccentric. I am an illustrator and I was looking for a project. History, architecture and the curious have always interested me, so the house was a perfect fit.''

''Dennis decided to supplement his income by conducting horse-drawn tours through the back streets of West London. He acquired carriage and horse and found stable and lodgings in a mews on Gloucester Road.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By the late 70's, a developer had bought the stable, and Mr. Severs and his horse were evicted. According to The Daily Telegraph, the Queen responded to the publicity and offered Mr. Severs a stable in the Royal Mews. For several months, he accepted the offer and then moved on to other things.''

When are you opening up again to the public for visits?
Good evening from Germany!
We are great fans of your house and visited it twice so far. We absolutely love it!
And we loved to meet Mable (is this her name?), your cute little black cat sleeping there.
As we are missing London a lot, we are watching TV documentaries about the capital and your house was mentioned as well.
Taking a look at your page I’m a bit worried that you haven’t posted anything since May 2020.
We really hope you are all okay Mable is fine as well.
Hope to visit your house at our next London trip maybe in summer again! ❤️
Happy Birthday Madge ..😻😻
Going in March as a 60th birthday present from my sister and brother in law, can not wait 😊
After many years of "must go there", today was finally the day.
What a haunting and enchanted place. I feel it will stay with me for a long time. Thank you.
I just read up on this House and the story behind it, and I must say I am so intrigued.... Wow
Because of its uniqueness.
Hi,

Would like to come to one of the Sunday admissions. Is it so busy that it's necessary to come early? Or will we be Ok anytime before last admission? (Dec 16). Thank you.
Next visit to London which will be next year I must visit this place.
Have just seen the out and about on the Central line posters and Your listed for Liverpool Street 😊
