‘Harvesting’ été en Normandie on wall of Molecey Mill.

This fabulous painting captures rural Normandy at harvest, a rolling vista of countryside confirming Robin’s ability to position pure colours side by side, creating startlingly naturalistic views.

The plein air approach was pioneered by John Constable in Britain around 1813 and around 1860 became fundamental to the Impressionist movement. Painting en plein air was made effortless with the introduction of tubes paints, artists could finally carry ready to use pigment to a desired location and start painting immediately.

A painting completed en plein air was painted outside from start to finish, ‘La Serve’ by George Charles Robin is a fantastic example of this approach to working.

Robin, a master at capturing temperature and atmosphere combined his deft and delicate touch with vigorous brushstrokes and a palette knife. This enabled him to produce exceptional landscapes, harbour scenes and field studies.

You can see Robin’s skill throughout the exquisite painting above, his ability to emphasise nature’s basic structure is still to this day, remarkable. Just look at those watery ripples expertly captured.

The build up has begun on the Burghley Estate as we eagerly await the start of the Burghley Horse Trials. We’re extremely excited to announce contemporary artist Martin Taylor is joining Gladwells Rutland, and painting live on our stand located at aisle A.

Martin's passion for the English countryside is legendary. He immerses himself in the fields, woods and hedgerows around his studio in Northamptonshire.

This is how he can reflect on every detail in his paintings and capture how the natural world, the seasons and weather effect our countryside.

Do come and say hello, he’ll be ready to answer any questions you have about his original works of art surrounded by a collection of oil and watercolours.

Our Marine exhibition is making a splash at 5 Beauchamp Place with artists Ronny Moortgat, Derek G. M. Gardner, Helen Bradley, James Brereton, Keith Snow, Montague Dawson and Roger Chapelet to name a few!

‘Battle of the Nile, 1798’ by Ronny Moortgat, is a depiction of arguably the most important tactical naval encounter fought between the British Royal Navy and the Navy of the French Republic.

For two whole days the battle raged with Napoleon Bonaparte seeking a strategic gain from Egypt; however this was not to be. Under the command of Sir Horatio Nelson the British fleet sailed to victory and blasted the ambitions of Napoleon out of the water.

Nelson, although wounded in battle would return home victorious, remembered as a hero in Britain’s battle to win control of the seas.

The Battle of the Nile proved decisive and significant in the changing fortunes of these respective nations. Britain’s prominence on the world stage was well and truly established, for Nelson, this was just the beginning.

This week we have decorated our walls with a variety of fantastic marine paintings to celebrate Cowes Week, one of the longest-running regular regattas in the world.

With 40 daily sailing races, around 500 boats, and 2500 competitors ranging from Olympic and world-class professionals to weekend sailors, it is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.

Started in 1826, the event is held in August each year on the Solent, and is run by Cowes Week Limited in the small town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

“I could not imagine a single day passing without talking about, reading about, or actually taking part in some kind of activity concerning art.

Like a moth is drawn to a flame, a painter is drawn to light, and although I have tried to express myself with paintings in many different forms, mediums and styles over the years.

My path has lead me inexorably, like so many other before me, to try and capture that elusive quality of light, that only a shimmering sunset, dawn of a new day, dazzling sparkle of reflection off both sea and river presents to the one who is prepared to both look and see”.

Peter’s style is bold and vigorous, both in use of colour and handling of paint, as he explores the effect of light on his subject. He works in varying degrees of abstraction, seeking to explore atmosphere through light and colour.

He has won many awards for his painting and can be found in private collections internationally.

You will find a collection of his stunning paintings on the Gladwell & Patterson stand 201 at The Newport Show.

It’s going to be a busy week for our two galleries Gladwell & Patterson and Gladwells Rutland.

The Newport Show opens on 28th July - 30th July, 375 Purgatory Road, Newport with Glenn, Emily and Sophia in the heart of New England. Our stand 201 will be showcasing exceptional modern and contemporary artists including Raymond Wintz (French, 1884-1956).

Wintz’s ‘Ploumanach, Côte du Nord’, is an immediate storybook told through his celebration of light. The day has well and truly begun in this piece.

At first, you see a woman, making her way up a dusty path. She carries a wicker basket in both hands, but what is she carrying? They look quite laden!

Two more figures are perched on the harbour wall, they don’t seem to be chatting, perhaps they’re working, fixing nets and getting the docked boats ready to launch.

In a doorway, a mother and baby oversee the turning of washing, can you hear water churning around the metal basin?

Pink sparks the imagination and it’s inspirations is felt throughout the art world. It evokes a sense of enchantment and light-hearted perspective.

It reminds us to embrace our most imaginative selves and approach life with curiosity and joy.

Simplicity at its finest, a magnificent Alexandre Louis Jacob (French, 1876-1972) can elevate an interior whatever the proportions.

It was the endless skies the French Landscape offered that appealed to Jacob and more often than not, his horizon sits in the lower third of his compositions, giving a large amount of space to focus on fleeting clouds above and fringes of luminosity.

The vast openness of his paintings create a sense of calm and contemplation, punctuated by elongated poplar trees and figures that rise from below and ground the viewer.

A master of capturing France, Jacob’s colours change subtly throughout the seasons. In autumn the works contain a golden aura, in winter, like this piece above, a soft creamy light diffuses across the piece with gentle hues or pinks, blues and reflections on riverbanks.

Preferring to capture paint in the quiet moments after a passing storm, each of his landscapes have a unique atmosphere of tranquility, he was a true master at his easel and we’re very much looking forward to sharing them with you at our upcoming international exhibitions.

Today an “Only in the Hamptons” Extraordinary Experience as we celebrate Pablo Picasso.

Join the popular International “Celebration Picasso, 1973-2023” and salute the artist on the 50th anniversary of his death. HFAF brings their version of this ambitious, historic transnational program and is the largest display of Picasso works ever assembled in the Hamptons.

Picasso is considered the most influential artists of the 20th century, with an enduring impact on the art world in the 21st century.

The celebration has been organised by the culture ministries of Spain and France with over 40 art museums and galleries in Europe and the US (16 in Spain, 12 in France, and 7 in the US) hosting exhibitions to explore Pablo Picasso–the man, the myth, the work, and his artistic legacy.

This includes Gladwell & Patterson’s phenomenal MASTERPIECES exhibition in Knightsbridge, London open until next week.

Unlike museums, every piece of art work on display this weekend at Hamptons Fine Art Fair is available for immediate acquisition. Our beautifully rare paintings and sculpture on stand 342 are a must-see for both collectors with a passion for possession, as well as art history buffs.

There are many great things about working with the calibre of paintings we do, but one of our favourite moments is when we come across invaluable treasures in addition to the painting, like this handwritten note.

Artworks make their way to our gallery with hidden histories attached and often we have to search for their complex provenance.

This little note was simply glued to the reverse of ‘Attelage Bord de Rivière’ by French artist Alexandre Louis Jacob.

Can you see a number stuck to the front on the frame? This is significant, it tells us this particular painting was accepted and chosen to hang at the Paris Salon!

We also know that this is the original frame, chosen by Jacob himself. We know for certain because of the hand-carved nature of the frame, the little dashes cut out to create an elegant, rhythmic detail to accompany his oil.

See this piece of art history up-close on our stand 342 at the Hamptons Fine Art Fair in a few days time 🖌️

Gladwell & Patterson have long since championed the phenomenal works of art by Alexandre Louis Jacob (French, 1876-1972).

‘A Tranquil Morning’ pictured above encapsulates morning breaking over a peaceful autumn scene, with glittering watery reflections you can almost hear the birdsong.

It was the early 1950s when Gladwell & Patterson first exhibited Jacob’s stunning landscapes and we have become reconsider as the worlds experts on his works.

His beautiful pieces form the cornerstone of any discerning collection and we can’t wait to show them at the Hamptons Fine Art Fair.

As part of our gallery team land safely in the US, some take on the UKs Game Fair and others work tirelessly in London in our Masterpieces exhibition (which, is only open for one more week!).

We wanted to share with you this tranquil landscape painting by Pierre de Clausade, a master of capturing the essence of the seasons. His delicate oils contain the ever-changing essence of our skies with an unmatched brilliance.

Clausade’s brushstrokes dance across his canvases and are perfectly appointed, each of his finished canvases infused with a radiant, slightly Cubist, energy.

He skilfully worked on a style unique for his time with shafts of sunlight piercing puffy, cloudy skies, creating a celebration of weathered atmosphere.

The layers of great cloud mass lead us into the beauty of the natural world. Clausade took his cue from the Cubists, with their simplified form and the Art Nouveau themes of order and harmony.

Although this painting has since found a home, do take a browse of our website to see more of the Pierre De Clausade (French, 1910-1976) collection.

A spectacular painting ‘Côte Rocheuse’ by Paul Madeline has been carefully selected by Emily and Sophia to cross the Atlantic Ocean for Hamptons Fine Art Fair 2023 which excitingly, opens this Thursday!

PAUL MADELINE
French (1863-1920)

Paul Madeline grew up inspired by the works of the great Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters; Monet, Seurat and Pissarro and begun his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

His en plein air landscapes are wonderfully evocative and playfully colourful, this oil is truly a treat for the eyes and you’ll be able to view on stand 342.

As Madeline travelled across France, from the Mediterranean to Brittany he absorbed a wealth of inspiration and exhibited extensively at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français. He even received an honourable mention for his paintings in 1897, the same year that he was elected a member. (He also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes, the Salon d’Automne and the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts).

Madeline’s gorgeous landscape paintings can now be found in notable public collections including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, Limoges, Nantes and Pau.

Perhaps this Madeline is destined for your wall?

Gladwells have been championing Charles Perron’s charming paintings since the early 1930’s when Herbert Fuller first encountered Perron’s paintings on a visit to the Salon des Artistes Français for their Summer Exhibition in Paris.

Herbert Fuller was so enchanted with the captivating depictions of rural French life, be they the intimate cottage scenes, the delicate still lifes or the beguiling nudes, that he travelled to meet Charles at his studio in Nantes.

The two gentlemen hit it off and there began a rewarding lifelong friendship which has extended between the families through the generations.

Perron’s studio was an ethereal and joyful place, full of light and beauty, and it is through Charles’ faultless technique and highly developed technical skills that he was able to translate all of this onto his canvases.

Perron exhibited widely and gained several awards, including gold at the 1928 Salon and silver at the 1937 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

Wimbledon is now in full swing, have you been watching?🎾

This fantastic painting by C. Massin will put anyone in the mood for tennis!

C. Massin is the name under which an elusive early twentieth-century artist signed a series of works depicting popular ball sports in France.

On the basis of style it is likely that Massin was closely associated with the famous cubist Andre Lhote, and studied at his academy in the early 1920s.

His depictions of tennis players share the cubist’s preoccupation with multiple perspectives and implied movement, yet Massin’s art stands out as particularly dynamic.

‘Le Chemin en Bord de Rivière’ is a brilliant example of the artist’s drive to capture more complex conditions.

Despite the season, the present landscape is far from barren, the scene enlivened by thick and staccato impasto in the path, river and house, balancing Loiseau’s quick, sweeping brushstrokes delineating the clouds across the cool autumnal sky.

A rich palette full of deep browns, bright reds, and vibrant greens play against the cool blue of an approaching winter’s sky and the light purples of the trees, each a brilliant demonstration of Loiseau’s colouristic virtuosity.

Few paintings better convey the way that Loiseau’s textures, so vibrant and complex when viewed up close, transform themselves into a magical unity as we see the work as a whole.

‘Boats at Rest’

Ronny’s focus is on maritime subjects, which is the legacy of his childhood spent growing up on the banks of the River Schelde. His fascination with the sea was engendered from a young age, sailing the tidal estuaries of the Netherlands and The Channel as a child.

Moortgat’s family would also leave an enduring legacy on the artist, as he has observed: “The reason to paint maritime subjects is probably to be found with my family roots. On my mother’s side there were quite a few river barge men and my father was involved in the shipping business.”

Trained as a technical draftsman, Ronny has since combined his own more impressionistic approach with the strictly classical.

The ability to integrate the virtuosic detail of technical drawing alongside personal style is a hallmark of the best Marine Painters.

Put in his own words: “Alongside the rather strict classical work, I do the more impressionist approach that involves loose brushstrokes. I try to create detail and atmosphere and strive to learn from other painters by looking very closely at their work and reading all about them. The process of learning never stops as borders are constantly redefined, always trying to do better but never satisfied!”

Oars at the ready the wait is almost over! The Henley Royal Regatta 2023 is only a day away with 420 boats ready to race 🚣‍♀️

Celebrated as a ‘painter of light’ Joseph Raymond Wintz (French, 1884-1956) enjoyed a reputation as one of the finest artists working in France in the early twentieth century.

He gained a firm appreciation by critics and collectors as a leading painter of light and water and was renowned for his charming window and balcony scenes, they perfectly embody memories of holidays and setting sail.

His interiors are simplistic, choosing to focus the attention on the outside world, in this case figures, row boats and sail boats bob in the sun soaked sea.

They sway in the busy fishing port as a brightly coloured sail appears in the distance, bathed in the warm sunshine of a summer’s day.

‘The Green Door, Brittany’ can be found on our website or in Knightsbridge at 5 Beauchamp Place.

“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch” These were the words of Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse.

It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event - Her Majesty’s Plate - was held there upon her request that very same year.

Here you see two celebrated equine bronze sculptures, the champion British Thoroughbred racehorse ‘Kingman (Maquette)’ and a gorgeous ‘Walking Stallion’ by leading contemporary sculptor Edward Waites. Born in Suffolk and completely self taught, Waites has dedicated himself to his crafts since leaving school and despite his young age has already earned himself international recognition and acclaim.

20/06/2023

It is the combination of Perron’s two iconic subjects; the cottage and the floral still life, that ensures ‘Les Géraniums en Bords de Fenêtre’ stands as one of the artist’s best works.

Across the surface of the painting Perron celebrates his complete mastery of shape and delicate hues, along with an inventive and subtle sense of composition.

From his studio in Nantes, Perron always strove to bring a sense of both calm and joy to his viewer; and these qualities abound in ‘Les Géraniums en Bords de Fenêtre’

While the profuse floral harmonies at the centre of the composition show Perron’s masterful ability to depict a wide range of flowers, a dense network of perfectly place brushstrokes and tiny tonal variations ensures that the multitude of Geraniums never breaks down into a confused mess of colour.

Despite the boldness of many of the pigments on show, Perron’s light touch ensures that the painting remains alive and fresh. Complementing this coloristic centre the artist has, in characteristic fashion, brilliantly captures the brightness of the sun as its shadow moves across the clean white lines of the cottage window, creating the most subtle of backdrops.

The captivating snapshot of rural French life that results in ‘Les Géraniums en Bords de Fenêtre’ is a wonderful summation of what Perron’s technical mastery could achieve.

I’ve been up at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this weekend for the set up of the show as several of my sculptures and swing seats feature in different areas. The show opens this week on Tuesday 21st September and runs until Sunday.

My sculptures can be seen in The Parsley Box Show Garden and Jardin Blanc, the official hospitality enclosure at the show hosted by Raymond Blanc OBE. Furthermore, Gladwell & Patterson will also be exhibiting several of my sculptures on their stand at the show as well.

Let me know if you’re heading up there and spot them! Will post a few of the end results when all open.

Late Afternoon, Venice by Auguste Bouvard

Bouvard’s love affair with Venice was instant and enduring. Inspired by the outstanding beauty of the city, his impressionist, warm, colourful and confident landscapes capture its unique atmosphere and charm.

In 1928, Gladwell & Patterson, the acknowledged experts of his art, held the first one-man exhibition of Bouvard’s work in Britain, from which the late Queen Mary purchased two paintings.

From the stock of BADA member Gladwell & Patterson.

Gladwell & Patterson thank you for your repeat order. It’s very much appreciated 😊
Gladwell & Patterson usually exhibit at Chelsea Flower show but for obvious reasons that’s not possible this year!
Instead they have a gallery in the fantastic grounds of The Granary, West Deeping and are open to visitors. It is all out doors and there are 20 acres so social distancing is not a problem.

Discover 'Resilience Through Colour' - the online exhibition curated by Gladwell & Patterson showcasing over 50 new works by Kenneth Webb.

Throughout Kenneth’s career, he has always been fascinated with colour, and here this exploration continues. Concerned with the changes he sees in the unique ecosystem that is the landscape of Connemara in the West Coast of Ireland, Kenneth has been called to present the landscape’s voice and tell its story through his paintings.

Connemara is a place that has enthralled and captivated Kenneth for his entire life. A life spent exploring this primal, unforgiving and raw landscape has allowed him to understand many of its nuances. He feels at one with the invisible spirit of the place and can feel its emotion. You see nature at its’ barest and most exposed here, and an acute observer of the world such as Kenneth is drawn to distinctly and individually depict these inescapable changes. The apocalyptic undertones in some of the works should provide a stark warning to us all. Our actions are changing the planet and pushing it to its limits, and it is fighting back.
