‘‘[Handel] had found means to get a little clavichord privately convey’d to a room at the top of the house. To this room he constantly stole when the family was asleep. He had made some progress before Music had been prohibited, and by his assiduous practice at the hours of rest, had made such farther advances, as, tho’ not attended to at that time, were no slight prognostics of his future greatness.’’
From Memoirs of the Life of the Late George Frederic Handel, 1760, by John Mainwaring

Click below to read Julian Perkins' interview about his latest release, Handel's Attick, inspired by Handel's late night secret music studies. Released by Deux-Elles, the recording was Instrumental Choice in the August 2023 issue of BBC Music Magazine.

The man BBC Radio 3 dubbed the "Indiana Jones of Early Music" talks about his new album of music for the clavichord - an instrument that most definitely doesn't belong in a museum.

This weekend, we are joined by recorder player Olwen Foulkes and harpsichordist Nathanial Mander in Handel's Home. They will be performing pieces by Handel, French composer Dieupart who, like Handel, spent most of his life in London and Telemann, Handel's dear longtime friend.

The pieces performed are real duets between the recorder and the harpsichord and you can hear the instruments playfully interact in different ways in each piece.

Book your tickets or simply pop-in to hear this enchanting duo.

“3 Days of Peace and Music”
Woodstock festival was a defining event of the 1960’s and music lovers gathered in masses to see the riveting performances. Jimi Hendrix was last to take the stage in the early hours of the 18th August, playing for over 2 hours. Today we celebrate his emblematic set in his “first home of his own” in Brook street.

This year marks the 300th year anniversary of Handel moving in to 25 Brook Street 🕯

‘Geo. Fredck Hendon Esq.' is the name listed on the Westminster Commissioner of Sewers rate book for 8 August 1723. He wasn’t listed as moved in in June that year so he must have moved in either in July or very early August – just before this knock at the door by the sewer assessor!

Much has changed since then, but, the occasional clatter of horse hooves passing by will transport you back to Georgian times.

The Hallelujah Project is committed to restoring the entirety of Handel's House. Katarzyna Kowalik joins us this Saturday to perform in Handel's Dining room (10:00-12:00 & 13:00-15:00): "I feel a special connection with Handel’s music while performing it in his House - listening to how the sound resonates in the room Handel rehearsed himself, while looking through the same window, it gives me goose bumps!"

On Sunday (13:00-15:00), Callum Anderson and Emma Jüngling will be performing a selection of pieces that will include opera, oratorio and harpsichord solo. They will explore some of the genre's most loved pieces such as Bach's 'Erbarme dich' from St Matthew Passion, Handel's Dixit Dominus and Vivaldi's Gloria. We will also perform arias from two of Handel's operas, Alcina and Xerxes.

Out today!

This album celebrates the delicacy and intimacy of the clavichord. The title is inspired by the story that Handel’s early biographer John Mainwaring tells, about the young Handel secretly going up to the attic during the night to practise on the clavichord, in defiance of his father. The pieces in the first half are by some of those composers mentioned in a notebook of 1698, now lost, which Handel used while he was studying in Halle with Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow. The second half includes pieces Handel might have played on such an instrument to himself later in life, for relaxation and maybe even solace, away from the demands and intrigues of his frantic public life.

"And all the people rejoiced, and said: God save the King! Long live the King!”

Handel wrote four anthems in the drawing room of his house in Brook Street for the Coronation of George II in October 1727. Zadok the Priest has been used for every coronation since and we are so thrilled to be hearing it as part of the King’s coronation today.

As Prince of Wales, His Majesty King Charles III was Patron of the Hallelujah Project to restore Handel’s house.

All at Handel & Hendrix in London send every good wish to HM The King and HM The Queen Consort.

About us

In a single street in London, separated by a wall, are the homes of two of history’s most significant musical artists: George Frideric Handel & Jimi Hendrix.

25 Brook Street is the house that belonged to Handel and the place where he composed some of the world’s most enduring Baroque music such as Zadok the Priest, Music for the Royal Fireworks and Messiah. Visit the rooms where he ate, slept, rehearsed and entertained in a modest mid-terraced house for the last 36 years of his life and understand the man behind these incredible works.

The top floor of 23 Brook Street is the flat where Jimi Hendrix lived with his girlfriend, record player and guitar from 1968-69. Step back in time to 60s London and visit the room where he slept, partied, worked and relaxed. Come and see Hendrix’s only recognized home in the world.

See them together under one roof at Handel & Hendrix in London. Find out more - https://handelhendrix.org/

Happy Birthday, Handel House!
Really excited to have been commissioned to create a site-specific artwork for The Worcester Plinth. The installation, titled 'Hendrix in Worcester', will pay homage to Jimi Hendrix’s four number gig at The Gaumont in Worcester on 2nd April 1967 - just 2 months before his iconic guitar burning performance at the The Monterey Pop Festival.

The artwork will be unveiled on 27th November - what would have been the guitarist’s 80th birthday. It will build on my 'Hendrix in London' mural - commissioned last year by Handel & Hendrix in London for the facade of Jimi’s former Mayfair home.

Reigniting the Spark – back in touch with Elliott Morris

Recently I caught up with WriteWyattUK, who I first met after he reviewed me at a Preston show. Later he interviewed me for the article ‘Introducing The Islandman’.

This time we chatted about home recording the new album, writing and collaborating during lockdown , making music with the charity Live Music Now, playing in Jimi Hendrix ’s flat Handel & Hendrix in London , supporting Paul Carrack , shows at The Pentre Arms Llangrannog , Wales and The Stein Inn on Skye…and getting back to playing live once again!

Malc is a wonderfully knowledgeable, thorough interviewer - and quite simply a joy to chat music with! Cheers again Malc!
