Happy Australia Day! Although Patricia Piccinini's show has come to an end at 103 New Bond St, the Australian artist is currently on show at our New York gallery in the group exhibition 'How to Tell the Future from the Past.'

The role of progress is central to the concept of civilisation but its essence as a movement toward a goal has, at least in the context of postmodernity, come to be understood as a fallacy.

Uwe Wittwer: In The Middle Distance | Abbot Hall Art Gallery

Uwe Wittwer's solo show at Abbot Hall Art Gallery opens tonight.

‘We’re absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to be working with Uwe Wittwer on this selection of stunning, haunting images that has been tailor-made to fit the historic interiors of Abbot Hall. The exhibition is ambitious in the scope and breadth of its vision, but the works are unified by the power of Wittwer’s imagination and his supreme skills as a painter and image-maker. The show will operate on so many levels, both visually and intellectually, and promises to be spectacular.’

Nick Rogers, Curator, Lakeland Arts Trust.

The exhibition will run until 16 March 2013.

Abbot Hall Art Gallery’s first exhibition of 2013 showcases the dazzling images of Zurich-based artist Uwe Wittwer (b.1954). It is an exciting departure for Abbot Hall to be exhibiting the work of a Swiss painter whose brilliantly executed oils, watercolours and large-scale prints explore complex th...

On the 1st February, Haunch of Venison will open its third solo show with the US artist Thomas Joshua Cooper at 51 Eastcastle St.

The artist has travelled to some of the most isolated and far-flung locations across the globe for the past 30 years, in order to create images using his 100 year-old Agfa camera and specially made photographic plates. Through an attention to the resonances of place, each work demands patient attention by the viewer to the contour and context of landscape, in its overwhelming natural similitude, and inevitable emplaced particularity.

Here's a preview of one of the artist's extraordinary photographs.

Haunch of Venison

On the 8th February, Haunch of Venison will open its first solo show with New York based artist José Parlá at 103 New Bond St.

Parlá’s vibrant works explore the multi-layered histories of cities and urban environments; his paintings and site-specific installations are created both in his large carriage house studio and also works outside throughout city surfaces.

His expressive painting style and layers of ephemera and found objects combined with calligraphic abstraction have a lyrical feel to them, are uniquely his. This exhibition presents new paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculptures throughout our three gallery spaces.
