When exploring famous artworks with children we try to avoid making them just COPY the artwork on a piece of paper.
Even though it's a good observational practice we prefer to offer them instead a whole experience around the subject that inspired the artist, in this case we immersed ourselves into a flowery universe inspired by #georgiaokeeffe

What a wonderful experience was to design this temporary play installation for under 5's a few months ago for #medialabprado
Based on a theme [VOLUME] we were given absolute creative freedom to generate a playful environment where under 5's and their families could explore safely different materials.
Inspired by various contemporary artists we came up with different sensory areas for the kids to explore.

Art has a lot to offer, appart from the obvious beauty of these artworks children (and adult carers) learnt about optical effects and how our brain and eyesight work, we learnt about mathematical patterns and symmetry, about colour mixing and monochromatic artworks.
What a gift is to have artists working around the world letting us learn all these interesting facts with just an artwork.

Today we had a special guest at Art Explorers club, the abstract painter @anitakutsarovaart spend the whole day with the kids showing them different techniques and talking with themabout her work and what it is like to be an artist.
Another wonderful day. Thanks everyone for joining in.

Yesterday at the National Gallery we learnt about bubbles in Art and today it was time to explore what we learnt!
We made loads of experiments with bubbles including this one (look at the beautiful colours and patterns of the bubble!). These activities are carefully planned to engage children and invite them to observe the subtle beauty of the experiment. They don't realise how much they're learning about Art just with this activity, it's a whole aesthetic experience! (forget about paint and cards, this is the ART children should be learning at school)
more fun tomorrow! (we are going to Tate Modern, last two places available at the Shadwell club)

I know, I know...it took us way too long to publish this programme, but hey! here it is, as always full of fun and engaging adventures in museums for children 6 to 12 years old.
Last week of summer camp we went to the Thames foreshore to discover some of the historic treasures left by the river. Ceramic bits from victorian times, sailor pipes, seaglass, tiles from roman times, old buttons...and yes, some not-so-old chicken bones from the nearby fried chicken shop. It's always good fun to go Mudlarking!
Thank you to all our little friends that tagged along that day and thank you as well to Tideway for showing us what they're doing to clean up our river.
BTW bookings are now open for october half term and even though the programme is still not out some days are already...fully booked! WOW.
The summer camp is about to end andwe can't help but to be a bit sad...
.
.
.
it's been a long, sunny and wonderful summer. We've been fully booked almost everyday and we got to see some old little friends that only join us during summer.
.
.
.
We felt that a good #mudlarking session would be a good way to wrap up this wonderful #summer2019 so this morning we went to the #Thames foreshore to find some antiques...and my gosh we were lucky! Old sailors pipes, bits of victorian, tudor and roman ceramics, 100 year old oyster shells, seaglass...
Everyone was very excited about their findings! @ River Thames

Some pics from today's trip to #OlafurEliasson exhibition at #tatemodern where kids got to see some of his most famous works.
It was so much fun seeing them all excited to go into the next room to see more and more artworks. They were really inspired by his playful and interactive work and tomorrow at base camp we will spend the whole day experimenting with lights, prisms, colours, water...we'll share some of our art-ventures through stories!
Last week of #summercamp starts tomorrow and we have loads of creative surprises for our #artexplorers
We'll start the week with a trip to #OlafurEliasson 's exhibition at #TateModern followed by a whole day of activities to explore light and all its different waves (✨wait and see our stories on wednesday!) Yesterday we visited the #Manga exhibition at the #britishmuseum and learnt quite a lot.
Children loved this huge fake libraryin the middle of the exhibition where you could take any manga book and read it for as long as you wished.
They dressed up as Pikachu, Totoro, Goku and other manga characters and learn t the basics on how to draw Manga.
It was a good day.
Thank you to our fabulous teachers Jose, Tessa, Maria and Susana that made this day another great art-venture for the kids!

Wonderful time today at @saatchi_gallery with the group of #artexplorers. We visited the Sweet Harmony exhibition where we got to learn how people from the 80's and 90's used to throw massive parties called #Raves where all sorts of crazy stuff happened.
When these parties were banned people used abandoned warehouses, barns or even farm fields to #rave all night long.
This short trip to the not-so-distant past was enjoyable and mesmerising.
We took the #artexplorers to the neon paradise in #walthamstow last friday to learn about how neonlights are made. We were exploring the works of different contemporary artists working with this very fragile and handcrafted material.
It was so interesting to learn how the different noble gases inside the glass tubes create different colours and how the glass is bent by hand to create the all sorts of shapes.
If you haven't been to God's Own Junkyard write it down onto your 'places to visit' list, we cannot recommend this place highy enough.

5 tips for visiting Art museums with young children:
• Always eat something first
• Plan a short visit, 30 minutes maximum for children up to 5 years old and 45 minutes for children up to 11(attentiom spans vary from one child to another but this timings apply for the majority of the cases)
• Make it a game, try to find textures, shapes or colours with the small ones. For 5+ you can start introducing more complicated subjects. Incenting the story of differmt characters, trying to find out about their lifes is always a hit and allows children to pay attention to small details, emotions...
• storytelling is always the best way to discover an Art museum. Engaging children with a story that develops along the galleries keeps them interested for longer. Museums often offer free resources to prepare your visit in advance, if you visit a museum without planning it in advance, no worries! improvise, invent...it doesn't matter if you are accurate or not the mostbimportant thing is to make museums places where children like to spend time in.
• Ask questions and listen to the answers. Art can be a great way to start a dialog about different subjects. Ask questions like 'what do you see' 'why do you think the artist used this colours' you don't need to know the answer yourself but to open that dialog will make you all think about the artwork, empathise with each others feelings and develop listening skills.

It doesn't matter what is she telling, every story catches them! Not sure if its that cute spanish accent or the lock of grey hair that gives her some kind of superpowers...the thing is that we have here at Lemon one of the most talented storytellers ever, turning any boring museum in a place worth exploring. Thank you Susana!

Keeping the balance of all elements is quite tricky!
Lemon ArtLab was founded in 2013 as a place to learn about Art in a different and creative way and has grown to be a successful Art club in different locations in East London. We provide high quality Art sessions where we teach about great artists and encourage children to discover the secrets behind some of the most famous artworks. We’re a small but passionate team, we love what we do and that is what makes this project so special.
Back in 2015 we launched our first Art Explorers summer camp in Wapping, East London with a small group of kids, three brave Art teachers and a tight budget for Art materials. We managed to create awesome artworks and to make unforgettable visits to various Art museums. The experience was so meaningful and fun for both teachers and children that we decided to keep running every school holiday.
Today, more than 250 children have passed by our holiday Art camp and 90% of them join again every half term. We are a very small Art project, we open places for only 12 children each day to be able to spend time with each kid and to personalise the experience. At this camp, kids will learn a lot about Art, exploring famous artworks and creating their own ones but they will also be able to put into practice their skills, make new friends and explore London in a unique an child-friendly way.
We are a child-led camp, that means that we let children make their own decisions and take risks, they are free to join the activities they are interested in or spend the whole day exploring at their own path. We have a no-screen policy and we usually don’t allow toys at the camp, so kids end up playing using their imagination or creating toys with the materials provided (natural materials such rocks, leaves, sticks and Art materials like clay, string, tape, paper, staples…) Teachers propose ideas and share the plan for the day trip at the start of the day, children add their own ideas as well, together we create the schedule for the day.
When visiting Art museums with children we encourage them to question what they see using games, crafts and treasure hunts, we let them express themselves using Art materials creatively after getting inspiration from famous artists. We want them to think by themselves, to be able to express ideas through Art and, most important of all, to empathise with artworks made by others.
We don’t want them to copy what they see but to create a personal response. This is a difficult and long process that we, LEMON teachers, tackle with enthusiasm every school holiday, sometimes we fail and children are not interested at all, sometimes we get a fabulous response. We know this work we do with the kids will only be recognized in the long run but we’re sure it’s worth it.
Lemon has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In Lemon ArtLab we share our passion about Art in a fun, engaging way with loads of hands on projects and child led fun activities during school holidays.
All our activities are in English but we also offer options in Spanish conscious of the lack of fun family activities in this language in London just get in [email protected]
