August was a busy month for the Youth Programme at the Geffrye Museum! First up was Twitter Takeover Day (have a look at some of our tweets on the Geffrye Youth account here: http://bit.ly/2c5Chv8). Next, young people from four different groups descended on the Museum for three days of fun activities based around 'Home' themes. Finally, the Youth Advisory Panel popped in the week after to have their photographs taken with real museum objects, and receive Dementia Awareness training and learn about accessibility at the Geffrye.

This Friday, the Geffrye Museum will be taking part in Teen Twitter Takeover Day, an initiative from Kids in Museums to get young people taking over the Twitter accounts of museums to share their voice! Young people at the Geffrye will be sharing behind-the-scenes insight throughout the day on the museum's Twitter (and Instagram!) and on the Youth Twitter. Follow the action across the country using the hashtag #takeoverday!

Members of the Youth Advisory Panel are being trained to run our Handling Station, using real objects from the Geffrye Museum's Handling Collection. On Saturday, educator Janine Marsh delivered a whole day of confidence-building training in presenting to the public. The YAP researched the objects and built their own stories around their histories, before presenting to each other. A great day all round!

Last night at the Friends of the Geffrye Museum summer party, two of our Young Consultants helped the Handling Station make its debut! Lizzie and Eileen were on hand to talk about interesting objects from our handling collection, from an 1850s chamberstick to our Ewbank carpet sweeper.

Our monthly Youth Advisory Panel meeting is tonight from 5-7pm! We'll be talking about Takeover Day, the new youth blog, and social media.

Yesterday, young people from Mouth That Roars spent the afternoon in the period rooms, filming in costume for the TEA project. This project explores the huge impact that tea has had on the global economy and culture; the Geffrye Museum was the perfect place for the young people to look at the social aspects of tea drinking throughout history. We're very excited to see the finished film!

On Monday, we held our monthly Youth Advisory Panel meeting - we discussed the next #Takeoverday, supporting the Unlocking the Geffrye project, and thought about our favourite parts of the Museum gardens. We also chose our favourite three images taken by visitors to the museum to post over on the Geffrye Museum's Instagram - follow for more images from the YAP in future! https://www.instagram.com/geffryemuseum/

The Young People's Programme had a busy weekend! Saturday saw the Youth Advisory Panel visit the Brooklands Museum to meet their Youth Panel, look at antique cars and experience the Concorde simulation. On Sunday, young people from Mouth That Roars joined older people from Contact the Elderly for an intergenerational tea party, making interviews about the meaning tea holds for us. A great couple of days!

The Steering Group’s LAST (15th) meeting… Update from everyone! http://wp.me/p3YvAU-6u

The Centenary Celebrations Steering Group had their 15th meeting on the 1st of October - sadly, the final meeting for the group. It's been a fantastic 15 months, and the Steering Group have been fantastic representatives of local Hackney and London young people and youth groups in co-curating an exhibition, web resources like this blog and the Centenary Celebrations interactive timeline and designing and supporting themed events in the aim of re-interpreting the stories behind the Geffrye almshouse and museum walls for today's visitors. Fab photos and comments from Eastside Educational Trust... Of a great event - so excited to see all the young artists seeing their work up and exhibited!

It was fantastic to be at the Geffrye Museum last night for a launch event hosted by young people from the Project Steering Group, of the Centenary Celebrations youth heritage project. We were proud to have been a part of the project and to have worked with young people from Hackney Ark on some of the images uncovering the rich history of the Geffrye Museum. The exhibition is in the gardens until 4 January 2015 - so why not take a look? http://www.geffrye-museum.org.uk/visiting/ Thanks to The Geffrye Young People's Page
