Willesden Jewish Cemetery

An amazing achievement.

Willesden Jewish Cemetery has been a prestigious burial ground for London’s Jewish community since 1873. Thanks to investment by the National Lottery, the United Synagogue is opening up the cemetery for the wider public to discover and explore.

Good news . . .

We’re very pleased to announce that we are now able to expand our reading room services and increase our capacity, so that we can accommodate more visitors & give them greater access to our collections.

From Tuesday 25 August we will be opening up our map and large document reading room, as well as increasing the number of seats available in our document reading room. Visitors will be able to order more documents each day, and we will have some two-day appointments available for bulk document orders.

All visitors must still book their visit and order their documents in advance – bookings for 25-28 August will be available from next Monday at 10am.

We’re also pleased to announce that we have restarted our naturalisation certificates (HO 334) service, although other record copying and paid search services remain suspended for the time being.

More details available on our website: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/news/coronavirus-update/

So good to see things opening up. Well, done, SoG (Society of Genealogists).

Mr Pink, a local Lewisham legend . . .

In our newsletter we recently shared the story of Mr Brenton Pink, a South London horticultural hero. This film by Helena Appio celebrates, for posterity, the jewel-hued house and garden that Mr Pink created on Loampit Hill, a garden which made a piece of Jamaica in Lewisham.

Read more about Mr Pink’s garden, and our ongoing project to record the Caribbean horticultural heritage of south London, in an article by Garden Museum Director Christopher Woodward - https://bit.ly/2ZUiOH3

Many thanks to Helena Appio for allowing us to share this wonderful film!

CAN YOU HELP?

We're looking for family of Cpl William Lionel Court who was killed in action on 8 August 1918 while serving in France with 19th (Queen Alexander's Own Royal) Hussars. He was born in 1886 in Pancras, London, son of William Court and Esther Lawrence. He had 3 brothers (Alfred, Percy & Archibald) and a sister, Clara. We know brother Alfred married Susannah Steward and had 3 children (Susie, Alfred and George), all of whom married and had children of their own in the 1930s. It's this generation or their descendents we're looking for. If you know of anybody who might be related, please message us or email [email protected]. Thank you so much.

Trove unveils its next chapter

The National Library of Australia has secured funding to expand its offering on Trove. Good news as I seem to recall funding was in question before current crisis. Such a fantastic resource and it's free!

'The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought the way we access information into sharp focus. Trove has proven to be invaluable to its visitors now more than ever, providing trusted information and welcome diversion during a moment in history when it’s never been more important to have insights and discovery at your fingertips,’ . . .

‘We are delighted with the announcement by the Federal Government today that it will provide an additional $8 million in funding over the next two years to support the ongoing development of Trove,’ https://trove.nla.gov.au/announcement/2020/06/26/trove-unveils-its-next-chapter

Trove, Australia’s online treasure chest of cultural and historical wonders, turned the page to its next chapter today. ‘Trove brings together voices and stories from every corner of the country and provides free access to those resources - to everyone, wherever they are. With a new design and i...
