British Punk on Paper The Mott Collection is a compelling portrait of a particular moment in British popular culture, at the bitter end of the post-war period.
It tells its story through a unique collection of several hundred posters, flyers and other ephemera assembled by artist and erstwhile punk, Toby Mott. With the passion of a true fan and an artist’s eye for an image, he has gathered the evidence of the short life and premature, messy end of British Punk. There are iconic images by artists such as Jamie Reid and Linder Sterling, as well as flyers, gig posters, and zines, crudely cut and pasted by anonymous hands. A fascinating collection of political material supplies further context of a nation of unrest, torn by extremism, recording attempts by political extremes of both left and right to co-opt the power of youth. Ephemeral and throwaway as each of these objects were, collected together they tell, in uniquely immediate and visual terms, a part of the history of Britain, the history of ideas, and the history of art. Punk has always exerted a fascination, but perhaps never stronger than at this moment. The legacy of punk has permeated modern culture and society, and its visual vocabulary infuses much contemporary art, while the punk spirit resonates in particular with the anti-elitist, DIY ethos of today’s young, blogging artists and musicians. This exhibition recalls the anarchic spirit of authenticity and amateurism, the volatile and ambiguous celebration of negativity, creativity, violence and protest that was Punk.

DICTATOR BANKNOTES
NEW BOOK SHIPPING FOR XMAS
Dictator Banknotes, a new publication by Toby Mott. A curation of Mott’s fascination with the darkness of power, absolute power in particular. The publication is designed as an album and contains 16 real dictator banknotes with text for each dictator alongside anecdotes of their barbarity and/or humorous notes on their colourful lives.
Mott's presentation of these dictators opens a dialogue regarding identification with these flawed individuals and their bygone humanity.
Dictators featured in the publication: Sultan of Brunei, Chairman Mao, Papa Doc, Suharto, Shah of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, Saddam Hussein, Colonel Gaddafi, Genghis Khan, Samora Machel, Kim Il-Sung, King Fahd, Bashar al-Assad, Niyazov, Idi Amin, Tito.
Exclusive first edition of 50, signed by the author.

Grey Organisation 1983-1991
Video Here https://youtu.be/E7zjbq55DVg
The Grey Organisation was an art collective of four young artists working in London and New York between 1983 and 1991 who, through their many projects, both gave pleasure and antagonised people – the antagonisms sometimes exceeding the pleasures. By systematically throwing large quantities of grey paint on every single gallery front in London’s then art centre, Cork Street, the Grey Organisation did not endear themselves to the art world. The consequence has been that the art world, enjoying a tight grip on its own history, has punished the Grey Organisation for its excesses by denying it historical attention – at least, so far.
Art writer Neal Brown reads aloud from his essay as published in Grey Organisation: Cork Street (Richardson, 2019).
Grey Organisation 1983-1991 samples a selection of documentary material from the Grey Organisation archive held by The Mott Collection in London. Represented are projects, ephemera, and events created by the art collective, indicating the great breadth and variety of their creative endeavour between 1983-1991.

VIOLENCE GROWS:
Cosey Fanni Tutti, Honey Bane, Margaret Thatcher, Vi Subversa a new publication by Toby Mott available now
Violence Grows is a forceful, wide-ranging look at four iconoclastic female icons of the 1980’s. A four phase journey, focusing on three punk artists and one divisive politician. All four re-shaped antiquated ideas on identity, sexuality and the role of woman in a dysfunctional society. These four determined women set out to overturn the world they lived in.
The confrontational content of Violence Grows examines a patriarchal elitist system and how culture can subvert it. Presenting material from the archive of The Mott Collection a counter-cultural archive of these transgressive women of the 1980’s with a pointed political edge.
This empowering collection of galvanising ephemera highlights the political and social troubles of the past whilst illuminating the times we’re living through right now.
Violence Grows is four image-based publications, one dedicated to each subject; Margaret Thatcher, Honey Bane, Cosey Fanni Tutti and Vi Subversa. One A3 poster and a vintage sheet of Margaret Thatcher toilet paper all housed in a sticker embellished mailer box.

GREY ORGANISATION: CORK STREET
TOBY MOTT
Grey Organisation was an artist collective founded in London between 1983 and 1991. The GO showed in London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo working in mediums of painting, sculpture, film and video. Most infamously, the GO staged an “art terrorist action,” vandalizing the establishment art galleries on Cork St in central London with buckets of grey paint in protest at the galleries’ lack of support for emerging artists.

The Grey Organisation arts collective based in London and NY were active from 1983 -1990. The GO worked in various mediums including film and video. Their early films were shown at institutions such as the London Film-Makers' Co-op, the Tate, and the ICA who at that time were engaged in showing much of the new video and film being made in the UK.
The GO later film and video works were carried by Printed Matter in NY and their commercial work broadcast on the music cable channel MTV.

A large gathering of the Grey Organisation and affiliates on 14th August 1986 gathered on The Mall London with a re-enactment of
Neville Chamberlain showing the Anglo-German Declaration to a crowd at Heston Aerodrome on 30 September 1938 where he stated, "I have returned from Germany with peace for our time.

Toby Mott’s paintings – not dissimilar to religious icons – combine a debased, trash-punk aesthetic with the status symbols of the high fine arts. Mott uses superlative materials, such as gold and silver, in combination with some subverted high craft skills, lots of art historical awareness, and all signed off with the authenticity of the artist’s signature – although on close inspection we see that Mott’s signature is not hand written, but crudely stencilled.
