Cultural Traffic and The Mott Collection

Cultural Traffic and The Mott Collection British Punk on Paper

The Mott Collection is a compelling portrait of a particular moment in British popular culture, at the bitter end of the post-war period. It tells its story through a unique collection of several hundred posters, flyers and other ephemera assembled by artist and erstwhile punk, Toby Mott. With the passion of a true fan and an artist’s eye for an image, he has gathered the evidence of the short life and premature, messy end of British Punk. There are iconic images by artists such as Jamie Reid and Linder Sterling, as well as flyers, gig posters, and zines, crudely cut and pasted by anonymous hands. A fascinating collection of political material supplies further context of a nation of unrest, torn by extremism, recording attempts by political extremes of both left and right to co-opt the power of youth. Ephemeral and throwaway as each of these objects were, collected together they tell, in uniquely immediate and visual terms, a part of the history of Britain, the history of ideas, and the history of art. Punk has always exerted a fascination, but perhaps never stronger than at this moment. The legacy of punk has permeated modern culture and society, and its visual vocabulary infuses much contemporary art, while the punk spirit resonates in particular with the anti-elitist, DIY ethos of today’s young, blogging artists and musicians. This exhibition recalls the anarchic spirit of authenticity and amateurism, the volatile and ambiguous celebration of negativity, creativity, violence and protest that was Punk.

Cultural Traffic is a fair for dealers in counterculture and independent producers to trade books, zines, prints, catalogues, vinyls and tapes in both current and obsolete format. By bringing together pioneering contemporary publishing with vintage counterculture and out-of-print material, Cultural Traffic paves an express connection between yesterday’s cultural artefacts and the latent collectables of tomorrow. Open and free for all to visit, Cultural Traffic offers an opportunity to engage in the past, present and future of counterculture. It is a market for the culturally inquisitive which showcases a unique perspective on counterculture’s pre-internet roots. Cultural Traffic is an ongoing exploration into the flourishing post-digital zine scene. Mission Cultural Traffic is driven by the punk ethic of self publishing, where vintage DIY counterculture meets current progressive discourse. Cultural Traffic presents an exciting dynamic marketplace for the global resurgence that is happening in self publishing now. This movement is at the forefront of today’s critical voices, embracing the power of print as a catalyst for social change and a platform for expression and diversity. There is material at entry level affordability giving collectors the opportunity to engage with current social issues outside the financial restraints of the elitist gallery system. Cultural Traffic is not just an arts fair for paper, but a celebration of ideas and expression. Cultural Traffic paves the way for exposure and engagement in radical print now.

@richardsonworld
The Grey Organisation, an artist collective founded in London between 1983 and 1991. The GO showed in London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo, collaborated with Gilbert and George, Derek Jarman and ‪Throbbing Gristle‬. Working in multi disciplines of painting, sculpture, film and video. Most infamously, the GO staged an “art terrorist action,” vandalizing the establishment art galleries on Cork St. in central London with buckets of grey paint in protest of the galleries lack of support for emerging artists.
Richardson collaborated with the Grey Organisation archive for an upcoming book about the Cork St. attack, which will be available later this month. Grey Organisation x Richardson - Alive and Awake T-shirt and Longsleeve now available in-store: NY|LA and online at Richardsonshop.com #GreyOrganisation #AliveAndAwake #WearRichardson
