Morris Wald worked with Edward Rayne to create the bag that went with the shoes that the late Queen Elizabeth wore.

👛👜H Wald & Co manufactured beautiful handbags which carried both the Waldybag and the Rayne logos. Collabs have been going a long time!

Waldybag is Waldyblushing and very happy for the mention. Quality is timeless.

The padded frame on this gold lame design is a sensory pleasure!

For collectors, dealers and historians: The Waldy label is part of the Waldybag brand. While Waldybag handbags were designed and made in Britain at the H Wald & Co factory, the Waldy line was a diffusion collection: British designed and Italian made.

🗺️🌎I love how what goes around sometimes comes around…

🗓️ Long ago, in the early part of the 20th century, Grandpa Harry Wald made the journey with his wife Salome, and three young children, Esther, Ida and Morris, from Poland to Britain.

🇧🇪 En route, they spent some months or possibly years living with cousins who had settled in Antwerp (Belgium) at 1 Rue du Scorpion.

🚗 One hour’s drive from that address (Google Directions informs me), Bags: Inside Out is on at the Hasselt Fashion Museum.

👜 Apparently Antwerp was also a fertile home for handbag frames early in the 20th century… if anyone can help on that bit of research, would love to know more!

🌏 Where in the world is Waldybag now?

🇨🇳 The Bags: Inside Out exhibition has been drawing the crowds (lockdowns permitting) in China, from Beijing in April-June to Shanghai in July/Aug, then Guangzhou in September. It draws to a close in Chengdu on 23 November.

🤩👜 Incredible to think of Waldybag’s beautiful work travelling so far and the name becoming known to a new audience.

🇧🇪 And after November? Well… I’ll be posting about that very soon. Let’s just say if you are anywhere near Belgium, you’re in luck!! ❤️❤️

🌅🧡Who loves Art Deco?

👧🏻 I grew up in a house with tons of Art Deco motifs – the house was designed in the early 30s and and everything from the lighting, fireplaces, wood panelling to the tiling in the bathroom, effused the era. It shaped my aesthetic leanings and shall forever love it…

🤩 So imagine my joy at unwrapping this most elegant of black suede Waldybags, which Dad seems to have designed later than the Art Deco era, but which displays so many beautiful elements of the style.

❓So much so, I wonder whether it’s a revival design from the 1930s.

❤️👜Totally in love with it. I hope you are, too.

👜 A friend just sent me this image of four Art Deco handbags.

👀 Of all of them, it’s the bottom right one that catches my attention. The green onyx or Bakelite Scottie reminds me so much of this design by my grandfather, Harry Wald, seen in the ledger of H Wald & Co from 1936/7.

🐕‍🦺 See the Scottie dog heads on either side? It helps me understand how the construction of these bags might have worked as well. These figure often in Art Deco design with their jaunty walk and appropriately angular heads. Full of character!

🙏🏼 Am waiting to hear if the person who posted these handbags, knows any more about who designed them!

👀🔍 A close up on a remarkable Waldybag, owned by textile artist

💬👜 🎨 I chatted with Aiveen at her showroom recently about this very unusual hand-painted clutch bag and the design influences at play.

🇮🇳🪷 Is it the earliest example of a Florence Campbell? I think there are reasons to to think so.

⁉️ Florence’s great niece, Peggy isn’t sure… which leads to another question… if not Florence, then who?

💐 A quartet of outstanding hand-painted Waldybags, as displayed by jewellery design house Butler & Wilson.

🖋 Simon Wilson, in his blog, writes about Waldybag as a notable brand, synonymous with 'English luxury'. I love that pairing of words: it speaks of heritage, skills, refinement, and glamour.

💃 🩰 👼These evening bags are not shy – they are trumpeting angels, sweeping staircases, swirling dances – and made to cherish. Painted by Florence Campbell who worked for H Wald & Co for so many years post-WW2, the two in the background are very familiar to me with their tulips and roses. The two in the foreground – well… wow! These are new to me. This shouldn't be a surprise, however, as the majority of these hand-painted handbags were made to order, with personalised elements for the intended owner, making them truly unique.

👝 👛💍 The painted frame and clasp of the black satin bag on the right, are so bold and delicate at the same time. The dainty box bag on the left, with its white tracery and almost veiled rose bouquet motifs, a bridal dream.

🎨 If you are lucky enough to own one of these evening bags, you may also have very special hand-painted accessories: a powder compact, lipstick holder and cigarette case (we'll call it a business card holder now…). The cases were supplied by the gifting company Stratton, for Florence to paint, perfect miniatures of the bags themselves.

😍 I could look at these all day…

With such sadness, we say farewell to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

Her grace, devotion to duty, energy, dignity, and endless diplomacy in an ever-more complicated world, will be marked as unique among leaders, let alone sovereigns. The closure of an era, and a legacy that we may well cling to for our own stability.

Here, some pages from a magazine I edited for Woman’s Weekly to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday six years ago, which capture her through the decades, always with that sparkling smile.

Also, a photograph on her first Commonwealth tour as Queen, when H Wald & Co was honoured to have her custom. Seventy years on, such a precious connection makes the loss feel tangible and touching. How many millions of people across the world have their own personal link to the late Queen, from children presenting posies to ambassadors presenting credentials.

May she rest in peace and her memory be a blessing.

Long live the King 🇬🇧

👜🇬🇧Lots of handbags going viral yesterday

1️⃣ 🐻 🥪The Queen’s delightful skit with Paddington Bear, when she revealed she carries a marmalade sandwich in hers, ‘for later’. 😉

2️⃣ 👜The handbag fashioned from drones, rising up above Buckingham Palace. For handbags to be an icon of the Queen’s identity - I’ll drink to that! 🥂

3️⃣ 👜 Gerald Bodmer, MD of Launer, talking about the handbag brand the Queen favours. There’s a mobile phone holder inside their handbags. Waldybags had fittings to hold a lipstick and powder compact, along with a dainty purse for coins.

🤔👜 What fittings do you want in a handbag these days?

4️⃣ 👀 👜 Little Princess Charlotte taking a peek inside Camilla’s handbag on Day 1 of the Jubilee celebrations. I loved looking in my mum’s handbag, it was a grown-up world: diary, shopping lists, receipts, a pill box, make-up, keys, mints. Now I’ve prompted a little reverie for myself ☺️.

👑🇬🇧 The Queen Mother on the day her daughter was crowned Queen, here with grandchildren Charles and Anne.

🌸❤️👜 The Queen Mother holds a highly-decorated handbag. When I met Peggy Wood, the great niece of Florence Campbell, who executed the first hand-painted designs for Waldybag, she told me the following: that the Queen Mother had a Waldybag for the Coronation, and to keep young Prince Charles entertained, she carried some sweets in it for him. At one point, some tumbled out and Charles could be seen bending down to gather them up. Is this the handbag?

👑💂‍♂️🎉 Recalling my first clear memory of Royal pageantry – the Silver Jubilee. I was so thrilled to receive this wonderful Waldybag souvenir of that event…

💟🖌Yes, a silver Forget-me-not. They were usually a gilt colour. The box, too, employs silver text and patterning, while the royal purple lining was also a departure from the regular crimson. I love the flow of the design, not dissimilar to this year's logo for the platinum jubilee.

👑💜‘The Queen looked exquisite. She was wearing a dress of white satin… encrusted with jewelled embroidery in a floral design…’

🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🥁🌸 A Jubilee parade for you of some of my favourite 1950s Waldybags, a decade which saw the arrival of the hand-painted floral-themed handbags. Brocade and satin also seem to capture the glamour of the 1950s.

📸 Photographed against the pages of a precious 69-year-old souvenir edition of Illustrated magazine. The images are astonishing in what they reveal of the grandeur surrounding the Queen and how the city was decorated. I also love the adverts which flag-waved alongside the population.

🏆🥇My mum kept this copy carefully and like the Queen - and a Waldybag - it’s given good service!

Hong Kong will be re-scheduled to follow so watch this space for news if you're in the vicinity.

👑 Happy anniversary, Your Majesty.

🎂 On the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne, I present this design for a hand painted handbag with a coronation theme.

👀👑🏵 You can see the monarch’s crown, the orb and sceptre, other royal signifiers, including ermine edging that echoes the robes of the monarch.

❓🤔 Was this design ever made up for the coronation? Waldybag hand-painted artist, Peggy Wood does not have the the Perspex sheet that would normally accompany a paper tracing though perhaps it lies with ?

📷 Now Waldybag made handbags for the Queen and Princess Margaret - there was a photograph in the H Wald & Co showroom of the royal sisters wearing their Waldybags and I am on the hunt for said photograph.

🤩 My next move on this design? Back in touch with the Palace I think!

It was my great pleasure to invite Peggy Wood, one of the artists who painted the beautiful beaded evening handbags for H Wald & Co, to Bags: Inside Out at the Victoria and Albert Museum. See some of our conversation in the video below.

Together we discussed the special hand-painting process that she, her mother Joan Ashley-Biggs, and great aunt Florence Campbell were so accomplished in, and some of the details about how the bags were produced.

Plus some amazing information about Florence's life. More to come on that! What a special afternoon!

👜❓ Who is ‘SR'?

🤔 🕰 🕵️‍♀️Ever since I saw this intriguing gas mask Waldybag at Bags: Inside Out, I’ve been hunting for the answer as to who ‘SR’ was. Finally, it was provided by Adrian Kerrison, a curator at the Imperial War Museum London London, which loaned the bag. And boy, was it worth waiting for.

👷🏻‍♀️👩‍🏫Introducing… Stella, Marchioness of Reading (1894 -1971), who at the start of World War II, was invited to set up the Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS), an organisation that gave critical support to the Air Raids Precaution Unit (ARP) and to the civilian population. By 1941, the WVS numbered one million women.

🍽🧸The WVS taught households air-raid procedures, fed the bombed-out with meals made in makeshift canteens, and played a vital role in the evacuation of a million children from Britain's towns to the country. WVS members were trained to aim anti-aircraft guns (though only men were allowed to fire them) and were a comforting source of ‘tea and sympathy' to a war-torn nation. Stella Reading's understanding could be summed up in this quote from her: 'Always have food for bombed-out people that is easy to eat. The first thing people lose is their spectacles, and the second their teeth.'

🇹🇷🇮🇳🇬🇧Born Stella Charmaud in Constantinople, she volunteered for the Red Cross during World War I and in 1925, began working for Rufus Isaacs who was then Viceroy of India. After Isaacs' first wife Alice, died in 1930, Stella married the newly ennobled Marquess of Reading.

🎖After the War, the WVS became the engine for setting up refuge rooms, organising holidays for disadvantaged children, delivering Meals on Wheels and running Darby & Joan clubs. In 1944, Stella Reading was made a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire (GBE) and in 1958 became the first woman to take a seat in the House of Lords in her own right. She established Women's Home Industries, which successfully supported British craft and cultural traditions in clothing and textiles, and became a prolific exporter to the United States and Canada.

💪 👜 I wonder what – and who – Stella Reading encountered with her monogrammed wartime Waldybag on her arm, though I have an idea Churchill must have been in her address book. The IWM has kindly let me share their own images of the gas mask Waldybag so you can see how the mask would have fitted in (it’s not the one on show in the exhibition but a more cylindrical one) and the beautiful interior in the upper portion in black calf and grey pigskin with a clever and practical purse that cleverly secured to either side of the frame. The bag was donated as part of a collection to the IWM by the Royal Voluntary Service and how lucky I am to be able to have been able to unearth this part of H Wald & Co's history.

🥳🥂👛Whether you are a-partying or not this New Year’s Eve, the sight of this swags-and-tails hand-painted Waldybag puts me in a celebratory mood.

✨It’s a ball-drop, a firework display, a champagne pop and a cabaret all by itself.

💐 It’s also one of the most refined and detailed example of hand-painting that I have ever seen.

🎨🧑‍🎨 I suspect it is the work of Peggy Wood, who with her mum Joan and great aunt Florence, produced the beautiful designs that adorned the equally beautiful Waldybags.

📣 I had the privilege of hosting Peggy and her husband Harry to a viewing of Bags: Inside Out earlier in December and I will post about that very soon.

🥰 In the meantime, enjoy this timeless wonder, which comes to you, courtesy of Waldybag London and vintage store in Paris.

👜🎇A humdinger of a Waldybag, such an awesome and unusual shape. It’s definitely a 1970s design and perhaps one of Dad’s last creations.

🌟👜 Spotlight on a unique Waldybag

🖌☝🏼This is perhaps the most beautiful and rarest of all the hand-painted Waldybags.

⭐️🌼💍It’s the only one (I know of), painted on gold kidskin (goat), a very fine, almost butter-soft, leather. It features a brushed gilt frame and intricate chrysanthemum clasp with a pearl at its centre – the clasp would make a knockout ring, too!

🧑‍🎨🖌🌸The classic hand-painted detail executed by Florence Campbell is on both sides with a central motif and further details around the edges and base. I particularly love the little sweep of flowers that curves under the clasp, drawing the eye towards it.

✨✨✨And, oh! The shimmer of the glass beads and paint, which I think I’ve managed to capture better than ever before. This one gives and gives 😉

The proud owner of this bag is my brother Harry’s wife, Vered Wald.

💷➖➕✖️Stock books are illustrated records of the materials and costs for manufacturing an item.

👜💎✍️These photos kick off with two such books sitting side by side at Bags: Inside Out: one for Cartier displays exquisitely detailed artistry for the elements of a 19th century chatelaine (essentials for the lady of the house which hung from the waist: notebook, scissors, thimble, pencil), and one for H Wald & Co dating from the late 1930s itemising how many metres of satin, which skins, what colour, and the hardware - here are frames with Scottie dogs! My but we’re both in good company, clearly! 😀

I’ve included a photo from the exhibition of how a chatelaine would look - and we think today’s handbags have a lot of metal!

👜🤎 🐖 🦭 Also, dating possibly from the tail of the 1930s, a Waldybag clutch in brown/wine sealskin (can someone ID?) with asymmetric padded calf design motif and champagne pigskin interior.

2️⃣0️⃣8️⃣ There are 208 pages in this H Wald & Co stock book, so bear with while I look through my photos of each page to see if it’s in there!

🙏🏼 to Brand Spanking Vintage for the Waldybag (and for the Forget-me-not, an added extra for which I am very grateful).

👜 ✏️ ‘It’s surreal seeing grandpa’s work on display in a world renowned museum’

👨‍🦱 My nephew Adam’s response to looking at Morris Wald’s little ideas sketchbooks on display at Bags: Inside Out, at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

👀 I’ve been to the exhibition several times now, on my own, with my brother for the opening night, and with friends. But no visit has been as meaningful as this family visit, most especially for my nephews who never knew their grandfather.

🤩 To see their wonder and pride at so many items on show by H Wald & Co. deepens, too, my grasp of just how significant the brand was decades ago, when Harry and Morris Wald were alive, and now, years later as the impact of the brand is recognised so beautifully in this exhibition.

🤩 I am thrilled to have been involved in the show, augmenting Waldybag’s presence with additional, personal never-before-seen items.

🗓 There’s five months to run before Bags: Inside Out, heads off to Belgium and China, including Hong Kong, to continue its tour – taking the Waldybag name across continents to more viewers.

🎟 Bag your ticket at https://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/bags

10/08/2021

The now iconic Waldybag is flying high on the V&A’s social media platform. Bags: Inside Out continues until 16 January 2022.

Then it goes on tour to Belgium and China, including Hong Kong.
