More on LIVING WITH ART, artist Suki Seokyeong Kang brings us to an old Korean tradition. Without leaving my home, I’ll be taken to the famous court dances, where dancers would perform on square mats. There’s a boundary where they can stand on. Suki says that knowing about the moment of now makes her aware of the past. #livingwithart #sukiseokyeongkang #matseries #courtdance #koreantraditions

LIVING WITH ART is the theme I chose to talk about this week. Being stuck inside for the past two months would have been harder if it wasn’t for the works I fortunately have inside my home. Looking at them opens a dialogue window that leads my mind to other places and to broader questions.

There’s a great deal of ‘access to art’ happening online but with museums and galleries closed for so long, it’s a real privilege to be able to relate these objects physically. This may seem too abstract, but I’ll be giving some practical examples in the following posts. #livingwithart #craftsincluded

Brazilian artist Rubem Valentim Rubem Valentim (1922 – 1991) was among the first generation of artists who were openly inspired by the sacred symbology of Afro-Brazilian religions and adopted a syncretic approach within their respective practices. Following the widespread miscegenation and introduction of Catholicism during Portuguese colonial rule in Brazil, the enslaved West African peoples and their descendants safeguarded their traditions by blending elements of their own religions with that of the colonists’ belief system. #rubemvalentim #theapproach #condo2020 #londonartwalk #visitlondon #london2020 #art #whatsonlondon #londres @ The Approach

Vanessa Carlos is the founder of CONDO, a collaborative experience that allows galleries from abroad to exhibit in town without having to pay the expenses of an art fair. It started in London and had its successful model exported to other cities in the world. This year 36 galleries are showing their art in 17 London spaces. 🔛 from 11st Jan til 8th Feb.

Lele Rehder cuts out each of these leaves from a photo print and pins them down onto another printed surface. The composition is rich and dense. The tridimensionality of the work gives us a sense of perspective and depth. Her @lele_rehder environmental awareness and activity brings in more meaning her journey as an young but promising artist. Sunflowers
Jacob Epstein

Sculptor Jacob Epstein was close to Matthew Smith and admired Van Gogh from the time he first saw his work in 1903. He took up landscape and flower-painting later in life and made at least ten images of sunflowers between 1933 and 1936. He was less concerned with beauty than earlier British artists and more interested in the energy of Van Gogh's brushwork and colour. Like Van Gogh, he explores the cycles of growth and decay through variations of colour from yellow to brown.

Spectrum of Brick Lane 2
David Batchelor

"Batchelor is fascinated by the intense artificial colours that surround us in modern cities. He observes that 'most of the colour we now see...is plastic or metallic/ it is flat, shiny, iridescent, glowing or flashing.' One side of this sculpture presents vivid illuminated colours. The other is 'like the back of an old stereo', in the artist's words. He relates this 'front-and-back relationship' to the city environment, distinct from the 'in the round' experience of the natural world. The title refers to a restaurant-lined street in East London."

Olive Trees
Vincent van Gogh

This was one of a number of paintings of olive trees Van Gogh made while staying at the Saint-Paul hospital. The steep slope and swirling foliage appear to capture the energy of the local 'mistral' wind. The work was shown at Van Gogh's first solo exhibition in Britain in 1923. It was bought by Michael Sadler, one of the leading British collectors of modern art, before being acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland in 1934.

Jenny Holzer | Protect me from what I want... 1984

🎨 Jenny Holzer (born July 29, 1950) is an American neo-conceptual artist, based in Hoosick Falls, New York. The main focus of her work is the delivery of words and ideas in public spaces.

Holzer belongs to the feminist branch of a generation of artists that emerged around 1980, looking for new ways to make narrative or commentary an implicit part of visual objects.

Capturing love at first sight. See Titian's 'Bacchus and Ariadne' in Room 6. Bacchus, god of wine, emerges with his followers from the landscape to the right. Falling in love with Ariadne on sight, he leaps from his chariot, drawn by two cheetahs, towards her. Ariadne had been abandoned on the Greek island of Naxos by Theseus, whose ship is shown in the distance. The picture shows her initial fear of Bacchus, but he raised her to heaven and turned her into a constellation, represented by the stars above her head. The programme for the series was probably devised by a humanist scholar in the service of Alfonso d'Este. The subject of 'Bacchus and Ariadne' is derived from the classical authors Ovid and Catullus. The painting is one of a famous series by Bellini, Titian and the Ferrarese artist Dosso Dossi, commissioned for the Camerino d'Alabastro, (Alabaster Room) in the Ducal Palace, Ferrara, by Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, who in around 1510 tried to include Michelangelo and Raphael among the contributors. Titian's painting was in fact a substitute for one with a similar subject which the Duke had commissioned from Raphael. Bellini's 'Feast of the Gods' for this room is dated 1514, and the three works by Titian were painted 1518-25. Photo by Ellie in the #nationalgallery Social Media Team.

Founded in 20.09.1909 with the publication of a manifesto written by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, FUTURISM was a moviment that called for the development of a vibrant and innovative modern Italian culture. The central artistic goal was to evoke a sense of speed or dynamism and the geometric language of Cubism played a profound impact on the appearance of Futuristic art after 1911. During the 1920s, Futurist "mechanical art" strove to evoke the essence of the machine. The movement lost momentum with Marinetti's death in 1944.

Here:
1. Amedeo Modigliani (Dr François Brabander, 1918)

2. Gino Severini (Dancer: Ballerina + Sea, 1913)

3. Giacomo Balla (The Hand of the Violinist, 1912)

The gender gap in art history 👥
.
"In a collection of over 2,300 paintings spanning the 13th to early 20th century, why are there so few, 21 to be precise, by women? 😱🤔
.
Despite the obstacles they faced; no formal art training for women, exclusion from male life drawing classes, harassment, and prejudice to name but a few, they succeeded because of their determination and talent. Many were among the most famous and sought after artists of their day. "😌💪👩🎨 By National Gallery

Finally!! 50% women 50% men. Never before in any Biennale!

Curator Ralph Rugoff Reveals Plans for 2019 Venice Biennale

The exhibition will include 79 artists – as compared with 120 in Christine Macel’s biennale two years ago and 138 in Okwui Enwezor’s ‘All the World’s Futures’ in 2015. The majority of these are living and working – another point of difference to other recent iterations – in line with Rugoff’s ambition for the biennale to be a place of dialogue and exchange. Not noted in the press documents but slipped by Biennale President, Paolo Baratta, as a nod to 8 March being International Women’s Day, this will also be the first ever biennale exhibition in which 50% of the artists are female.

🔜 Edvard Munch's The Scream comes to the British Museum in April!
.
.
Edvard Munch: Love and Angst, at the British Museum from April, will explore the Norwegian’s expression of complex, often fraught, human emotions. At a time when Monet was painting landscapes, Munch was depicting love and desire but also jealousy, loneliness, anxiety, grief and mental instability – most memorably in The Scream.
