THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE

We take a brief look today at the extraordinary life of Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary (7th May). Tagore, known as Gurudev, was a Bengali poet, Brahmo Samaj philosopher, artist, playwright, novelist and composer whose works changed the face of Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He won a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for ‘Gitanjali’ and became Asia’s first Nobel Laureate. FRANCIS NEWTON SOUZA (1924-2002)

Today (12th April), on the birth anniversary of FN Souza we take a brief look at his life and works. Souza was born and brought up in the village of Saligao, Goa, India. First expelled from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai for drawing graffiti in a toilet (though he was only correcting the original graffiti that was badly done) and then from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai for being part of the Quit India Movement, Souza founded the Bombay Progressive Artists Group in 1947. A group of modern artists that combined Indian subject matter with Post-Impressionist colours, Cubist forms and brusque and Expressionistic styles. In 1949, Souza shifted to London and in 1954 was invited to participate in a show alongside works by Picasso, Francis Bacon, Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland amongst others at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. All of his works were sold. In 1967, he moved to New York and began experimenting with solvents that dissolved images from magazine pages over which he then painted - “you have to be aware of your medium, your drawing, your anatomy, your perspective, but you’ve also got to be aware of the whole history of art. There is no point in repeating what is done previously. You have to find your own style”. Souza was influenced by Picasso, Michelangelo and Soutine. In 1991 whilst daydreaming in New York, Souza dreamt that Michelangelo shook hands with him - an experience that was not only stunning but felt real. He said “if you listen to great music or view great art, the energy you put into it is transmuted to the listener / viewer and that is the use of great art - you get the energy that the artist has put into the work”. Souza died in Mumbai in 2002. His rebellious life full of energy and his legacy of bold, inventive, figurative and impassioned artworks continue to be admired by art enthusiasts all across the world.
