Details:

The First World War was the single most important event in human history. It lasted 4 years and killed over 10 million people. It transformed the map of Europe. It transformed the constitutions of Europe. And in some cases it even managed to change the geography. And it wasn't just Europe it changed. Its effects spread far and wide.

But what caused it? The arguments started almost immediately and have continued ever since. Library bookshelves groan under the weight of attempts to ask the question.

Patrick Crozier will give the definitive answer. Patrick is a First World War nerd. Some people spend their spare time growing tomatoes and watching football, Patrick spends it reading old editions of The Times and books on what the French army was doing on 22 August 1914. Over the years, he has given talks on the world before the war, and the world after the war. This will be the fourth time he has given a talk on the causes. The talk he really wants to give is on tactics but, tragically, no one has ever asked. One day, one day....

For many years, Patrick was the webmaster and main writer for TransportBlog. He has also written pamphlets with such titles as, "Why British railway privatisation failed" and "Ulster for Beginners". He occasionally blogs at Samizdata.

Booking helpful but not required.
