120318 17:21 AM GMT A personal review of The Portico Gallery; and, what their work means to me... The Portico Gallery, which is located in West Norwood, is a pretty cool place to go and visit. Because I live nearby only just 2 streets away; therefore, I walk/or, ride my bike past there, constantly, all the time(such as when I'm going to West Norwood train station to pick up a FREE Metro newspaper nearly every day). I usually don't bother to step inside of the gallery itself; which, at times(very early morning/late night), is closed; but, instead, remain looking in through the large window space; viewing all of the artworks being quite clearly displayed there. In particular, I often see the artwork of Felix(resident artist); who is also a Yoga teacher there, as well. Felix's 'abstract' artwork is pretty amazing to watch; as there are so many different variations to his particular style; he seems to constantly 'rotate' work being shown on display...so, you are guaranteed to witness seeing something different. At other times, one sees other artists work on display inside of the window, as well; and, some of it is truly top quality, amazing! I recall they had a show, once, of young new and upcoming artist; I went along to visit the show in person...I was able to meet and talk with many of those artists; and, even brought from them a print or two; unfortunately, I could not afford to buy any of their far more expensive canvases. But, I did make a note of their names; and, what their web site is...; the best way to do this is just, simply, take up one of their business cards. Right now, at the moment, I'm thinking of taking a course in doing some Pottery/or, Life Drawing...which are things I'm very deeply interested in learning; I especially like the fact that I wouldn't have to travel very far outside of the area where I live; but, instead, can just merely walk down the road. -(I used to go to Morley 'arts based' College before...; and, it was a bike ride of multiple miles away; and, then, having to ride all the way back, again...which I thought was sheer drudgery! Though, I admit the quality of the teaching at Morley College is, generally, very high.)- The reason why I feel it necessary to write this, admittedly, 'unasked for' review...is because I'm currently aged 54(will be 55 next month, April); and, have been living in West Norwood from ever since age 8; -(I went to Norwood Park Primary School, which still physically exists, thank goodness; however, has now-a-days been renamed); so, I do remember when there was no such thing as The Portico Gallery being around. I think, the people who are running it are doing a truly great job; and, have been a huge help in increasing both 'art awareness'/as well as, in developing a greater sense of community which is open for everyone to come along and participate in. Just wanted to say a very grateful thanks to you all; and, also, I pray that may your wonderful work long continue... ;-)
