Glass Cloud Gallery

Glass Cloud Gallery Glass Cloud Gallery is a London based, artist run, window gallery. The initiative connects the public with fine art practices by collaborating with businesses to commission highly visible exhibitions in windows for the passing world to see.

Footfall Art is a pop up window project that collaborates with businesses to create exhibitions by London’s upcoming artists. It is a unique bridge that connects the public with fine art, providing a valuable platform for exposure to large audiences. Initiated in 2013 by Slade graduate artist, Hannah Luxton, the project has showcased 37 artists to date at Macai Ltd, Camden Peoples Theatre, Walthamstow Village Window Gallery and coming soon to the Tin Cafe in Dalston.

Mission: To increase London based artist's accessibility to general public by providing a unique opportunity to display their work in corporate business windows that have high levels of footfall. Understanding the importance of online presence and word of mouth, Glass Cloud continues to support its artists in this way.

Hannah Luxton installation ‘In the Garden of the Sun’ is an expanded painting featuring motifs, techniques and textures found in her linen paintings.⁣

The stars of the show are two large, tinted, puddle-shaped mirrors that sit on a carpet of moss and lichen, reflecting a world in the enchanting light of dawn and dusk. All the while arches drift in the sky as portals from one unknown world to another.⁣

Fieldworks by Alice McCabe. She is a multi-media artist, creating floral installations, paintings, performances and art education sessions using flowers and cheap or free materials of an ephemeral nature. Underpinning her work is a love of misunderstanding and humour, gleaned from a keen interest in Dada. Most of her works contain a joke or clue in the title to help the viewer get closer to - or further away - from the content of the piece.⁣

The concept behind ‘Fieldworks’ is rooted in the philosophy of natural farmer Masanobu Fukuoka, a self professed ‘do-nothing’ farmer. He advocated for observation and experiments in farming relying on flashes of inspiration over intellectual knowledge, commenting that the minute we think we know nature therein lies the probability we do not and the only option is to go and have another look. This series aims at capturing this inquisitiveness, whilst also encouraging reconsideration of our individual and collective responsibility towards our environment. ⁣

We are excited to present ‘Fieldworks’ a solo exhibition by Alice McCabe @popsymag / @meta_fleur

For Glass Cloud Gallery, McCabe has created ‘Fieldworks’ an installation of floral tapestries made from dried, repurposed and foraged floral materials inserted into a mesh structure in gestures almost like painting. Given their exposure to sunlight the materials will change colour over the course of the exhibition, reminding us of the seasons and referencing the fascination for bringing nature indoors as well as our increased observation of nature this year. Atop of the natural background are badges of chopped up ephemera from exhibitions visited, botanical drawings and the artist’s archive of photographs ‘inspired by nature’. These tokens insert a sense of distance from floral material and reading of landscape, teasing our ability to understand nature and our representation of it.⁣

In light of the new restrictions coming on Monday, we have fast tracked our Pavement PV to tomorrow (Friday)! All are welcome but we ask that those attending please, please respect others by abiding by the social distancing rules. BYOB. We hope to see you!⁣⁣⁣

We are delighted to announce our new solo exhibition open from today by our very own director, painter Hannah Luxton @hannahluxton_.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For Glass Cloud, Luxton presents a wilderness across two windows, one at dawn and one at dusk - the Earth’s most enchanting times of day: The work is inspired by Icelandic landscapes and Luxton’s enduring influences of Art Nouveau and Alphonse Mucha’s Times of Day lithographs, and the natural symmetry employed through painting history to convey a sense of omnipotent power over the land. The installation is an expanded painting featuring motifs, techniques and textures found in Luxton’s linen paintings. A puddle-shaped mirror sits on a carpet of moss and lichen, and arches drift in the sky as portals from one unknown world to another. ⁣⁣

Open from today! For Glass Cloud, Julie F Hill likens the window gallery to the void of a subterranean cavern. Its folded recesses are sculpted from scientific images of deep space along with stalagmites – reminiscent of scientific core samples – that rise from the floor. Astronomical images – registering wavelengths beyond what the eye can see – often invoke uncertain geologies: geological time or ‘deep-time’ being our nearest approximation to the grand scales of the cosmos. In this sense, Cavern represents the idea of thought collapsing on itself as it approaches its perceptual limit, attempting to comprehend the cosmos.⁣ https://www.glasscloudgallery.co.uk/julie-f-hill

So excited to announce that Julie F Hill is coming to Glass Cloud...⁣

Hill’s work responds to the vastness of nature as represented by modern science. Taking an expanded approach to photography and image-making, she creates sculptural installations that explore conceptions of deep-space and cosmological time. Using sculptural processes, scientific imaging software and code she reshapes astronomical data into uncanny phenomena, creating immensities that we can walk among, and enter into. Enigmatic and illusory materials act as conduits or portals, inviting us to cross a threshold to experience the unknowable. Through such environments she questions scientific images and the technologies used to construct them.⁣ https://www.glasscloudgallery.co.uk/julie-f-hill

The paintings Howard Dyke has made for ‘SIREN’ at Glass Cloud ‘are not pretty abstractions displayed in a shop window’ he says’ ‘but reflections of the current mood of unease, violence and unrest. I’ve used some of the visual vernacular of painting - pours, splashes gestural brush strokes, colour shifts and spacial plays, but these are physical collages — imagery cut torn & spliced together to form shifting narratives. Introducing Howard Dyke. Coming to Glass Cloud from 9 July with a brand new reinvention of his colossal paintings. ⁣
bit.ly/2ZN0jDb

Howard Dyke works with paint, collage and photographic imagery, raiding styles of 1990’s process painting, eighties appropriation, through to 1950’s abstraction and Schwitteresque material gathering of the Merz art movement and Dadaism. Using charged imagery foraged for in newspaper and the internet, he constantly makes and remakes paintings, layering the visual information again and again. The scars from previous paintings are evident, bloodied, bruised, stabbed and cut. The palette is unapologetic - shines, matt, lurid, soiled, patterned, industrial, hard and soft. Happy and angry...⁣

Glass Cloud

Glass Cloud Gallery is a London based, artist run, window gallery. The initiative connects the public with fine art practices by collaborating with businesses to commission highly visible exhibitions in windows for the passing world to see. Glass Cloud exhibitions offer new, thought provoking moments in the everyday, created by London’s most exciting art graduates, emerging and mid career artists.

Initiated in 2013 by artist Hannah Luxton, the project began as Footfall Art with an 18 month residency in the office windows of Macai Construction and Interiors Ltd in Bermondsey. Since then Luxton has collaborated with the Walthamstow Village Window Gallery the Tin Cafe, Haggerston and has a regular residency with the Camden Peoples Theatre, curating yearly exhibitions.

In 2018 the project re-branded into Glass Cloud Gallery and was awarded an Arts Council project grant.
