Goldsmiths' Hall

Goldsmiths' Hall The Hall is the third on this site, the Goldsmiths' Company being located here since 1339.

The Hall is the third on this site, the Goldsmiths' Company being located here since 1339. Little is known of the first Hall but the second was erected in 1634-6 and restored after the Great Fire of 1666. It lasted for almost two centuries, but was eventually demolished in the late 1820s. The present Hall, by Philip Hardwick, remains much as he designed it, although there have been changes to the decorative schemes and the use of rooms. The Hall narrowly escaped complete destruction when in 1941 a bomb exploded inside the south-west corner. Faithfully restored on the exterior after the War and internally modified, it retains much of the charm of an urban palazzo. A major refurbishment which was completed in 1990 has further adapted this great building for the 21st century.

It was designed and made by Muriel Meats while she was a student at the Vittoria Street School for Jewellers & Silversmiths in Birmingham and was purchased from the 1937 Coronation Year competition. In the 1930’s advertising campaigns extolled the ill-founded ‘healthy’ virtues of cigarettes and fashionable cigarette canisters such as this one were created to complement this trend.

Ring set by Wendy Ramshaw, 1926

A set of eight, 18ct gold rings with white and red enamel.
Titled ‘The Bow Ring,’ one ring has two prominent ribs designed to involve the hand from both inside and out. The forged contoured rib sits in the palm while the bow arches over the top of the finger.

A characteristic of Wendy Ramshaw’s jewellery is that her stands and rings are integral, it makes her jewellery both sculptural and wearable.

The word 'masterpiece' derives from the piece of work produced by an apprentice aspiring to become a master craftsmen dating back to the 13th Century. The final piece made at the end of a Goldsmiths' apprenticeship is still refereed to as a masterpiece today.

#ObjectOfTheWeek

This week’s chosen piece is a Speech Timer by Jane Short, 2014.

Hour glass body made in spun sections, with champlevé enamel, glass and Cornish sand.
The silver was made by Clive Burr but the speech timer was designed, hand engraved and enamelled by Jane Short.

It was commissioned to commemorate the year of office of Mr Michael Galsworthy as Prime Warden (2010-2011). The design brief was to evoke Mr Galsworthy’s Cornish home. The engraved and enamelled design suggests the landscape of Cornish beaches, rock pools, sea and seaweed. The sand in the timer is from a beach in Cornwall.

The sand runs for seven minutes and is meant to keep speeches that take place at the Hall ‘sweet and short’. See more from the Company Collection > https://goo.gl/WVCBX9
