London Regional Organisation for Civil Defence 1942

By early 1942, London's Civil Defence Organisation had been through the Blitz and was developing into a substantial organisation. The below, a confidential booklet from February 1942, details the various positions of authority within the Civil Defence, from the over-arching regional hierarchy to the heads of the individual groups within the city and boroughs.

I've always found it somewhat perplexing why the Home Guard Auxiliary badges are so sought after. Prices are nearly always over £400 and usually closer to £500. I guess the clandestine nature of the members is a draw. I'm not sure of the numbers issued but I've seen plenty over the years on eBay.

Sadly, given those prices they are faked now but it is proving very difficult for the forgers to match the type of enamelling found on originals.

More about the auxiliaries can be found at https://www.staybehinds.com

I regularly receive emails through the website to identify a badge or insignia. More often than not it is a Civil Defence Corps badge. So, as an easy way of directing people to a list of CDC badges etc I created the following page.

If anything is omitted let me know (I'm not adding CDC enamel lapel badges as they are obviously CDC). I currently don't have a good photo of the scarlet backing to the proficiency stars.

WW2 Queens messenger badge ministry of food, silver & enamel, home front Rare | eBay

A rare badge in silver for the Queen's Messengers. Has a few surface marks. Usually go for around £50 mark, which is a tad low IMHO given their scarcity.

The badge was only worn whilst employed on the convoys. An uncommon badge. Pin backed. marked silver on reverse. The QM convoys were managed via the Ministry of Food. The convoys also contained several despatch motorcyclists.

The Harris

This ARP badge from our collection was worn by the Rescue & Demolition squad of the Air Raid Precautions Service in Preston during WWII. 🔦

The service had a number of squads including the Rescue & Demolition team ⛑️ who rescued casualties from damaged buildings and Wardens who patrolled the streets during blackouts and who acted as first responders after raids. 🏃

Pat's mum was an ARP Warden and you can read her story 👉 https://bit.ly/3jUoZn4

WW2 BRITISH BLITZ CIVIL DEFENCE AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS ARP WARDENS POST SIGN | eBay

I imagine after Lucy Worsley's recent Blitz Spirit programme there was a general spike in interest regarding CD and ARP. I certainly saw a spike in traffic to the website (mostly regarding Barbara Nixon). However, on the back of that I imagine folks also looked at buying ARP-related stuff. Hence, stupid prices being paid for reproduction and fake garbage on the tat bazaar...

At various War & Peace Shows over the years there has always been an Irishman with loads of white kitchen boxes full of all sorts of British, German and other reproduction insignia and badges. There were a few original uniform items but he generally had piles of repro stuff - all absolutely dirt cheap. Amongst all these were boxes of these fantasy ARP armband like the one shown below. There were hundreds of them at something like a few quid.

I have seen them filter into sales at "auction houses" and also on eBay. This beauty is advertised at £28...

I've finally managed to fill a gap in my badge collection with the CAGS Civil Defence Instructor badge. It was issued to those that had attended and successfully completed the Civilian Anti-Gas School instructors' course. It's in the nationally trained gold colour (same as the ARPS Air Raid Precautions School badge). Although CAGS appears to have been a regular course run throughout the war at the Civil Defence school in Falfield, Glos., the instructor badge is extremely scarce (I've only seen this one and two other examples in 20 years). This popped up on eBay recently - I was just lucky enough to be online at the right time.

There are a number of Unilever House ARP badges with a few colour differences. This one currently up for grabs on eBay is probably one of the rarer ones with a red top and white base. If I remember correctly a similar one sold last year for well over £100 and I'd expect this to reach the same heights.

BBC One - Blitz Spirit with Lucy Worsley

I'm sure most of you saw 'Blitz Spirit with Lucy Worsley' on BBC 1. I thought it was a well-made programme. There was some colour footage I don't think I've seen before, so be interesting to find out where that came from. There were a smattering of errors regarding film (eagle-eyed viewers would have seen a CDC badge creeping into one section) and a couple of uniform oddities but on the whole it was a well presented and engaging piece.

If you missed it I would recommend watching on iPlayer: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000sm7s

Lucy Worsley explores the lives of six real people who lived through the Blitz.

Cropped up on eBay and a new badge to me. The coat of arms usually means something official. Though it has ARP in the scroll, one would assume an "Air Raid Precautions" connection but it could possibly be for some other reason.

A 1943-dated warden's austerity pattern BD that has had the buttons changed. Not something I've seen too often and looking at the sewing I'd say it could possibly be a post-war addition.

Sold immediately on eBay at a BIN price of £100.

This sign popped up at an auction site and I was generally unaware of A W Bombs; a self-igniting Molotov Cocktail that sounds incredibly dangerous. This link has a lot of information on them and on the documentation shown there is mention of "ARP Control Companies of Home Guard". Good luck to those brave souls that tried launching these with the Northover Projector...
