Science Projects

Science Projects Science Projects specialises in the field of interactive exhibits. They have a science centre, travelling exhibitions and a design & build service.

Science Projects was set-up in 1986 as a non-profit organisation ‘dedicated to the promotion of science to the public by creating interactive exhibitions’. Since then, they have created exhibits for hundreds projects around the world, reaching an audience of millions. The organisation is different not only because it designs and builds exhibits; they also run a successful science centre and travelling exhibitions. Importantly, their underlying philosophical roots have always been committed to the promotion of learning.

Having fun with the Bernoulli exhibits before they’re shipped off to Vitensenter Nordland this week.

These exhibits explore Bernoulli’s Principle and allow you to see how fast-moving air pushes an object up and can even keep it suspended by creating high and low pressure areas around the object.

Drip drip! 💧 💧

This zoetrope is part of the physical phenomena set going to Vitensenter Nordland

Zoetropes work by producing the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings in progressive phases of that motion. As you spin the drum and look through the slot the pictures come to life!

Keith putting the strength of our arch bridge for Vitensenter Nordland to the test! 💪

When the individual blocks are arranged into an arch it forms a very strong structure. The curved shape allows the load to be spread out across the entire bridge instead of pushing straight down.

Now more than ever, you may be wondering how our bodies deal with intruding microbes 🦠

An important part of our immune system is a type of white blood cell called a macrophage. Along with many other roles in the body, these cells are able to engulf and digest foreign microbes in a process called phagocytosis.

Together with Nordnorsk vitensenter we have made a 3D model of a macrophage. Visitors can explore the cell using the microscope arm and learn the stages of phagocytosis and how these hungry cells protect us from disease.

Always lovely to revisit a previous exhibit! Nice to see the Splash Zone sparkling again and ready for visitors.

We scrubbed and deep cleaned our Splash Zone with the help of the wonderful Science Projects who designed and made it. It needed some love after 4 months without us, but we're pleased to see it gleaming again

The Beetlestone* Award Committee, in partnership with BIG, is delighted to announce that the first winner of this prestigious Award which recognises “leadership and legacy in the field of informal science learning”, is Steve Pizzey of Science Projects Ltd and the Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux. Steve was one of the very first people in the UK to be involved in hands-on science exhibitions. His travelling Discovery Dome in the mid-1980s was a prototype for many similar ventures which have followed. After a career in industry Steve joined the Science Museum and in due course became the Deputy Director involved in setting up what is now known as the Media Museum in Bradford. He established his own company with charitable status, Science Projects Ltd, in 1987 and the exhibits designed and built there are now to be found in science centres and museums around the world. Science Projects is also responsible for the science centre at the Herstmonceux, which for many years was the host to the BIG Event. Steve was also the holder of a NESTA Fellowship to study ‘Science in the Landscape’ – a continuing passion. Colin Johnson, chair of the Beetlestone Award Committee, says “It is no exaggeration to say that BIG itself and the science centre network as it now exists in the UK, owes much to Steve Pizzey’s pioneering and sustained efforts to ‘bring science to the people’ and to bring together those who practise that profession. Steve’s 40+ years of devotion to informal science learning, and his important tangible legacy, are indeed worthy of this first Award.” *John Beetlestone (1932-2017) was the founding director of Techniquest, the UK’s first purpose-built science discovery centre. This Award has been made possible through the generosity of his family and friends.
