A last-minute addition to our @palazzo_grassi programme discovered on a @archfashfilm research trip: ‘Sonia Delaunay', Keller-Dorian, 1926-7. This rare fashion film is an exquisite showcase of Sonia Delaunay’s ‘Simultaneous’ dresses, coats and fabrics, quite possibly made at the artist’s Parisian studio and home at 19 Boulevard Malesherbes. Dating around 1926-7 and filmed using the tricolor additive Keller-Dorian process (later also known as ‘Kodacolor cine film’), the film presents Delaunay’s geometric designs in rich colours. Having gradually shifted focus from painting to textile and clothing design in the early 1920s, and advocating the production of unique, one-off pieces, Delaunay treated her design work – and quite clearly also this film production – as an extension of her artistic practice. The film was one vehicle with which to make her case that there should be no hierarchy between fine and decorative arts: among other things, Delaunay used the film in her lectures about the influence of painting on clothing design. Cinema’s fascination with metallic sheen goes back all the way to the medium’s early days – something we explore further at @archfashfilm.
Check here the sparkling sequinned tights. The film ‘à la manière de Loie Fuller’ is titled Lina Esbrard: danse serpentine, and was made in c. 1902 by Alice Guy for Société L Gaumont et compagnie. NB. Alice Guy is the first female filmmaker we know of.
Lina Esbrard wears a Fullerian white serpentine costume decorated with serpents, which undulate as the skirts swirl about. Although her arms are bare, her hands and wands are hidden underneath the skirts, in ‘pockets’ created by two layers of fabric sewn together. She reveals her legs during much of the routine.

Alexandra Exter's costume sketch for Aelita, the Queen of Mars. Plays on the Salome costume convention but with a cubo-futurist twist. Plus, clearly, Martian queens possess three breasts, not two. Oh well, progress... come to our screening at Genesis Cinema tomorrow (Tuesday) to hear a heavenly live score by Stephen Horne, mixing piano with a Russian theremin.

PURPLE TV are proud to preview exclusive newly mastered cut of rushes of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s unfinished film The Inferno starring Romy Schneider on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of Fashion in Film Festival 2017, in partnership with Lobster Films and MUBI.

Clouzot’s cameramen Andréas Winding and Armand Thirard shot some twelve hours of film footage, displaying Clouzot's awe-inspiring kinetic experiments. The focus is especially on the 26-year-old Schneider performing simple, seductive actions in careful composed and beautifully color-lit mise-en-scene's, resulting in a bold marriage between the sartorial and filmic. Though Clouzot sought to revolutionize cinema by creating a film using experimental sounds and images of kinetic art to express his hero's increasingly wild fantasy life, the film was abandoned after a few weeks of studio tests in Paris and 10 days on location.

Accompanied by a specially commissioned live electronic score by Rollo Smallcombe, the newly mastered cut of rushes will be shown in a world premiere event The Inferno Unseen for Fashion in Film Festival at the Barbican Centre in London on March 26th 2017.

Come with us on a special journey on board of Ikarie spaceship tomorrow @princecharlescinema. Watch a recently restored print! This 1963 film was based on Polish sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem's book The Magellanic Cloud, never translated into English. It describes an idealised society of the distant future whose main concern is (noble) scientific discovery. We are talking alien intelligence, outside of our solar system. Come and see what this international crew eat, what they wear, how they exercise and occasionally go loopy. The film is a kind of philosophical-psychological meditation about man in space. Unlike the book it was made bang in the midst of the space race, so stakes are higher. Plus, it was undoubtedly something that made Stanley Kubrick rethink the genre of sci-fi... #ikariexb-1 #jindrichpolak #fashioninfilmfestival #stanleykubrick #2001 #spaceodyssey

Voyage to the End of the Universe was the US release version of Czechoslovak space opera Ikarie XB-1 (1963). Dubbed, and in places drastically altered for the American sci-fi audience. This poster stands for everything Ikarie is not - a trashy, spectacular space adventure (no judgement there, trashy is fine). But the original Ikarie is a sombre, cerebral, meditative film about the quest for extraterrestrial intelligence (yes, Kubrick saw it before making 2001...) and about imagined challenges of putting man into space, long-term. And all this is also a great excuse to picture what a utopian future might look like in terms of design. We are showing @princecharlescinema on Tuesday 14th March. #ikariexb1 #fashioninfilmfestival #scifi #czechfilm

General information

Fashion in Film is an exhibition, research and education project based at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Since its foundation in 2005, the Fashion in Film Festival (FFF) has become a leading showcase for the common ground shared by fashion and film. More than just a celebration of fashion in film, the festival encourages critical response to its content, and addresses current practices in the context of film’s long history. Dedicated to promoting new ideas and experimentation, FFF also commissions new work in contemporary “fashion moving image”, bringing together artists, designers, photographers, filmmakers, performers and musicians. Drawing on a rich film history and a wide variety of genres, from feature and documentary film to artist video, animation shorts and newsreels, FFF presents a mix of popular culture, art and the underground which shows how the moving image has represented and interpreted fashion as a concept, an industry and a cultural form. FFF is partnered and supported by a number of major cultural institutions internationally, including the University of the Arts London, Arts Council England, Arts & Business, Film London, Institut Français, Tate Modern, BFI Southbank, SHOWstudio and New York’s Museum of the Moving Image and Tribeca Grand. In addition to the biennial touring festival, Fashion in Film's curators also collaborate on smaller projects including special screenings, conferences and exhibitions.
