💚 Farm at Watendlath, by Dora Carrington, 1921 💚

Always loved this Dora painting of Cumbria. Painted on honeymoon, Dora was a member of the Bloomsbury Group of artists, she studied at Slade School of Art and was known as Carrington (she thought Dora was rather too ‘sentimental’). Carrington also rarely signed her work or exhibited, meaning she was not that well known during her lifetime. I wonder how she’d feel knowing this painting is now on display at @tate Britain🌟

This painting is part of our ‘Four Seasons’ tour which you can book via our website www.thelittlegrandtour.co.uk/summer-2021
for this summer ~ £40 per child ~ 4 children with a private tutor for 2 hours in a gallery 🙌 whilst you wander in peace? 😅😍

📣Ready for Rodin? We have some spaces left for our brand new Westminster tour on 23rd May! Our 9th May tour is now fully booked.

First up will be this magnificent bronze with an intriguing back story by one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century, Auguste Rodin - The Burghers of Calais, 1915. Followed by a 9 foot sculpture of a hero of our time, Nelson Mandela, by Ian Walters and finally ending with the remarkable Millicent Fawcett sculpture, by Gillian Wearing, which honours the suffragette movement.

We will enjoy all this and more with the stunning backdrop of Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, built by Sir Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. Our tour will look at freedom from oppression and the history behind these incredible people and the stories which give them life.

Only a few places left for 30 March....! Other days all fully booked now! We will be running more of these outdoor tours after Easter for anyone who has missed out this time ☺️

We are so excited to bring you some new tours which we hope will fill that gallery shaped hole until we can get back to what we love best. Feeling sad this al fresco scene is now not even possible after the latest lockdown starting this Thursday...the effect on businesses and everyone’s mental health will be huge..praying we will get back to some sort of normal by Christmas....🙏🏻

Cafe Terrace at Night by Van Gogh, an artist who had many mental health struggles and found a therapy through his art. Perhaps we should all be painting and creating as much as possible over the next few weeks!?

Stay safe and well friends 😘

👻 Happy Halloween from us and Hans Holbein! Spot the Skull 💀 in this painting...to see it & learn more head to the @nationalgallery video in our BIO

Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors, 1533 is the Renaissance’s answer to Optical Art 🤪

The skull is painted in ‘anamorphic perspective’ ~ an invention of the Early Renaissance. It’s meant to be a visual puzzle as the viewer must look at the painting from high on the right side, or low on the left side, to see the form of a 3D human skull!

〰️〰️Fall, 1963, Bridget Riley 〰️〰️

Art wizard Helena, is in Cornwall this week and we’ve been thinking about Bridget’s childhood spent in Cornwall! Bridget Riley was born in 1931 in London & when World War II broke out her family moved to Cornwall. She would explore the coastline and caves where she would sit and watch the reflections in rock pools. She also liked looking at the sea and how the light made it change colour 💙

Is this a moving waterfall? Or a fall in all senses of the word? Bridget was the leading light in the 1960’s for Op Art creating shapes, colours and patterns in special ways which made images that look as if they are moving or blurring. Op Art means Optical Art! 👁🤪🧐 Does it make your eyes go funny?

🍂 Chosen by Helena 🍂The picture I am currently loving - Autumn Composition, Flowers on a Table, 1932 by Ivon Hitchins @tate

We can always bring Autumn inside even if we are having to spend more time at home! Collecting leaves and conkers & painting a still life or even painting on them 🎨

This painting is by Hitchens when he was living in London and you can see there is a big Cubist influence in this work. What autumnal things do you think you can decipher...? 💛❤️💜💚

🍂Is there anything more nostalgic of childhood than a conker🍂

If there’s one book to buy for all generations ~ it’s ‘The Lost Words’ by @jackiemorrisartist @robgmacfarlane ~ and how lucky to come across the exhibition of the book up at #thesill on #hadrianswall this week to see the wonderful acrostic poems and sketches which we have become so familiar with! As Jackie says:

“I want The Lost Words to delight the mind and the eye and send children to sleep dreaming of wild things.” 🤍

Artist Hew Locke has been addressing the historic symbolism of statues, monuments and street names for nearly two decades in his work. In response to ongoing debates around ‘erasure’ or preservation he said, “This doesn’t solve the problems of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic people in this country. It’s a symbolic gesture...As we head towards another recession that will likely disproportionately impact black and brown people, it is time to think about the systemic changes society also has to make” In this article for artnet Locke emphasizes the need to teach and talk about slavery and its legacy in schools. Hew Locke worked directly with the Colston statue in 2006. He talked about this and other projects when he was keynote speaker at our 2018 Ways of Seeing schools conference for A level art and art history students.
