One of Botticelli's most spectacular paintings 'Mystic Nativity' depicts the birth of Christ, celebrated as the glorious revelation of God on Earth in a unique and colourful image. Set in a glade within a forest, the stable where Christ is born is shown with a thatched roof pitched over the opening of a rocky cavern. The infant Christ reaches up towards the Virgin Mary, oblivious of his visitors, the Three Kings stand on the left and the shepherds on the right. The golden dome of heaven has opened up and becomes visible from earth, encircled by twelve angels holding olive branches entwined with scrolls, a symbol of peace. 🕊️

The meeting of the divine and the human in the new-born Christ is shown symbolically in the embrace of three pairs of angels and men in the foreground. Among their feet, winged demons and tiny horned devils scuttle for shelter in the underworld through cracks in the rocks. This is an unusual sight in a nativity scene, thought to have been added by Botticelli as a commentary on political events of the period. This painting looks forward to the fulfilment of peace and to man’s reconciliation with God: https://bit.ly/3xXSxr2

Thinking slightly outside the box for a Halloween post! Only so many times we can post Kusama Pumpkins so please show some 🧡 for Symbolist French artist, Odilon Redon. He painted the stuff of dreams and nightmares. We have selected suitably orange hued paintings, Lady Macbeth 🗡 & Butterflies 🦋

If you have a chance to go to the Musee D’Orsay in Paris, his pastels (his favourite medium) are a must see!

💚 Farm at Watendlath, by Dora Carrington, 1921 💚

Always loved this Dora painting of Cumbria. Painted on honeymoon, Dora was a member of the Bloomsbury Group of artists, she studied at Slade School of Art and was known as Carrington (she thought Dora was rather too ‘sentimental’). Carrington also rarely signed her work or exhibited, meaning she was not that well known during her lifetime. I wonder how she’d feel knowing this painting is now on display at Britain🌟

This painting is part of our ‘Four Seasons’ tour which you can book via our website www.thelittlegrandtour.co.uk/summer-2021
for this summer ~ £40 per child ~ 4 children with a private tutor for 2 hours in a gallery 🙌 whilst you wander in peace? 😅😍

📣Ready for Rodin? We have some spaces left for our brand new Westminster tour on 23rd May! Our 9th May tour is now fully booked.

First up will be this magnificent bronze with an intriguing back story by one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century, Auguste Rodin - The Burghers of Calais, 1915. Followed by a 9 foot sculpture of a hero of our time, Nelson Mandela, by Ian Walters and finally ending with the remarkable Millicent Fawcett sculpture, by Gillian Wearing, which honours the suffragette movement.

We will enjoy all this and more with the stunning backdrop of Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, built by Sir Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. Our tour will look at freedom from oppression and the history behind these incredible people and the stories which give them life.

The Little Grand Tour will be offering 30 minute children’s tours at Masterpiece London, providing a chance for children aged between 6-13 years to enjoy and interact at a fair which brings them the very best of art, design, furniture and jewellery, from antiquity to the present day.

There will be a variety of tours on offer, chosen by the children themselves, exploring Impressionist, Expressionist and 20th century art. They will also look at Portraiture throughout art history and for older children, they will discover art within interior design.

There will be a Treasure Hunt map available for all children to use throughout the Fair, available to download online here (https://bit.ly/2M5fFdI) or you can pick up a copy at the Information desk at the Fair.
What ages is the tour most suitable for? Do you run any suitable for pre-schoolers? Thank you
