On Monday our gardening group planted a living willow bower. This consists of long willow whips and shorter lengths of different Salix (willow) varieties. The whips are planted and woven together to create the bower shape. The photos show the work in progress - look out for photos next spring as the green shoots and catkins start to appear. 🌳

Lovely photo of something that looks a lot like a bee enjoying the autumn sunshine on the buddleia.
It is in fact a hornet-mimic called the Hornet Hoverfly or the Hornet Plumehorn, Volucella zonaria. Handsome, isn't it?

A lovely message left by two visitors to the Quiet Garden.

Why not come and have a look for yourself? The garden is open dawn to dusk, and it’s a wonderful place to spend a little time. Children are welcome too 😊

This is a little bit late, but thank you so much to everyone who came to the Garden Party last week. It was fantastic to have so many visitors enjoying the music, the garden and the refreshments. Huge appreciation to the small army of helpers too, you are all amazing.
The event raised £485 for the Quiet Garden.

Just a few photos from the day - we didn't remember to take very many so if anyone has any to share we'd love to see them.

The Jubilee red, white and blue flowers in our containers are looking gorgeous. A little bit late but will be perfect for the Garden Party in a couple of weeks.
The caterpillar is a Mullein Moth, feeding on buddleia - these can grow to 5cm long! The Quiet Garden is completely organic and definitely intended to encourage wildlife so we love to see all the invertebrates making a home here.

It's a busy summer here at St Seraphim's! As well as being open through the Jubilee weekend, in a few weeks we are hosting a Garden Party. We haven't been able to do this for a couple of years so we are extra happy to welcome all our friends and supporters this year.
Please do come along - we welcome everyone, whether you have visited the garden many times, or this is your first visit.

Thanks to all our enthusiastic bunting makers, the station is now really dressed up and looking magnificent for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. It is nice to think that perhaps the stationmaster and his staff decorated the station in a similar way for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee way back in 1897.

Recently we’ve been lucky enough to have a new group of volunteers, recruited for us through Norfolk Wildlife Trust. They have been super busy, putting up some new bird nesting boxes and bat boxes (the bat boxes are right up under the eaves of the old station and look a bit like upside down steps…). One of the bird boxes is already being checked out by some of the local blue t**s so we hope it will be occupied really soon 😊
The volunteers are also recording the birds and butterflies seen in the Quiet Garden with the BTO British Trust for Ornithology and Butterfly Conservation.
There is always plenty for volunteers to do in the garden, so please get in touch if you would like to give it a try.

A good article about St Seraphim's by Network North Norfolk, highlighting that we are in search of volunteers.
Volunteer roles available include Welcomers in the Icon heritage Gallery and Quiet Garden, and Collections Management of the Icon, Pilgrimage and Railway archives. There are also exciting opportunities to help create a new railway display for the collection of railway related items, including the old Walsingham station sign, which was lost for many years until it was unearthed in two halves during the renovation of the garden.

If you are interested in volunteering, please come to one of our Autumn Open Afternoons at 2pm until 4pm on Wednesday September 29th and Wednesday October 27th. Refreshments will be provided and the garden is fully accessible for visitors with disabilities.
On those days the wonderful volunteers we already have will be giving guided tours at 2pm and 3pm.

Volunteer led guided tours of the chapel icons continue through September and October on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2pm and 3pm. Tours last around 40 mins and are limited to 6 people, so you are advised to book in advance.

Fantastic news that St Seraphim's is the winner of this year’s North Norfolk Environment Award.
The Trust was nominated by Cllr Tom Fitzpatrick and won 'in recognition of your environmentally sustainable project to develop the long-derelict side of the railway embankment and small other land to create a tranquil garden for residents and visitors for quiet and contemplation.'
So much work has gone into the garden over the last few years so it's great they are getting a little recognition 😀🥇🎉
The garden is open (free) every Wednesday and well worth a visit.
A recent photo of the Quiet Garden at St Seraphim's, taken at last weekend's garden party. It's amazing how much it has changed in the last few years. 🌷🌸🌳💚
