At the end of a long open day you might expect our volunteers to go home and put their feet up. The reality is behind the scenes the work never stops.

Despite arrival times as early as 7am some of our volunteers stayed into the evening yesterday to errect the chimney over 'Bernadette' our Brouhot & Cie single cylinder portable.

What a magical thing to see and hear her happily chuffing away at our Steam Farm.

What an absolute pleasure it is to welcome Kay and her family to Hollycombe on this beautiful, sunny day.

Kay cut the ribbon on our first opening day 50 years ago.

Her family enjoyed our Garden Railway and can be seen here ready to take a journey on our narrow-gauge railway. We hope you have a wonderful day Kay and family!

On Sunday, Hollycombe re-opened for the first time since the Autumn of 2019.

In that time some of our volunteers have battled dark days as the pandemic took away loved ones, affected health and caused upheavals to day-to-day life.

Covid measures saw a safe return to volunteering in mid Summer 2020. This was so important for the mental health of our volunteers. We are all so grateful that Hollycombe has come through the otherside and opened to the public again.

Something so humble as re-opening our gates was a hugely emotive moment for us all. We are all too aware that some museums will be lost to the pandemic.

Sending our best wishes to all museums who find themselves tentatively re-opening.

Hats off to volunteers everywhere! We couldn't do it without you 🎩👏

Covid-19 presented Hollycombe with the opportunity to undertake on-going, in-depth conservation and maintenance work on our historic fairground rides so the main fairground area will be closed.
This investment is an important step in ensuring the rides continue to be here for future generations. Children’s rides suitable for 3yrs - 8yrs old will still form part of our offering.

We'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported Hollycombe by using Amazon Smile. Although it may not seem like a huge amount we received around £100 for the period January to March. If you don't already use amazon smile its easy to use and doesn't cost you anything to do so.

One of the more unknown engines at Hollycombe is Bernadette. A French made portable built by Brouhot in 1896 its a rare engine in the UK.

With the engine mounted on top of the boiler like a traditional stationary engine and a strange fire box shape its an unusual sight to the British eye. Bernadette has never steamed at Hollycombe due to challenges with the boiler. Plans are under way however to connect Bernadette to our farm boiler by piping steam directly into her.

We'll keep you updated on the progress as things develop with Bernadette and all the other engines which are undergoing restoration at the moment.

Today was grey, it rained and rained.

Much respect and thanks to our volunteers for giving rainy Sundays a purpose. They show up and they work hard.

This time last year we didn't know when or how we could safely get volunteering going again. Today whatever the weather, if we are doing what we love then we can't complain.

It's our grey, it's our rain!!

The past few Sundays at Hollycombe have been strange for our volunteers knowing we would have been open to the public in more normal times. We all really miss the magic of customers making cherished memories and it's hard not to feel nostalgic for those long, fun summer days.

Whilst we can't make more memories just yet we can celebrate the ones already made over the past 50 years. If you would like to share any of your favourite memories or photos of Hollycombe then you can share them below or email us at [email protected]

Thank you to Royston Shepherd who shared this photo that he took of his children enjoying our Austin Cars in 1992.
