A new arrival today which may well be noticeable this weekend! It'll be a little while before we safely get the turret in place next to our signal box but we're sure you'll agree it's great to see more improvements taking place around the site.

If you haven't been down to our steam farm recently make sure you make a trip down on our next open day. It's a very tranquil part of the site and it's fascinating to watch all of the machinery working away.

Our volunteers have been hard at work on our garden railway. We are in the process of shoring up a 170m section of the embankment which borders our grade II* listed gardens. The amount of work our volunteers do is quite humbling. We don't always get chance to highlight all of the various works that are undertaken but we are thankful for everything they do 😊

This is very sad news, and we understand the challenges that must face the Waverly going forward. Hopefully some of our wonderful supporters can donate to this worthy cause.

***WAVERLEY WITHDRAWN FROM SERVICE***

It is with deep regret we must inform our loyal customers and supporters that Waverley has been withdrawn from service.

Waverley Excursions Ltd General Manager, Paul Semple has made the following statement.

“Today I have to announce that following extensive efforts to repair Waverley’s boilers we have reached the conclusion that we must stop repairs. We now know that to give Waverley a future she will need new boilers.

The challenge ahead is significant and unlike previous challenges the ship has faced in the last 45 years through her preservation. I am personally appealing to anyone that wants to see this historic ship sail again. I know first-hand the fondness that the general public have for Waverley and I know this news will be upsetting. However, Waverley can sail again if we can raise the funds required to purchase and install new boilers.

The Registered Charity which owns Waverley will shortly launch an appeal to save the ship and ensure she sails again. The cost of the required works is significant but if every passenger who would have sailed this year donated the cost of their ticket towards our appeal we will return Waverley to steam. More than ever we need support to preserve this iconic vessel as the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world.”

Donations can be made now via our website or by texting STEAM 20 to 70085 to donate £20.

Please share to help us save Waverley.

A massive thank you to the Southern Co-op for their generous support as part of their Love Your Neighbourhood programme. With their funding we have been able to purchase an AED (Defibrillator) for Hollycombe. We hope never to need to use it, but we are reassured to have it if ever the need arises.

The bank holiday weekend at Hollycombe was a thoroughly enjoyable one and as always this was due to the dedication of our brilliant volunteers and all of our fantastic visitors.

If you came along over Easter you may have noticed we weren't running the Mayo swings. Despite the many many suitable places for a nesting site it seems someone has set up home inside a part of the ride. Needless to say we will be giving them the time they need to hatch and fly the nest.

Bank holiday Monday is set to be a glorious day. If you haven't been up to Hollycombe over Easter so far here is some of what you can look forward to tomorrow.

We will have Easter trails for children and the Easter Bunny is set to join us again 😊. Gates open from 11:00am and fairground rides will start from 12:30pm. You can ride behind a steam roller and steam locomotives and the Bluebells are out in force across the site.

For the eagle eyed amongst you, it would have been noticeable that there has been lots of work going on with our Quarry Railway. Adjacent to the newly laid sleepers & limestone ballast there is a long stretch of brick rubble. This is the start of a roadway which gives us access to the Quarry and work is underway to make this accessible in all weather. Previously this section has become a quagmire every time it rains and therefore difficult to use at times.

In one of our recent posts it was commented by Tom R -
"Wouldn’t it be great if even just a handful of all the people that visited today were to volunteer a few hours to help with one of the many jobs that need doing!
Painting, gardening, cleaning, building....there really is something that everyone can do!"

Tom is absolutely right that Hollycombe relies on the generosity of an amazing group of people to give us their time to ensure Hollycombe is running for everyone's entertainment. If you've volunteered with Hollycombe previously or you are inspire to come and help send a submission via our online enquiry form.

We are always looking for support in terms of running our children's rides, coconut shy, admissions, cafe, maintenance, gardening and the list goes on way beyond this small selection. Get in touch and let us know how you would like to help us. Thanks 😊

11/04/2019

For those of you familiar with Hollycombe you will know how historic our rides are. The Razzle Dazzle is over 110 years old and sometimes it takes us longer than we would hope to make sure the rides are suitable for passengers to ride in. Its essential we do everything to preserve these unique fairground rides for the future, whilst letting our wonderful visitors experience a piece of the past.

At the beginning of the 2019 season we will be without the Razzle Dazzle so that important restoration work can continue. We are hopeful that we will be able to, subject to approval, bring the Razzle Dazzle back into service in June this year.
