‘Bear with me’. Literally and figuratively.
Follower appreciation post!
Running a small, independent, niche business can be tough.
Having a physical shop to operate, whilst simultaneously doing all of the social media; messages; emails; phone calls; book keeping; sourcing stock; travelling thousands of miles a year collecting and delivering; packing of orders; sending of orders; making pieces; restoring and cleaning of pieces; etc etc is an all consuming 24/7 job. But I don’t consider it a job. As I LOVE what I do. I’ve been a passionate collector of taxidermy and natural history curiosities my entire life. There is no switching off for me, as I live and breath it. It’s only from YOUR support that I’m able to do that.
Every follow; like; and order keeps me going, and for that I am eternally grateful.
And I am even more appreciative of the patience and understanding when it comes to the delays in my response to messages, and indeed getting orders sent out, and for my availability at the shop for visits. Hence the ‘bear with me’ photo! We live in a society that demands instant gratification, and Amazon offering same day delivery has changed how we shop. So again, I thank you for buying my eclectic array of curiosities and taxidermy and for your patience in getting them out to you!
I’m also a firm believer in ‘family first’, and with a lovely little nephew that I want to spend time with and grandparents in their late 80s that need help with things, my time is more thinly spread than ever. But every moment with them is cherished.
A final thank you to my always supportive parents @drcranpa and @fortheloveofmaltese, I wouldn’t be where I am today without you. And indeed my faithful PA (I mean wonderful girlfriend) @chesswess. Your encouragement and companionship on our adventures has expanded my business and personal collection stratospherically. You complete me. I love you.
Stay safe. Stay curious.
As always, your humble and curious servant,

‘What big teeth you have!’
A fantastic antique Timber wolf. Part of the museum collection. NFS.
I’ve had this head for the best part of a decade, and as such, like so many things, I overlook it. But whilst day dreaming in the museum, my eye caught it and I remembered why I love it so much.
The thick chunky shield; hand blown glass eyes; original skull mount so the teeth are real; superb hand sculpted exaggerated flared and snarling gums and tongue.
Wolf specimens in the UK are rare, particularly antique ones.
This one dates to circa 1920, if not a little earlier. It is therefore deemed an antique and legal to buy; sell; and use for a commercial purpose.
A fascinating historical piece, which I’ll remember to look at more often. 🐺

Spotted in Coventry, UK.
Gull flying with half eaten rat, with its entrails dangling in the wind! Pretty good contender for @natureismetal!
@chesswess and I actually saw this Herring Gull pecking at this dead rat in the gutter, when it suddenly grabbed it and started flying off! It flew in the direction we were driving so folllowed it for a short while, seeing the intestines swinging. Chess managed to take these photos.
Inspired by this grizzly act of nature, @evadimante_ drew a tattoo flash for it!
If you get this tattoo from Eva, I’ll send you some FREE curiosities!

Beautiful new addition to the museum.
An unusual and rare half oval wall dome. With charming groundwork and a nightjar in flight. An antique piece dating to circa 1890.
There is a hand written label inside, detailing the taxidermists name and address, to which I can’t currently decipher.

The answer to yesterday’s guessing game, was indeed a PANGOLIN! Well done to all of you that got it right.
Looking like a living pine cone, pangolins are the only scaled mammals in the world. They are truly unique and adorable. But they also sadly hold the title of most trafficked animal on the planet.
They are persecuted for their scales (made of a keratin - the same as fingernails, horn and hair), used in traditional Chinese medicine, and meat, a delicacy for some in China and Vietnam. They are therefore given the highest level of protection, with an Appendix 1 CITES Listing and Annex A EU Wildlife Trade Regulations Listing.
For those that have followed me a long time, you will know that pangolins are one of my favourite animals. I truly believe that their persecution is abhorrent, and those found to be trafficking them or dealing in illegal remains should be given the highest possible penalty. This specimen dates to around 1900, originally mounted in a case, it came up at a south west auction in January this year. It was bought by a friend, who removed it from the case (as it was beyond repair) and had the specimen professionally cleaned and restored and placed on the wood plinth (scroll to see photo of it before). As a worked antique, pre-dating 1947, it is exempt from requiring any paperwork to be legally bought, sold or used for a commercial purpose within the UK (it has been vetted by The Taxidermy Law Company).
This beautiful specimen from a different era will now be displayed in my collection, and used to educate people. It’s shocking that so many people still don’t know what a pangolin is!
There are 8 species (4 in Africa and 4 in Asia), this specimen being a Palawan pangolin (Manis culionensis). Which is endemic to the Palawan province of the Philippines.
The last image shows all 8 species in the ‘Illustrated Checklist of the Mammals of the World’, a superb two volume book from @lynxedicions.

Just a handful of the new insects in stock.
Insects used to be the backbone of my business. Before I even had a shop, I sold framed insects. All produced off of a 3 foot square plastic beer garden table in my bedroom in a house I shared with friends.
A wonderful gentleman made my fantastic handmade oak cases, and even if I do say so myself, they were the best on the market. Sadly, he retired a couple of years ago, and I haven’t ever managed to find someone to produce the same quality cases. Which left me a little disenchanted. But, insects still hold a special place in my heart (my email is [email protected] for goodness sake!).
I know sell them in various frames; in glass domes; and indeed in spectacular large displays under antique glass domes. Also available ‘papered’/‘carded’ (as you see in the photo) to mount yourself! Or set on pins ready for you to add into your own frames or drawers.
It’s impossible to provide a list of what I have available, as it’s quite literally countless. But if you need an insect, in quite literally any form, get in touch.
