On this MAY the 4th (be with you) we celebrate one of the sons of Angus, the wonderfully talented actor Ian McDiarmid.

Ian McDiarmid was born 11 August 1944 in Carnoustie and is best known for portraying Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars film series.

McDiarmid was cast by George Lucas in Return of the Jedi (1983) as Emperor Palpatine, the main villain. Sixteen years after Return of the Jedi, he reprised the role as the character's younger incarnation of Senator (and later Chancellor) Palpatine and Sith Lord Darth Sidious in the prequel films: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. The prequels had him play two faces to his character; he re-created his diabolical interpretation of Palpatine from Return of the Jedi when playing Darth Sidious, the Chancellor's Sith alter ego, but created a pleasant, charming character in Palpatine's public persona.

McDiarmid returned to the role of Palpatine on screen for the first time since Revenge of the Sith in the 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker, the third film in the sequel trilogy, and the ninth and final episode in the Skywalker saga.

How to make your own bird feeder

Bring nature to your doorstep by keeping wild birds fed with a home-made bird feeder.

Follow Chris Wardle, Gardens & Designed Landscapes Manager for the North East east steps to make a perfect bird feeder.

Not only do bird feeders bring more local birds into your garden so you can see them up-close, they provide an invaluable food source, particularly during times of year when resources might be scarce.

Help us find out if it's true that only 51% of Scots know what the Declaration of Arbroath is, fill in the very short poll linked.

I'd hope us Angus people will know the right answer!

A really excellent piece about the Declaration of Arbroath and how only about 50% of Scots know what it is!

A message from our chief executive, Simon Skinner, “As I have said before, our absolute priority is to ensure the wellbeing of our visitors and workforce. It is this that has led us to today’s very difficult decision.

To support non-essential travel instruction, we are closing all our remaining open properties, including gardens, grounds and country parks along with our car parks and holiday let properties. I am truly sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience this is causing but for the safety of our visitors, volunteers and staff this is the right course of action.”

“I LOOKED IN THE LIBRARY FOR MORE WORKS BY J M BARRIE, AND MADE AN IMPORTANT DISCOVERY. IT WAS A NOVEL ABOUT JOURNALISM CALLED ‘WHEN A MAN’S SINGLE’ --IN IT A CLEVER JOURNALIST EXPLAINS TO ANOTHER THE ART OF WRITING SHORT SKETCHES. IT WAS A SIMPLE REVELATION. TWENTY YEARS LATER WHEN I READ H G WELLS’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY I DISCOVERED THAT BARRIE’S BOOK HAD TAUGHT WELLS HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL WRITER. IT TAUGHT ME INSTANTLY.” V S Pritchett in A Cab at the Door. I wonder what the advice was that the clever journalist gave to his young colleague? Does anyone have the book, or know the passage VSP mentioned here?
