Happy Mother's Day! ๐ Today we would like to celebrate an amazing mother who for many years lived in the Borough: Dorothea Jordan. ๐ญ๏ธ
Dorothea was an actor and mistress of William, the Duke of Clarence, who later became William IV. They were very happy together, having 10(!) children across their 10 year relationship, living together at Bushy Park.
William ended their relationship in 1811, when his debts became so bad he needed to find a wealthy heiress to marry. This broke Dorothea's heart. He informed her of the end of their relationship by letter, which she read just before she went on stage. No one knew what had happened, but the audience did remark they thought it was odd that Dorothea would cry when she was supposed to laugh... ๐ข
They had a 'separation' agreement that meant Dorothea got an annual allowance and custody of their daughters, William had custody of the sons - with the understanding that Dorothea would no longer act.
This was to be Dorothea's undoing. Before her relationship with William, she had three other partners, two of which she had 4 children with (yes, that is 14 children in total! ๐ฒ) Her eldest child, Frances, had married and her husband had gotten into debt, so Frances turned to her mother for help. So in 1814, Dorothea returned to the stage to help raise money for her.
When William found out he was furious, cut off her allowance, and refused to let her see any of their children. Dorothea died alone, and penniless in St Cloud, near Paris, France in 1816 ๐ข
When William became King in 1830, he did redeem himself slightly. It is said, that one of the first things he did as King was to commission the statue you can see in the images. It is of Dorothea and their two eldest sons. He wanted it to be put in Westminster Abbey, but the clergy refused, so it has been on a journey around several smaller churches, and is now at Buckingham Palace, in the Picture Gallery - ironically somewhere Dorothea would never have been allowed to go in life.

Happy International Women's Day! โ
It seem only fitting that today, we celebrate the story of an amazing woman who lived in the Borough: Sophia (pronounced so-fire) Duleep Singh.
Her father was Maharaja Sir Duleep Singh. the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire.
Sophia's mother was Bamba Mรผller, who was half German and half Ethiopian.
Her godmother was Queen Victoria.
She lived in Hampton Court in an apartment in Faraday House given to her by Queen Victoria as a grace-and-favour home.
Despite being born to immense privilege, she chose to dedicate her life to a great cause: Women's Suffrage. It would have been so easy for her to ignore this movement, and enjoy a comfortable life, but she chose not to. This was a result of a life changing trip to India in 1907, where she saw as she faced the realities of poverty in India and what her family had lost when the British made her father 'surrender' his crown.
A short social media post doesn't do her story justice, so if we have piqued your interest, we highly recommend that you read her biography, "Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary" written by another amazing woman (and Museum of Richmond Patron) Anita Anand.

#Museum30 #Day29 #Movement On display in the Museum we have this amazing movement rom the Workhouse Clock. In the summer of 1819, two local Justices of the Peace, Thomas Price and Mungo Dick jointly presented the workhouse with a decorative cupola and a large clock which were installed in the centre of the building facing towards Queenโs Road. Such developments would have been a matter of civic pride. The original core of the workhouse building with the clock tower now forms part of the King George Square residential development. Both the cupola and clock dial remain today. However, the clock mechanism was replaced in 1976, and is now in the Museum. And it does still move - but the Team don't wind it very often as it is a bit of a workout! #richmond #richmonduponthames #localhistory #workhouse
