Hello! Yesterday someone kindly dropped these medals off at the Cookworthy Museum (or at least left them on a table in our entrance hall). We'd love to know more about them (one of them is inscribed but we know nothing else about the recipient) so please do get in touch with us on 01548 853235 so we can add the details to our accessions. Thanks in advance!

PICTURE OF THE MONTH - SEPTEMBER 2024.

Back to school! Not a photograph this month, but a painting which is available to view in the Cookworthy Room at the Museum. The painting is of Thomas Crispin, who built the Kingsbridge Grammar School (which now houses the Museum) in 1671. In 1689 in his will he left monies, namely “£5 a year for repairs; £15 for the head master, in consideration of his teaching at least 15 free scholars in classical learning; and £10 to a master for teaching 25 poor children to read and 12 to write. To provide for these payments, he left a farm of 72 acres at Washbearhays, in Bradninch (near Cullompton) now worth about £40 a year.”

Transcribed from William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of Devonshire, 1850.

Postcards of this painting are available for sale in the Museum shop.

Did you know that the Museum has a collection of over 30,000 images which are available to purchase?
