To our lovely visitors,

We have thought hard about how to proceed with the change of covid restrictions.

🐚 We will continue to prompt visitors to scan in using our QR poster on arrival.

🐚 Staff will continue to wear masks to protect others and we will recommend you to do the same unless exempt.

🐚 Sanitising stations will remain in place.

🐚 Card payments remain our preferred method of payment.

🐚 We will continue to monitor numbers inside and you may be asked to wait outside if we are busy.

Hopefully these measures will keep everybody safe, happy and ensure all our staff and guests feel comfortable during their visit.

See you soon!

Did you know our museum was purpose built in 1915? It was carefully designed by Alfred Jodrell so he could see his lovely collection at its best.

On days like today, the sun shines so beautifully through our glass displays. Why not pop in on bank Holiday Monday (yes, we're open on Monday!) and have a look β˜€οΈ

You might also like to swing by Bayfield Estate, Natural Surroundings, Cley Spy and Glandford Delicatessen on your visit! See you soon 😊

Wow!
What a busy we week we have had with so many visitors making their way through the doors (6 at a time, of course!).

We would like to thank everyone who has visited over the school holidays and supported the museum so far. If you haven't made it yet, don't worry there is still plenty of time to visit. We are open until the 31st October this year. Our opening times can be found here: www.shellmuseum.org.uk

We are having a blast seeing so many people at the moment at the museum! Some families come every year when they come up to Norfolk on holiday, others stumble upon us by chance. We may be a small museum, but we have an array of items on display for you to see. Check out our opening hours on our website: shellmuseum.org.uk

Donations of shells make up a fair amount of our collection and the latest will take your breath away. Today we were gifted these magnificent shell domes by Mr Fisher of Whitby. His wife Pam loved the museum and collected domes and shells, and today we are able to show you her collection!

We are thrilled to be able to open our doors to the public again as of the 4th July. Due to social distancing measures, we will only be allowing one group/household inside the museum at a time. In order to make your visit as safe as possible we ask our visitors to do the following:

- Not to come into the museum if you or a member of your household is displaying Coronavirus symptoms, or have done so in the last 14 days.
- To pay by card where possible.
- To sanitise hands on entering and leaving the museum.
- To avoid touching the glass display cabinets, and to use the cleaning products provided if you do.
- To only touch items you intend to purchase from the shop.

Please ensure that all children are supervised at all times when inside the museum and shop.
Most importantly – enjoy your visit!

Sadly due to the Coronavirus outbreak we have decided to delay opening the museum this year and will no longer open on Easter Saturday. We will reopen in line with government guidance and hope you will still come and visit us in the future!

We will of course keep you all posted on further developments and wish you all well during this difficult time 🐚

Though the weather was grey, we were delighted to host our first morning of still life drawing with those from High Kelling Art Group.

Their focus was 'found objects' and we think they were spoilt for choice! Some beautiful work was produced 😁

If you'd like to use our unique space for a group project or art class do get in touch- [email protected]

We have several immaculate thorny oysters on display @glandfordshellmuseum in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes.

Endemic to the Mediterranean sea, these bivalve molluscs aren't so arresting in their native haunts, often covered with sediment and algae. The quieter the water, the longer the spines tend to grow, though some species have poorly developed spines no matter where they live!

It's easy to forget about the creatures that inhabit these beautiful shells, and often difficult to imagine what they might look like...

Here is a very sweet illustration of a fig shell (Tonnacea) by James Nicholls taken from 'Seashells' by S. P. Dance.

These gastropod molluscs bear their light shells gracefully and are able to crawl rapidly across sandy sea beds on a large, broad foot.

The Murex Shell - these rock shells are a vast family of at least 1000 widely distributed species and endear themselves to collectors and conchologists because of the range of shapes, sizes and sculpturing.

They are all carnivorous; some are able to drill holes in other shells, while others are able to wedge bivalves open with the use of a large projecting tooth on the outer lip.

We had a visit from the grandson of sir Alfred Jodrell's butler this week and were lucky enough to hear about how he helped lay out the museum originally back in 1915 when it was built!

Unfortunately Mr Revell's grandfather was unable to return to his role as butler after being injured in the war, but we were told he took great pride in his work and thoroughly enjoyed setting up our little gem of a museum for Sir Alfred Jodrell!
