Saturday May 16th at 2.30pm The Band Room
Jude Moon Castle is coming to demonstrate Free Machine Embroidery. Drawing with a Sewing machine do come and enjoy something different.
"Jude is an artistic embroiderer with a passion for portraiture and textile art.
She initially studied Creative Embroidery in the 1970s whilst training to be a primary/middle school teacher. During her time at college, she shunned the fashion for creating abstract works inspired by nature and instead pressed her sceptical tutors to let her create portraits, happily with great success. Then on graduating, that was it, as she stepped away from her art to concentrate on her family, sporting pursuits and career.
Eventually in 2015 and now semi-retired, Jude rekindled her interest in creative embroidery, initially stitching animals – including pets of friends and family. However, she was soon back creating portraits and steadily developing her own signature, illustrative style which slowly gained interest from others, along with recognition.
Most of her work today is created by covering the whole surface with just freehand machine embroidery. The result gives the impression that the artwork has been painted or created using pastels, so she particularly enjoys seeing people’s reactions when they are told that her artworks are in fact, entirely stitched.
In 2023 at her first attempt, one of Jude’s embroidered portraits, ‘Al’s Best Mate, Mike’ was accepted for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition.

The following year in 2024, she was joint winner of the Embroiderers Guild Members’ Challenge with her submission of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. She has also undertaken commissions and had articles about her in various local publications.
Whilst much of her work is machine embroidery, she does enjoy hand stitching, attempting to create the same illusion with minute, detailed stitches."( courtesy of Art Profile )

Coming up for the Society in April.

Paint and Craft Morning Tuesday 21st April 9.00am till noon. Please do come and join us bring what ever you would like to do, craft or painting, drawing etc. or just come for a chat, tea or coffee, we are a very friendly bunch. £5.00 charge.
For those who want to, Wendy is going to share some of the techniques she learnt at her recent Course using Charcoal and seascape as a subject.
As this can get a bit messy please bring an apron, a drawing board, something to cover the table with, newspaper, old cloth and if you do not like getting your hands dirty , disposable gloves and a seascape photo of your choice. Wendy has the putty rubbers, charcoal and watercolour paper for you to use but if you do have these then bring these as well.
An example of what we hope to achieve is below.

This should make for a fun morning, but please do feel free to bring what ever you want to do.

On Saturday 25th April Jake Winkle is coming to demonstrate Birds in Ink.

'Jake Winkle studied at Bournemouth College of Art and Design before graduating from Brighton Polytechnic in 1987. After a spell in industry Jake became a full-time professional artist in 1993. He exhibits widely in the South of England and London and is a regular contributor to The Artist magazine. Inspired by colour and movement, his paintings are impressions of the world around him. As well as exhibitions he has undertaken many fine art commissions for individuals and notable organisations including The National Trust. Jake runs successful workshops and masterclasses across the country. During demonstrations Jake likes to explain fully what he is doing and why and within a two-hour demonstration will usually complete an entire painting. His attitude is relaxed but focused and he welcomes the opportunity to explain his theory of watercolour painting and to answer questions from the audience.(Courtesy of Art Profile).'

Workshops Booked for the Year, mark your Diaries.
All are on Saturdays 10.00am till 4pm in The Band Room .
The first one this year is on Saturday May 23rd when Sharon Hurst is coming to do a watercolour workshop showing us some of her techniques, subject Bluebell Wood. Cost to members £37.00
There are a few places left on this workshop so if you would like to attend please make payment to
Bank Nat West
sort Code 60 06 19
Account number 30651638
Account name Cranleigh Art & Crafts Society
Ref to use your surname followed by SH Wksp ( ie Bloggs SH Wksp )
The remaining places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

The next workshop Saturday 15th August when Rodney Kingston is coming to do a Landscape in Oils . He came last year doing Portraits in Oils which every one enjoyed . It was a fun day.
The cost of this one is £35.00 .
Rodney will again provide materials for a cost of £15.00 payable in cash on the day of the workshop, so if you do not have oils and want to have ago this is a great way of trying out the medium. The list for this will be available on Saturday. I will then be sending out the details to those on the list, and again places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Following requests from several members the final workshop of the year will be on Saturday 17th October . I have managed to arrange for Sue Cooper to come, doing a workshop in either Watercolour or Pastel subject animals. This one will be more expensive as Sue Cooper's fee is much more than the others. So for the day it will be £47.00 and there are 12 places available. This is still a reasonable price for an all day workshop, looking at Farnham maltings a two and half hour course costs £55.00.
There will be a sheet available on Saturday where you can add your name and specify your preference.

Don’t forget there will be an exhibition at the arts centre later in the year of members work . So maybe the workshops will inspire some work you may wish to exhibit.
