Since Vindolanda was first founded in around AD85 nine forts have stood on the same spur of ground above the Chainley Burn slowly levelling out the land on which the last stone fort sits. The first Roman scouts of the army would have seen a more defined hilltop

Vindolanda is experiencing storm force winds during Storm Boelo and for safety reasons has closed today. I’ve been staying in the study centre for a now postponed event and walked around with the team for a safety check this morning. Thankfully the Fort and museum are fine but plenty of tree debris everywhere and storm still rages on but should ease later in the afternoon.

The milestone outside the museum at Vindolanda fort south of Hadrian’s Wall has stood by the line of the Stanegate roman road since it was placed here 1900 years ago. No inscription remains so it’s possible the information was painted on. It’s been speculated that it might have been seen by Hadrian as he visited during AD122 as his wall was being planned and built

Due to the severe weather heading our way, Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum will be closed tomorrow, Sunday 25 October.

The safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors is our absolute priority, and we thank you for your understanding.

Roman Vindolanda | Water, wind and fire are not a great combination!

Unfortunately, due to the wet and windy weather forecast for tomorrow, our charity votive kiln firing event at Vindolanda has been postponed.

The good news is that we’ve already got more than 200 ceramic b***s ready and waiting for their moment in the kiln! We’re looking forward to firing them next Saturday, 31 October, when hopefully the storms will have passed. ⬇️

More good news is that both Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum remain open as planned this weekend, and all our other indoor events will be going ahead as scheduled.

Directly to the north of Birdoswald fort on Hadrian’s Wall is Midgeholme Moss which the Roman builders of the original turf fort and wall would have been utilised in the 2nd century for materials
