At Seabegs wood close to the Scottish town of Falkirk is a nice stretch of Antonine wall which clearly shows the much reduced remains of the turf wall and the flat area between it and the ditch known as the berm , this area acted to stop the wall falling into the ditch and also as killing zone if any attacking force reached the base of the wall

A short video showing the well which was uncovered during the latest Carlisle dig, let’s hope the team can reach the bottom in another excavation season? The fill revealed pottery, coins, beads and a spindle whorl. The location is within the building thought to be a temple to the south of early 3rd Century palacial building Thanks to Anna Giecco for the finds information.

A look at the Roman fortlet in the grounds of Kinneil House. The fortlet was once part of the Antonine Wall but the area contains much history including the remains of the cottage used by James Watt to perfect his steam engine.

Unusual things found in Cemeteries, in New Kilpatrick Cemetery two sections of the foundation of the Antonine wall can be found each one around 15 Roman feet wide. The turf wall itself stood around 3.5 metres high possibly with a timber palisade and boardwalk on top.

Continuing the journey along the line of the Antonine Wall we reach the fort of Castlecary which was cut through in the 1840’s by the railway. It’s thought the original plan was for the wall and forts to be built of Stone but the plan was altered to a turf and soil construction however several forts had already been started with stone walls including Castlecary.

A visit to the Bridgeness Distance slab at the eastern end of the Antonine wall, this is a replica but the real one was found close to the tower in the background in 1868

The Antonine wall at Bar Hill fort in Scotland looking west. Built some 20 years after Hadrian’s Wall of turf and soil with a stone base around 15 Roman feet wide. The largely filled in north ditch can be seen with the low rise of the wall on the left. A later stone field wall has been built on the north mound of the ditch. Bar hill was not connected to the Antonine Wall and sits further up the slope on the left.

Excavations outside the fort at Vindolanda in 2012 revealed this well made roman road leading to the Stanegate which ran to the north of the fort and Vicus. The photograph itself is a historical image as the old excavation hut has been replaced by the Robin Birley Archaeological centre now used by today’s excavators
