A silver ingot weighing one Roman pound on display in Tullie House Museum bearing the casting name of “Curmissus” a change of emperor sometimes meant soldiers received an extra payment and this is possibly such a gift?

Sad to see the archaeology reburied again today but the Uncovering Roman Carlisle team hope to be back. The backfilling is necessary to protect the deep archaeology and make sure the area is safe when unsupervised plus the fences have headed off to a new job until we return. Thanks for everyone’s support and we’ll be raising new funds soon.

It’s a wrap, the final day of digging at Uncovering Roman Carlisle was as busy as ever with plenty of finds including some fine samian and black burnished ware pottery. At the last minute a ring appeared. Thanks to the volunteers and archaeologists. Signs of our physical presence here will be returned to the earth but our memories of the shared experience will be treasured for a long time.

A cooler day onsite at Uncovering Roman Carlisle with many areas being recorded and put to bed as we enter our last day. The Severan (early 3rd Century) wall is now fully exposed with a beautiful section showing many layers of Roman occupation. Thanks to the brilliant team of Archaeologists and volunteers as always it’s been a joy to have played a part in the project. The team hope to be back but no dates are currently set.

Lots of recording ,cleaning, measuring going on and the finds continue with a huge chunk of Amphora being found yesterday with a small amount of graffiti on it. The amphora carried olive oil from southern Spain to the edge of empire. Guided tours available just turn up between 9:30am and 3:30pm donations welcome.

It’s been a hot week for the team investigating the area around the Roman fort of Epiacum near Alston. The dig is on until the 30th May. The archaeologists have dug a series of trenches close to the line of the Maiden way Roman road.
