My imaginary hotel room at the ‘Tove Jansson’ Writer’s Retreat Hotel. Itinerary: Early morning swims complete with floral headdress, healthy breakfast and then a day of productive writing (or other creative pursuit), meander around the headland after very early supper…sleeping with the curtains & window open…and repeat.

It was a real pleasure to lend “Young Girl Reading” for the recent shoot to launch her latest stunning wallpaper collection Botanica. Love the Black Emerald colour way - but also all the others too - tulipmania here we come.

This painting started as an appreciation of my favourite window in my house. And yes, I have a favourite window, fork, chair, the list goes on….all of which I keep to myself for fear someone else will like them and become a rival in their affections.

And also for the dahlias and garden flowers that grow in spite of the benign neglect they receive.

2nd image is the actual window - complete with burglar alarm panel and roll of fabric (favourite) which I’ve had for 25 years and still can’t find a project worthy of its striped majesty. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

Painting a painting that was painted after the subject didn’t exist anymore is a funny old do. The painter Derek Hill painted a picture of Bowen’s Court for Elizabeth Bowen after she’d had to sell and it had been torn down. In many ways it’s an unremarkable but lovely painting if you don’t know the story behind it. When you do, it takes it to another level. Trying to paint it in to my own painting in a way that doesn’t feel very clunky is proving difficult today. It’s fighting back! I’ll look forward to sharing the whole picture at some point - when maybe it and me are on better terms with each other!

Music choice of Gavin Bryars’ Jesus’ Blood Never Failed me - another great story which makes the singing a gazillion times more compelling once you know.

I always found that I end up liking to work in nooks and crannies. I had a favourite desk at school and uni, and now I like working in a room which isn’t where my desk is. Finding places that actually become productive is a life long quest. “Plans start at the desk at the top of the stairs” will be showing at P.O.V. point of view from Nov 14th - Jan 12th.
