Pembrokeshire does seem to be a magnet for many artists and most refer to the quality of light here as being a major factor in this. There does seem to be more light bouncing around off the sea and the sky. The beautiful sunsets are renowned.

I was aware of some wonderful art emanating from Pembrokeshire and as children we were admirers of the landscape paintings that Mum and Dad acquired over the years in our home in Cardiff, many of these being by Donald McIntyre who stayed at Llanunwas while working on field trips.

But there was one little print that caught my eye and, learning about art, this work struck me as something special. It was a scene from Morfa Common looking West towards Ramsey. It was not treated in any usual way, the colours were not those we would normally see here but it worked, it totally captured the wild magic of the Pembrokeshire coast and its mood.

Over the years I have seen more works by Peter Daniels and become a total fan. Peter clearly understood the importance of tone. I think he is one of the best at capturing light especially that rich evening or morning light. And once you get these values right you can play with the colours. Peter’s colour use is fabulous, and his experimenting with paint and surface, painting tools (anything to hand apparently) and print technologies provides works that are fascinating.

After a successful career in advertising and printing, Peter relocated to Pembrokeshire in the 1980s with his family and they settled in Nine Wells where he opened the Pink House Gallery.

I was very sad not to meet him personally but it is a great pleasure for me to know his family now and help them with print reproductions of his work. His daughter Rhiannon who lives in Solva has done an amazing job collating digital images of his works which we are now able to work from.

I find it particularly interesting to see works of landscapes and features close to our home at Llanunwas which Peter studied so intensely too. I got the impression he looked so hard! In his words:

‘There’s always something I’m trying to see that I can’t capture – it’s a constant journey, like chasing the Holy Grail – like Blake’s universe in a grain of sand

and from a write-up in the Western Telegraph:

‘The intensity of Peters work lets the landscape speak for itself. He does not look for what is pretty…but produces shapes, forms and colours of immense power…Constant in every picture is the sense of magic and timelessness of land that has remained the same for thousands of years’

Since working for the Forte restaurant chain Peter clearly enjoyed working on very large works and became internationally known for the power of his shapes, forms and colours. This culminated in a commission in 1994 to cover 1600 square feet of wall space in Wyastone Concert Hall for Nimbus Records, a sound recording studio in Monmouthshire. Apparently Peter was greatly inspired to create the visuals to help the audience listen.

He was not able to complete the massive paintings as intended, Peter was diagnosed with inoperable spinal cancer which prevented him from painting as he wished. In his enterprising way Peter, unthwarted, turned to the technology of printing to enlarge the paintings that he could still manage. His devoted wife Elizabeth and a printer friend of theirs, together with the Trustees of Nimbus Records completed the full commission for Peter whom we lost in 1998. The magnificent paintings were unveiled during a celebratory concert with the English Symphony Orchestra in May 2003. This amazing story is told in a moving interview with Elizabeth:

We have a new logo! We felt it was time for a new look and to represent the move towards the print on demand collaboration with our artists and online developments. So we have taken our inspiration from our place here at Llanunwas and tried to capture the magical feeling of the wood. It is amaazing when you look how the trees change their colours and tones through the day and through changing weather. And we have incorporated the amazing old Monterey Cedar that has survived for so long albeit slightly reduced canopy now and is so much part of the character of Llanunwas. And of course the rooks and the lagest rookery in North Pembrokeshire. Rooks are on the amber list as they have declined across the UK with changes in land use but you wouldn't believe it watching our birds fervently building their nests at this time of the year. They always seem to work so hard! Anyway we hope you like the new design complete with some spring flowers. Thanks Nicola Brown for your help developing it and ForrestPrint for the flag. We are open over the Easter weekend and you will see the flag up. Hope you get a chance to pop in and say Hi.. Happy Easter

On this mothers day in Wales Ella Starling opens her exhibition ‘Raising Her Voice: A Collective Portrait of Motherhood’ at Oriel y Parc in St Davids and will run for two weeks 15 – 30 March, and it will be on show again at Span Arts in Narberth for a week from 15 – 22 April.

We know Ella from her intricate botanical paintings and from her generous life drawing teaching in St Davids. But Ella’s talent and career as a painter is now being discovered through her important and moving representations of what goes unsaid for many mothers in the time during creating new lives and afterwards when nurturing these new lives. These times can be dangerous, traumatic and desolate for many mothers and Ella’s powerful oil paintings and charcoal drawings relay these journeys to the viewer and the strength it takes to navigate them. Ella’s work illuminates the need for more community support to mothers to help them find the strength that they need in what is the most important job of all, forming new lives.

Ella is making limited edition runs of 100 prints of this painting at two sizes with us:

This period of work and exhibition by Ella has been supported by the Arts Council Wales and National Lottery.

Raising Her Voice: A Collective Portrait of Motherhood
‘Through portraiture, I seek to explore what words often fall short of expressing’
The intention of this work was to create honest, personal representations of motherhood
that challenge the often oversimplified versions and limiting narratives we see in visual
culture.
At the heart of the project are the in-depth interviews I had with three mothers from across
Pembrokeshire, alongside Mothers’ Circles and my own lived experience.
These interviews revealed how frequently women move through this crucial time without
space to process what they’re experiencing because the priority is always the child. But the
scars and the emotions are still there, unprocessed, unreleased. These portraits are a way of
making visible what is often pushed down or left unspoken.
If maternal wellbeing support is not embedded within our communities, we risk continuing
to see mothers struggle in silence and ever more frightening statistics about maternal
mental health. This project advocates for space, honesty and collective care

On this St David’s Day 1 March we would like to remember a very special friend and very talented artist who entrusted her work with us, Sara Crisp

Sara Crisp is renowned for her beautiful icon paintings in St David’s Cathedral which have been the subject of a book, and celebrated by so many visitors to the cathedral. These can be considered high art and may be enjoyed by many generations to come. Sara created these works of art using a medieval style and technique known as egg tempera on gesso panels with gold leaf water gilding. She loved historical and also wildlife subjects.

The new Dean at St Davids Cathedral the very Revd Dr Sarah Rowland Jones, on meeting King Charles, introduced herself in her role at the cathedral and the Prince as he was then replied “Ah yes those wonderful icons”. The thing he remembered most from his earlier visit to St David’s Cathedral were Sara’s beautiful ornamental paintings that will adorn this sacred place for perhaps another thousand years of its future history.

We miss her a lot. Her partner, Jam Crisp a highly talented musician and teacher, is directing proceeds from sales of Sara’s work to preserving her work into the future.

Ian Bullock retrospective exhibition at Oriel y Parc (St Davids room) through the rest of Feb.

Enjoy the wonderful world of Ian Bullock, island conservationist, mentor and friend to many, gifted artist and travelling naturalist:

Many of his exquisite drawings, sketches and paintings made the world over, have been gathered by his wife Gill and their daughter Heulwen in a retrospective exhibition at the Oriel y Parc information centre in St Davids to give you a window to gaze at what can be described as a great body of artwork from many thousands of hours of quiet observation of nature.

Ian, a highly accomplished conservationist, loved nothing more than observing and recording wildlife behaviour in hundreds of sketchbooks. His great knowledge of natural history was sought after and Ian guided many intrepid ship journeys to some extraordinary and extreme habitats around the world. Share his experiences on these journeys through his exquisitely crafted charts of ship journeys with colourful compositions of the animals that he and guests observed.

Gill and Heulwen are directing a proportion of any proceeds to Ian's favourite island wildlife charities notably in Seychelles.

We wrote a fuller account of Ian’s work here

and have added many more of his artworks to his webpage to offer a virtual way of accompanying his journeys..

Graham Brace came along to our opening of the Natural Gallery at Rookwood and I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with him again.

I am very glad to report that we are able to advertise and print a few select geological compositions by this renowned Pembrokeshire artist.

Graham was born in Milford Haven, he qualified in graphic design at Cardiff College of Art and after a stint in advertising in the big smoke he started up a graphic design and advertising consultancy in Haverfordwest which he ran successfully for 20 years.

At the same time, Graham linked up with a growing community of distinguished artists who were making their home in Pembrokeshire drawn to the inspiring landscapes and 'wonderful light': John Knapp-Fisher, John Rogers, Peter Daniels, Alun Davies to name a few. There are many more artists living and working in Pembrokeshire now and we are fortunate to show some of their work through this collaborative site. I am very glad to be able to welcome Graham and his art.

From 1999, Graham was able to dedicate himself to full time art and has been highly productive, notably providing the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority with extensive illustrations for their information publications and boards. He lives in Llangwm and his themes are nature-based with a clear inspiration drawn from the local geological features and observations of pebble and storm beaches.

His compositions celebrate the wonderful colours and forms that he sees here. They contain abstraction but are created in a very realistic way using coloured pencils. This is quite astonishing at first glance, some say they look like photographs, I think they look like paintings.

Graham is a founder member of the UK Coloured Pencil Society. He is widely renowned for his command of this medium and his work has been published in several art magazines including ‘Artist and Illustrator’, ‘Pratique Des Arts’ (France) and ‘Color Magazine’ (USA). But he adds to this medium with soft pastels, gouache, markers and pens. So his works are best described as mixed-media drawings.

We have ten of Graham's artworks available for purchase on his page as high quality limited edition (100) prints. (The artworks were scanned and images kindly supplied by Marcus Bunce of New Leaf Glicee.)

If you are still looking for something nice to give someone this Christmas we can highly recommend one of Graham's prints and these can be supplied within the UK ahead of Christmas as long as orders are received by 14 December (this Sunday). We are closing for the holiday from then until early in the New Year. Happy holidays all!

We have two sizes available of this wonderful new print by Philippa Mitchell reproduced from her painting 'Puffinry', which was inspired by her recent close observations at colonies of these spectacular birds on the Isle of May and on Skomer Island. A smaller and a medium-sized print, both on the highest quality Hahnemuhle Photorag 188gsm paper which does full justice to the rich colours and deep tones in the artwork. A beautiful keepsake.

We welcome any orders for these through the web link https://rookwoodstudios.com/artist/philippamitchell/

We will be closing the gallery and printing service from 15th December this year, and any orders needed in time for Christmas must be made by 10 December to allow enough time for print production and postage that week.
