On this day in 1866 Beatrix Potter was born (d. 1943)
Best known for the creation of Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggywinkle, Jemima Puddleduck and Jeremy Fisher, her books were designed for little hands. They used simple language, engaging stories and beautiful illustrations. But more than merely an author and illustrator, she was a woman far ahead of her time. She was a farmer, an adept illustrator, a natural scientist and a conservationist.
On her death she bequeathed almost 4000 acres, including her home of Hill Top Farm, to the National Trust. In doing so she helped preserve Lake District farms from unsuitable development in the early part of the 20th century and played a major role in the conservation of the Herdwick sheep, now a icon synonymous with the Lake District.

*these are not Herdwick sheep. However, they are wearing hats and we believe Mrs Potter would have approved.

Had we never loved sae kindly
Had we never loved sae blindly,
Never met and never parted,
We wad ne'er be broken hearted.

It was on this day in 1796 that Robert Burns, our National Bard, died. Transcending national, cultural and language barriers, his works are known across the world and have influenced popular culture, centuries after his death.

The best thing since...🍞

A huge leap forward for the bakery industry, sliced bread was first sold in 1828 when Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented a machine for the Chillicothe Baking Company. Such was the success of Rohwedder's invention that it gave us not only sliced bread but the idiom too.

You can find object 84.153/1 by searching in our online collection or see it close-up in our Victorian Kitchen display.

Low Parks Museum

Low Parks Museum in Hamilton is a 4-star Visit Scotland attraction, situated in the Low Parks of the Duke of Hamilton's former estate. Its two historic buildings are of national importance - Portland, built in 1696 as the private home of David Crawford, secretary and lawyer to the 3rd Duke and Duchess of Hamilton, and Hamilton Palace Riding School, built in 1837 by Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton. The museum traces South Lanarkshire’s history, with displays relating to Hamilton Palace and the Royal Burghs; early settlement; working life and agriculture; design, industry and technology; and also the story of the local regiment, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). A programme of temporary exhibitions and displays also features. There is a small cafe serving a range of sandwiches, soups and tasty snacks.

Entry to the Low Parks Museum is free and parking is also free.

History Project: It is 125 years since Bothwell Road Park was gifted to the people of Hamilton and the Surrounding area. We want to recognize the importance the park has had to the local community who have used it over this time. This is where we need your help. Do you have story’s about the time you spent in the park? Do you have photographs? Did you play in the park as a kid? Did you paddle with the big feet? Did you get your 1st kiss at the statue? Did you perform on the band stand? All stories are welcome. And any photos can be scanned The stories and pictures will be used in a display for the local community later in the year If you can help get in touch https://www.facebook.com/bothwellroad/
