If you’re looking for a way to slow down and reconnect with the natural world, our gentle Illustrating Nature course could be just the thing. You’ll take inspiration from the quiet beauty of the seasons, blending traditional and contemporary illustration techniques. ✨ Courageous Photography Workshop ✨
Refugee Week 2026

📅 Friday 12 June 2026
🕑 14:00 – 17:00
📍 Everybody Arts, Shaw Lane, Halifax HX3 9ET

Join portrait artist Nic Chapman for a free creative photography session as part of Refugee Week 2026.

This workshop explores this year’s theme, Courage, through personal objects that hold meaning, memory, identity and strength. Participants are invited to bring an item that makes them feel courageous, whether that’s something connected to home, family, resilience, or personal confidence.

It might be an object you wear, carry, or keep close, a photograph, a piece of jewellery, clothing, or something else. Together, we’ll explore how everyday objects can hold powerful stories.

Through guided photography, professional portraiture and conversation, we will reflect on how courage can be found in the things we carry with us and hold dear.

Photography created during the session will be exhibited at Everybody Arts on Thursday 18 June (13:00–16:00) as part of the Refugee Week programme.

This session is open to all. No experience needed. Cameras or phones welcome, with support available throughout.

Alongside this workshop, were offering free studio access sessions and free memberships for refugees and people seeking asylum, supporting ongoing creative participation and community connection.

Alongside our much-loved favourites, you’ll find a brand-new Mixed Media Course. In these fun and playful sessions, you’ll experiment with different materials and celebrate the joy of discovery over the pressure of perfection.

We’re excited to welcome Hondartza Fraga to our gallery for a three-week artist residency.

During her time with us, Hodartza will develop Holding the Middle, a project that reimagines the gallery as a working, reflective space. Bringing together drawing, sculpture, working materials and objects in an evolving display, the gallery will become a site for testing, reconfiguring and placing works in dialogue with each other.

Public engagement will form an integral part of the residency and the space will be open for visitors Wednesday – Friday, 1 – 4pm, until 12 June. The gallery will also be open:

- Saturday 30 May, 1 – 4pm
- Wednesday 10 June, 6 – 8pm (Closing event)
- Saturday 13 June, 1 – 4pm

Please do drop in to see Hodartza’s evolving work and get an insight into the artist’s process: https://www.everybodyarts.org.uk/exhibitionsandevents/residency-hondartza-fraga

**Session postponed - new date TBA**

Join us this week for our next Ceramics workshop, Throwing off the hump.

📅 Wednesday 27 May
🕕 6 - 8:30pm

So… what is throwing off the hump? It’s not shedding a bad mood (although our workshops definitely help with that). And it’s not making your pots nice and smooth - though you’ll do plenty of that too.

Throwing off the hump is a ceramics skill that will speed up your making and improve your overall technique. You’ll learn how to centre a large mass of clay on the wheel and consecutively throw multiple small pieces from the top.

This session is perfect for potters ready to build on their foundational wheel skills. To get the most out of this workshop you need to be able to throw a straight cylinder of around 12cm and have a basic understanding of throwing bowls.

And as a naturally cool working space, our studio is also the perfect escape from the heat ☀️❄️
