This week is Refugee Week and to mark the occasion we’re sharing some Simple Acts - everyday actions we can all do to stand with refugees and make new connections in our communities.

We’re particularly excited as this year’s Simple Acts have been illustrated by our Principal Patron, Sir Quentin Blake KBE. Quentin became our Patron in 2017, supporting our commitment to delivering high-quality arts provision for all. We're very lucky – we know! 🧡

We’re incredibly proud that Quentin is lending his extraordinary talent to such an important campaign. Bloom Network: Exploring Home Through Film - 10am - 12.30pm
Join artist Penny Moe for a special Bloom Network session for women and gender diverse people where we'll explore ideas of home, belonging and connection through participatory filmmaking.

Free Studio Membership Induction - 1 - 2pm
Start your creative journey with us! Get welcomed into our creative spaces, meet the team and learn more about our Art Studio Membership.

Refugee Week Exhibition - 2 – 5pm
Explore photographic work created with members of St Augustine's Centre and celebrate the creativity, stories and experiences within our community.

Brave Drawing Workshop - 3 – 4pm
Take part in a relaxed collaborative drawing session exploring this year's Refugee Week theme: Courage. No experience needed.

Last month, we were excited to launch the Bloom Network, a new creative health network designed to connect, support and inspire women and gender-diverse people in Calderdale 🌸

At our first session, we welcomed creatives, wellbeing practitioners and community members from Calderdale and beyond to explore creative health and help shape what the Network will become.

The next Bloom Network will take place on Wednesday 18 June, 10am – 12.30pm, as part of Refugee Week, and we’d love you to join us.

The session will be facilitated by Calderdale-based artist Penny Moe, a Burmese interdisciplinary artist whose work explores ideas of home, displacement, belonging and connection. Join in the fun this weekend! 🤩

We have a jam-packed programme this Saturday 13th June at Everybody Arts. You could learn to whittle a barn owl with professional wood carver , discover a new way to explore and experiment with nature as you learn simple weaving techniques with the popular , or join our Saturday Mud Club and gain experience of working with clay in a fun and relaxed environment with brand-new tutor Jessica Burnand-Smith.

Don’t forget to sign up to this term’s courses before they start next week. There’s lots to get stuck into – from drawing, painting, ceramics and more.

If you’re looking for a way to slow down and reconnect with the natural world, our gentle Illustrating Nature course could be just the thing. You’ll take inspiration from the quiet beauty of the seasons, blending traditional and contemporary illustration techniques. We also have some places left on our popular Wheel Throwing sessions – snap them up before they’re gone!

As well as our courses, we also have a great selection of workshops, including some lovely sessions for Refugee Week. A number of these sessions are free or PAYF so that they can be accessed by as many people as possible 💜 We also offer concessions on our paid-for courses and workshops, so please do take a look If cost is a barrier for you.

Courage can be found in everyday acts. In sharing stories, building connections, trying something new, supporting others, and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome.

What does courage look like?

As part of Refugee Week 2026, join us for a free collaborative drawing workshop guided by artist Sarah O'Boyle exploring this year's theme: Courage.

Through playful drawing activities, you'll create artwork together, working in pairs and small groups to explore ideas of connection, belonging, identity and mutual support.

No drawing experience needed. Just bring yourself.
